[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686107] Re: Latest kernel update gets stuck

2017-11-24 Thread Veron Rado
@ Giorgio Salluzzo Thanks for the workaround. It got me out of a real
mess.

I am on Ubuntu 17.10 but the same issue happened to me
For any one else in a panic, stuck in the same situation, kernel half
installed, this is what saved me:

* Kill Synaptic with "System Monitor"

* A dpkg process was left hung and was blocking further updates
- So in "System Monitor" search for and kill the dpkg process that's
running and locking things.
- Searching the string "/var/lib/dpkg" found it for me.
- It had this process "linux-headers-4.3.0-17-generic.postinst"

* Here's the trick that made it work (@ Giorgio Salluzzo's workaround)
Go to a virtual console CTRL+ALT+F6
Login as your user name and run this command from there
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

* That alone is probably the fix but I also ran these from the same virtual
terminal
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo apt-get clean
$ sudo apt-get update

* CTRL+ALT+F2 to get back to the desktop.

* Then "Software Updater" popped up a message saying run a "Partial Upgrade".
Which I did. But it turned out I didn't need that so it stopped itself
automatically!

* Then I opened Synaptic and checked for updates. None.

* Back-up any user data and reboot. For me all went well.
  The new kernel was installed.

NOTES: I tried "sudo dpkg --configure -a" in a normal Terminal but it failed.
It just hung again like Synaptic did.
Giorgio Salluzzo's virtual console workaround was the trick.

But the virtual consoles can be weird.
CTRL+ALT+F1 locks my screen (and then the monitor switches off!) When you wake
the screen you can't log back in!!! You have to use CTRL+ALT+F2 to get back to
the desktop.

CTRL+ALT+F6 seemed to work best for me but when I tried it for the first
time it was just a black screen with a cursor. When I came back later it
had a promt for me to login with.

Virtual consoles tips:

I can't finish the update process now. I am also unable to install any

More info is provided here on this AskUbuntu question:

I hope I reported this on the right location.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1725788] Re: Fail to resume after suspend on Ubuntu 17.10 with Radeon RX 480

2017-11-24 Thread Veron Rado
Got the latest Ubuntu kernel update 4.13.0.17.18 (it hung during kernel
installation and had real pain figuring out how to get out of that
mess[1])

Trying to figure out how Ubuntu's kernel numbering matches regular Linux kernel
numbering it would appears (from the README[2]) that Ubuntu 4.13.0.17.18 brings
us up to Linux 4.13.8 ?
So its not fixed yet.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1725788] Re: Fail to resume after suspend on Ubuntu 17.10 with Radeon RX 480

2017-10-24 Thread Veron Rado
I tried kernel 4.14.0-041400rc6.
System still fails to resume on RX 480 with it.

When I was removing the test kernel the last four line were worrying:

The link /vmlinuz is a damaged link
Removing symbolic link vmlinuz
you may need to re-run your boot loader[grub]
The link /initrd.img is a damaged link
Removing symbolic link initrd.img

The system has rebooted fine and I'm back on UBuntu 17.10's default
4.13.0-16-generic kernel but do I need to "re-run my boot loader [grub]"
or is that something I can ignore? (I don't know how to re-run my boot
loader.)

Great, this is fixed with the latest Ubuntu kernel update 4.13.0.19.20
(which is equivalent to 'regular' Linux kernel 4.13.13 I think[1]).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1943616] Re: CD-ROM tray opens on wake from suspend on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal

2021-09-14 Thread Veron Rado
I tried to set the package for this bug to 'linux' but launchpad won't let me.
It returns the error "There is 1 error in the data you entered. Please fix it
and try again. A fix for this bug has already been requested for linux in
Ubuntu"

This says kernel bugs should be listed under 'linux'

As a workaround, if you leave a disc in the drive it seems to stop the
unwanted eject.

I installed the HWE kernel using :

   $ sudo apt-get install linux-generic-hwe-20.04

What is the recommended way to remove it and go back to the regular
kernel again?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1916950] Re: [amdgpu] Screen fails to wake up after sleep

2021-03-03 Thread Veron Rado
The tty2 workaround didn't work for me.
I have to do a couple of sleep/wake cycles and eventually the screen stays on.

Can also confirm rolling back to 5.4.0-65-generic fixes the issue.

@Daniel van Vugt That's a good idea. Thank you. I didn't know what the HWE

Bug description:
  [Impact]

A regression was introduced via upstream -stable patches which causes
the CD / DVD rom drive to open when the system boots, or wakes from
  suspend.

This has had some side effects on some systems where you cannot insert
media at all, since the drive will eject as soon as the tray is
  closed.

  The problematic patch is:

  commit 7dd753ca59d6c8cc09aa1ed24f7657524803c7f3
  Author: ManYi Li
  Date: Fri Jun 11 17:44:02 2021 +0800
Subject: scsi: sr: Return appropriate error code when disk is ejected
  Link:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/7dd753ca59d6c8cc09aa1ed24f7657524803c7f3

  This was backported to:

  Bionic 4.15.0-155-generic
  Focal 5.4.0-82-generic
  Hirsute 5.11.0-32-generic
  Impish 5.13.0-1-generic

  [Fix]

The issue was fixed in the below commit:

  commit 5c04243a56a7977185b00400e59ca7e108004faf
  Author: Li Manyi
  Date: Mon Jul 26 19:49:13 2021 +0800
Subject: scsi: sr: Return correct event when media event code is 3
  Link:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/5c04243a56a7977185b00400e59ca7e108004faf

This patch is already applied to Ubuntu kernels through upstream
-stable, and will land in the following releases, currently in
  -proposed:

  Bionic 4.15.0-159-generic
  Focal 5.4.0-87-generic
  Hirsute 5.11.0-37-generic
  Impish 5.13.0-16-generic

  [Testcase]

If your machine is affected, the CD / DVD rom drive will eject and /
or open during boot or waking from suspend.

This can be seen on some hypervisors, particularly VMware.
