Isn't it against the rules? Either way, it's your call :-) and little also
provides feedback on submitted solutions.

Eudyptula Challenge.

2021-08-20 Thread David K

Hello,

It is my plan to share some, if not all, of my material from Eudyptula
challenge here mostly with the intent of getting critique.

This should not be against any Eudyptula challenge rules as a lot of
people have already shared their solutions to the challenge on Github
and probably other places. Since email is the accepted way of
contributing to Linux kernel development and a lot of other open source
projects, this is my preferred way of sharing my solutions and possibly
getting critique.

It is my hope that this is not against any list rules. This looks like
the case to me and would it happen that this is not the case, any heads
up would be much appreciated.

Regards,

David.

Thanks all.

Yeah, I understand a judgement on a submission could take a while, but I
wasn't getting an auto-response either.

Looks like it was a mail routing issue on my side and I also got the
subject format wrong.

Little also announced some time back that the challenge would be
closed for new entrants after 20k entrants (at that point there were
19k), so it might be closed already?

But yeah, be patient, sometimes little is busy - but he'll get back to

I was booted too. And I didn't accept that judgement indeed. The rules
in the site are:

"What are the rules?

There aren't any, with the exception that you really should be doing
your own work. This challenge is for you, not anyone else, so don't
ask about how to solve them on mailing lists or IRC. Posting answers
to the questions online is also frowned apon, as it really doesn't
help anyone out.

Also, we can tell if you are cheating, we have our ways..."

In this thread only was asked about the delay. And in my own case,
answered only that mine have some delay too.

There's no any kind of cheating here. Please eudyptula crew, consider
it to reactivate the accounts and if it's the case, expand the rules
to avoid any kind of discussion about the challenges elsewhere than in
little penguin email.

We all appreciate the well done work in the eudyptula challenges and
thank you for that great opportunity of learn from you.

that I'm "number 176 in line, and the response that is next is from "12 Jan

You need to put your ID in the subject, and the email must be the one
that you registered.

It's ok to attach this way, but the email must be the one that you started.

Maybe ask little himself? Really only he knows about this. And this ML
is for kernel questions and not for eudyptula discussion. Btw, don't ask
for help on MLs or you may get removed from the challenge.

The Eudyptula Challenge - Sending task

2015-03-31 Thread Leonardo Ariel Carreras Rodríguez
Hello everyone,
I am trying to send Task 1. I already verified that my files do what
they are supposed to.
I am using mutt to send emails, so I have some questions.
1. Because gmail gives an advice about not using less secure apps, I
am using another email address. Does Little care about the email or
the ID is enough?
2. I attached as text using mutt the files that were required, but I
am not sure if that is ok. An email was sent to Little from that 'new'
account (not the one from which I started the challenge).
3. How long does it take to know if the task was completed, or at
least that is waiting for correction?
Regards,
Leonardo Carreras

Doesn't matter; those are the rules of the Challenge, for better or
worse. It seems as though any mention of Challenge specifics is enough
to get participants removed, period.

It's much better to find the "root" of the problem that you are trying
to solve -- that is, the parts of the problem that, in this case, have
nothing directly to do with the Eudyptula Challenge itself -- and ask
about that, rather than ask about the logistical specifics of the
Challenge like you did.

By the way, don't top-post. See: http://kernelnewbies.org/mailinglistguidelines

Best of luck.

Hi all,

I am on task5, little says to read ch 14 (device model) of LDD3 but ch
13 (USB driver) seems to be the one i should read. I have already been
following this book and reached ch5, would it be ok to jump to ch
13/14 directly.?

Moreover reading /Documentation/usb/hotplug.txt seems to help me
solving the challenge. So should i read ch 13/14 of continue reading
in order.?

Re: Eudyptula challenge task 6 reply

2015-03-18 Thread Drew Fustini
for comparison sake, i just got task 11 now after submitting task 10
to little 12 days ago. The auto responder said there were 12 people
in line ahead of me at the time for that task. The longest I've
waited for a response was almost 4 weeks for task 08.

a good list of ideas to work on while waiting for little's response:

"Three Ways for Beginners to Contribute to the Linux Kernel "
http://www.linux.com/news/software/linux-kernel/804403-three-ways-for-beginners-to-contribute-to-the-linux-kernel

i've also started compiling and running linux-next everyday. twice
over the past few weeks it broke on my system (amd64 laptop). it was
very interesting to try to track down what the issue was. i learned
how to use "git bisect" in the process. in both cases, a patch ended
up in linux-next to resolve the issue before i could identify a fix,
but it was a very educational process.

cheers,
drew

I am stuck at task 20 for lng time (mainly because I am not
getting time to read the code properly).
anyways, even if you find such a list, i will advise you not to do
tasks in advance. many of the tasks are related to its previous tasks,
so if your previous task was wrong or not upto the standard then the
task which you are trying to do in advance will also be not right.

patience is the key to everything. i assume since you are doing this
challenge so that means you want to work with the kernel, and without
patience that will be tough. so consider this waiting for review of
your task as also another undocumented task.

Re: Eudyptula challenge task 6 reply

2015-02-26 Thread Drew Fustini
I think it means there are a bunch of submissions for those tasks to
be reviewed.

Task 8 took quite awhile for little to review my submission.

Task 9 i just submitted last week and got a very quick response, #2 in
line for the task. Then my fix for mistake in original submission was
#1 in line for the task 9. So I think it really just depends if the
task you are on has a backlog or not.

The nice thing is that little created the autoresponder with you place
in the review queue for that task. you should be OK as long as you
get that autoresponder email, but I know it is tough to wait when
anxious to work on the next task. This has been keeping me busy in
between: http://free-electrons.com/training/kernel/

thanks little!

Hi. Earlier today I've sent an email and just got the reply:

"
It's in the queue. Right now queues 03, 06, 08, 18, and 20 are "stuck"
:(
"

So, all is fine, let's wait :)

2015-02-26 Thread Jonathan Jin
Definitely don't resend your submission; you'd just get pushed to the
back of the queue.

However, it probably wouldn't hurt to send little an email asking what's
up.

For the record, I'm also waiting on a submission to that exact same task
(submitted in early January), so I'm curious as well.

Fwd: Eudyptula challenge submissions (patch versus proof)

2015-02-02 Thread Tolga Ceylan
I think due to my e-mail below, I was removed from the challenge.

Or maybe it was due to the way I submitted the task; separate e-mail
for proof and another kernel patch e-mail...

I'm not sure if this is due to some script parsing some keywords in
kernelnewbies list, but let this be a warning for the rest of you
who are taking this challenge...

I find this unnecessarily harsh especially when the system
takes a very long time to process e-mails and when there's
no outlet for process related questions such as mine below.

All I wanted to find out was if proof should be in the patch
itself or if it's OK to send separate e-mails.

It really should be OK to ask for help for harmless submission related
questions such as how to use thunderbird or git send-email.

Cheers,
Tolga

Quick question about how to submit patches and proofs. Are separate
emails OK with this? For example;

1) a "formal" kernel patch submitted via git send-email
2) proof e-mail submitted via replying to the original task email

Or should the proof be in the git commit description itself?

What I meant is that the Eudyptula Challenge doesn't have any hard-fast
rules about exactly what constitutes adequate "evidence"; the admin
leaves it up to you to decide what kind of information to provide that
would be sufficient.

One way to think of it: if you were the admin, and you were critiquing
a submission for the Task that you yourself are submitting for, what
would be enough to convince *you* that the implementation was correct?

Be very critical of yourself; it is, to my understanding, hard to
overestimate just how critical kernel devs are.

Do keep in mind, though, that I myself am also a newbie and that I am
also working through the Challenge, so do listen to everything I say
with the requisite grains of salt; hopefully more experienced members of
the mailing list can chime in as well. But I personally believe that
adopting this sort of self-critical mindset towards your work will pay
huge dividends later on.

Re-adding this discussion back to the mailing list. When you respond to
someone on the mailing list, be sure to also CC the list itself, so as
to include everybody in the conversation and get as many voices involved
as possible.

That said, in terms of proof, Little leaves it, to my understanding,
very much up to your personal judgment. Maybe you could consider

Taken from December 2014 challenge status report:

But note, for everyone, responses for the next month are going to be
very limited. So relax, go read a good book, take a bike ride, enjoy
the lovely weather outside, don't worry about kernel programming
challenges, they aren't going anywhere, and as this isn't costing you
anything, there's nothing you can do about it.

Also don't resubmit your solution because that will put you at the end
of the queue.

I am also in the Eudyptula challenge at Task 04. Though haven't followed
it due to being tied up with other activities. But, if I recall
correctly based on the two status reports he send somewhere in December,
I guess that is normal.

Patiently waiting is all you can do. I think you should not resubmit. If
I recall correctly he mentioned resubmitting puts you back at the last
of the queue as it will be a new response with your assigned ID.

I strongly encourage using Mutt with Gmail. At the beginning I was
using Thunderbird with Gmail and I don't know why but somehow it
stopped to work and I was probably making the Little Penguin very

You should search archives of this mailing list on this topic for a python
script which can send using gmail. (Though now a days, you need to disable
an extra security feature whenever you use this python script)

Yup, I submitted my current task 4 weeks ago, sent a note last week,
and got reply the next day (Nov 1) with same sentiment: relax -
everything is ok, it's a slow process, and it's not a race.

I've been on challenge 5 for about a month and a half. I sent him a follow
up email a few weeks ago and he replied "Relax, things are slow, there's no
rush..."

His response times before that were usually less than 2 days.

It happens from time to time because a lot of people are doing the
challenge. If after some time (1 - 2 weeks +) you get no reply you can
always send little a message and ask about the queue or if your
submission was lost. Just don't send him messages very short after
sending your submissions because that will piss him off. He's already
doing a tremendous favor for all of us.

Hopefully this will be helpful,
