Re: [Kicad-developers] {PATCH] Icon tweaks

2017-05-03 Thread Константин Барановский
Hi Fabrizio,
you can find all the icons in my branch:
https://code.launchpad.net/~baranovskiykonstantin/kicad/+git/kicad/+ref/new_icons_rebased

This branch was reworked and now it looks like patch sets over master
branch. I'm periodically apply the rebasing, so be careful if you planing
to use it.

Some icons are hidden in menus which I don't seem to be able to
 screenshot.

The documentation build system really needs to have an automated way to
pull bitmaps for icons directly from the source repository...

It doesn't really need to. The screenshots also need to be updated at the
same time and that is not trivial to automate. I think it is easier to
manually check when you manually update the icons.

There is nothing won by automation here.

2017-02-16 Thread Fabrizio Tappero
Hi Guys,
I totally agree with you John. If you think you want to go ahead and review
Konstantin icons and submit small groups of new and improved icons, I think
that would be a terrific idea.

I just would like you to be a little "sensitive" on the fact that whatever
improvement on kiCad looks is totally welcome but it would be great if it
could come gradually. The KiCad documentation (in all its languages) is not
really ready for a totally new icon look.

I think it would be totally great if we could first go ahead with the
submission of this
https://code.launchpad.net/~john-j-beard/kicad/+git/kicad/+ref/icons

plus the icon in attachment.

this is just my 2c.

Cheers
Fabrizio

Re: [Kicad-developers] {PATCH] Icon tweaks

2017-02-14 Thread John Beard
Hi,

I think Konstantin's icons are a more complete and homegenous set -
I'd rather see those go in first. If there is still any use for my
icons after that, I can rebase on top of that.

He and I have talked about rebasing his branch into a simpler set of
smaller patches (eg. just zoom icons) for easier review, since I think
icons can easily attracts lots of comment, and getting bogged down in
talking about colours of vias when the zoom icons are fine would be
frustrating!

Cheers,

John

Re: [Kicad-developers] {PATCH] Icon tweaks

2017-02-12 Thread John Beard
Hi Fabrizio,

The changes are on the tip of this branch:

https://code.launchpad.net/~john-j-beard/kicad/+git/kicad/+ref/icons

I have deliberately tried not made drastic changes to the icons such
that they would be unrecognisable to users of older documentation,
it's mostly alignment and colour tweaks.

If they get merged, I should update the kicad-doc documentation before
v5 gets cut.

Updating the documentation is easy to replace the icons themselves
(copy/paste from source repo to docs repo), but will also need some
new screenshots too.

Cheers,

John

Hi John,
these improved icons look great! thanks for the effort. I think this work
should be included. Could you please submit a patch for this to Wayne or JP.

A lot of icons could be improved and as Wayne mentioned it is important to
kind of coordinate us so that we do not create great icons that do not get
submitted to the main kiCad stream. John if you think you want contribute
to this, there is a lot of new and great icons from Konstantin that could
be picked and submitted. Mind that we cannot start redesigning tons of new
icons because the documentation will then be heavily out of sync.

thanks a lot

I looks like we have several devs working on icons at the same time. We
really need to do a better job of letting other devs know what your
working on to prevent conflicts and to allow for collaboration.

I would be all for supplying image libraries. We've talked about this
in the past but it's such a low priority that no one ever had time to
look at it.

Not entirely sure which OS you are using, but LightShot [1] is fantastic
at being able take pictures of menus on Windows. (It works on Mac also)

Re: [Kicad-developers] {PATCH] Icon tweaks

2017-02-11 Thread Chris Pavlina
You use way too many icons with identical silhouettes, which makes them
very difficult to tell apart at a glance. And lose the pencils, they
also don't add anything for quick recognition.

Re: [Kicad-developers] {PATCH] Icon tweaks

2017-02-11 Thread John Beard
Hi Piotr,

It's a nice idea, and I certainly think it would be good not to have
to compile in the icons, but instead be able to load from files.
However, as far as I know, there are some technical problems with
that, to do with WX icons only being able to use XPM on all platforms,

If nothing else, it might reduce the horrible recompile that happens
if bitmaps.h gets touched.

Cheers,

John

Did anyone consider adding the ability for “themes”/“resource packs"? So that
one could load and switch packs that contain icons, colors and fonts. A good
default is very important, but an easy way of testing out modifications to
icons and color themes might be a nice thing to have.

Re: [Kicad-developers] {PATCH] Icon tweaks

2017-02-11 Thread Константин Барановский
In my vision, pencil - is the symbol of the edit action.
If you look to left sidebar of the kicad window (on attached image from
previous message), you can see icons without pencil. That icons of the
files (pcb, schematic, libraries, netlist, etc.).
On the instrumental panel of the kicad window placed similar icons with
pencil, that indicate a tool for editing specific file.

I like the use of the book to signify the libraries but why the return to

The icons are way better without the pencils in my opinion and if they
feature in every icon then what differentiating purpose do they serve?

While we are at it, what about making the line graphic icon such that
it matches the style of the arc and circle? That is making it not
dashed, and add anchor point indicators? Just an idea. But beaware
that it is really a dashed line in eeschema...
