[Koha] Switching from Other Library Software to Koha

2013-10-07 Thread Ben Doughney

Hi,

I have just joined this email list to see if anyone has transferred from the
library software AccessIt to Koha. Our school has been looking at Koha for a
while and it looks like very powerful and customisable library software. The
biggest hesitation we have in switching over is how to get our current catalog
imported into Koha.

We currently have around 10,000 books in our library and we certainly don't
want to start from scratch having to enter them all again. Has anyone else
transferred their catalog from AccessIt or a similar system?

Cheers,

Agreed -- it's not in my budget either. $355 to find out what? A committee

Our charitable purpose is to maintain a *paper* copy library [1], and while
Captain Kirk's "to go where no man has gone before" is admirable (albeit
sexist, Captain Janeway notwithstanding), and that MARC might be considered

Try

apt-get purge koha-common

That makes it forget everything it knows about what might be installed,
there is some apt magic around config files that is possibly getting in
your way. Also try the --reinstall like I mentioned in the other email.

Yay - congratulations Argentina.

When we made the Koha back in the day, we watched the downloads start as the
sun tracked around the globe; from memory I believe Argentina was the first
country outside of NZ to get Koha up and running :)

(I'm sure Chris will correct me if I'm wrong ;) )

Well done.

Re: [Koha] Template or framework?

2013-10-07 Thread Hillyard, Cecil
In our fast add framework we have added a default value to the 952 tag subfield
3 "Materials specified and bound" which shows up on checkin. It alerts staff
that this is a Fast add and needs to be looked at by someone for evaluation.
We also have a default public note the says it is a fast add item.

Also our 245 has "FAST ADD" as a default to which staff are supposed to add
the item title.

shelving system is Byzantine at best, and made worse by current building works).

It's not just completeness of data, but keeping track of these books and their
records, and making sure they are updated. Because of the legacy card
catalogue, they also need to go back to the cards, check for other copies, add
item records (and location information) for them and remove the cards from the
catalogue (not to mention add subject headings, etc).

If I set the template to default to Hide in Opac, and include a 588 that says
Fast Add it should be easier to find the records that need attention and make
sure they're taken care of in a timely fashion.
Yes, I know a lot of this could be solved if they would only place a hold on
the books that they issue using a Fast Add record, but that hasn't worked so
far.
It's a little tricky trying to manage and train staff eight time zones away,
but we're mostly coping.

[Koha] Kohacon 2014 in Córdoba, Argentina

2013-10-07 Thread Mirko
Hi everybody,

Kohacon 2014 will take place in Córdoba, Argentina! Congratulations!

We have a clear vote of roughly 3:1. There are some duplicate votes
on both sides which I will consider software or server errors :P and
I will have a look at the unfinished votes later. I had one person
saying they could not finish the vote, later telling me that it
worked eventually. I cannot present final numbers at this point but
the result is clear.

I'd like to thank both Córdoba and Ibadan very much for offering to
be hosts for our conference!

If this is for a fast add and you're going to update the record later,
why do you need more fields? Is the completeness of the record the
only issue preventing the Fast Add method from working?

[Koha] Template or framework?

2013-10-07 Thread Elaine Bradtke
Background info:
We don't circulate a lot of materials (probably less than one item per
day on average). 80% of the book stock is not yet in Koha (we have a
legacy card catalogue). We only circulate books that we have more than
one copy - nothing else leaves the building.

When we brought the circulation system into play, I suggested to the
staff that they could use the Fast Add Framework to put in a brief
record before issuing something that's not already in Koha, and then
place a hold the item so when it's returned they can update the
catalogue.

This hasn't worked well for various reasons. The Fast Add framework is
lacking in critical fields. I've added a few, but there are still more
that we need.

I could either add the rest of the necessary fields to the Fast Add
framework (tedious, but possible) or, build a template for quickly
adding things on the fly.

I'm not sure which method is best.
The framework could be applied to a Z39.50 download, which would then
hide the extraneous fields and possibly result in a more accurate
catalogue record (the joy of cataloguing a book while on the front
desk with the phone ringing and a patron waiting and someone else
fussing with the photocopier right next to you).

The template is a familiar tool as I've already got a couple in place
for some of the more complex types of material, but unfortunately when
you duplicate a template for editing, you end up with all those extra
fields.

Or. . . a combination of both?

Any thoughts?

Elaine

Re: [Koha] RDA questions WAS: Re: Flippin' Yanks

2013-10-07 Thread Elaine Bradtke
Maybe what we need to do is to add the requisite fields into the
Default framework. It seems to have nearly every possible MARC field
already, what's a few more?
I had to add some fields into the RDA framework to get it to work for
us (we use some of the more archival fields among other things). Since
some of our Z39.50 downloads are coming in RDA format, we now have to
switch back and forth between the two.

Responding to a comment above about RDA being designed by committee. .
. A good friend of mine was a committee member (music specialist).
Evidently the powers that be ignored a lot of what the committee
members (active, experienced catalogers) said about RDA . As far as
music goes, RDA doesn't work all that well and rather than sort it
out, they just went ahead and launched it over the protests of the
committee members.

I've polled a variety of colleagues on both sides of the pond. . .
Oxford University has implemented it. . . smaller libraries are
carrying on with AAACR2, some are creating records in both at the same
time (!) and at least one library has told their cataloguers they are
not required to learn RDA, but may do so if they wish.

We're not implementing it because we can't afford a subscription to
the documentation to even see if it will work for us.

Forwarding this. Obviously copying the list does not work as Mirko noted earlier
