Software fundations are born exactly for this reason. We may ask to FSF
(or FSFE) and I am sure they will be more than happy to help us. The
alternative is to create one by ourselves but, due to our small footprint
I hardly think it is something we can manage...

Here you can find a list:

http://flossfoundations.org/foundation-directory

Another due action IMHO is to register the KiCad TM, as Linus was once
forced to do with Linux.

Sure, such work nobody really needs or want.
But the more KiCad is growing the more there is a need to keep all the
various corners together in e efficient way. And this will taking
resources mostly at a time you don't want to spend energy on it. So it's

rather than try to shoe horn into an existing slot.

My main concern about the donation amount is that at some point kicad will
be big enough to need a some what more formal
legal presence. Form a non-profit with a board of directors so you can do
things like hold trademarks and sue people. We may
have reached that point already. It is the last thing most developers want

You need to present KiCad's new features 3 times and explain each

You also need to teach 3 groups of people at different times how to use
KiCad.

I think you'll find a lot more "Note to self" improvements tat you

What happens when footprint library file is modified outside the
fp-lib-table? At one point you could change the footprint library file
without performing the file write through the fp-lib-table and the next
time you accessed the library, it would recognize the file was modified
and reload the cache. Please make sure this behavior is not broken.

It actually makes sense for Digikey to encourage development of KiCad since
a lot more people would be encouraged to build gadgets and thus need
components which they'd likely buy from Digikey in the US.

Enable the user to build things, and they'll come buy your inventory of
parts.

[Kicad-developers] Another performance patch....

2018-02-05 Thread Jeff Young
This one for Place Footprint (specifically the List All dialog found therein).

On my machine it knocks the first-use time from 4s to 3s and the subsequent-use
time from 2.5s to 1s.

Cheers,
Jeff.

Re: [Kicad-developers] [PATCH] Add a menu item to save a project under a new name.

2018-02-05 Thread Russell Oliver
Yeah, I realized this after a sent the patch in, though I think it also
calls into question the logic behind the archive project function. Though I
am surprised about the sub directory files problem.

I do think it's an important feature to have though, so any help from
anyone would be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Russell

Hi Russel,

I tested your patch, but it does not work very well:
- subdirectories are not duplicated. Instead of, the files inside subdirs
are copied to the new root
dir.
- lib tables are not copied.

There is also a problem with libraries inside the project (like a rescue
lib)
They are renamed, but lib tables should be modified, according to the
renaming.

This is a tricky problem.

Yeah, that to adds to the confusion. I think maybe coherency should be
one of the main goal for v6.

To make a long hassle short, turns out the shortcut "P" is used to place
symbols in Altium, but to place Power symbols in kicad.
This is not an issue, however, there is no indication at all that the symbol
chooser is actually filtered or limited when using the shortcut key.

I think there could be benefits of adding some kind of visualization to the
symbol chooser that the list is limited to only power symbols, maybe just
changing the window title to something like "Choose Power Symbol" or the
more general term of adding the filter to the window name. Let me know what
you think

Also when you place a power symbol, the dialog shows normal symbols in
the history list, and it also permits to insert these symbols even if
they are not power symbols... that to me seems incoherent...

Hi Jon,

I tested the patch on W7 -32 bits.

Unfortunately, it does not work as expected:

I loaded 2 Gerber files and switch from Cairo to OpenGL (reorder X2 command
gives similar results):
current version (without patch): calculation time 12 to 15 seconds
with patch: calculation time about 2 minutes.
