Re: [Koha] New to Koha, but very interested

2016-04-15 Thread Joseph Hogan

Hello Eric (and all others that helped:)

Thanks for the tips. I understand the process.

I found a good example of setting up the z39.50 in KOHA. Seems straight
forward.

A couple of questions arise from this:

1 - can I assume that the z39.50 connection will updater itself, or this
has to be done manually?
2 - the records are searchable at the local library, but I would presume
that they are indicated to be located elsewhere?
3 - When doing a search, will their be options to only search at the
local library, or will all records be searchable at all times.
4 - The use fo Z39.50 depends on the target server to have a MARC
something or another. How to I confirm that this is turned on/set up?
The libraries will all be using KOHA in the network, as we set them up.
How do I turn it on/set it up if needed?

Thanks!

Joseph

It actually depends on what you mean by looking for external library.

Koha doesn't /easily /support the search of external library out of
the box by the library's patrons through the OPAC (library's catalog).

However, librarians can set up Z39.50 targets in order to search
external libraries and import their records which speed up the
cataloguing process.

Re: [Koha] New to Koha, but very interested

2016-04-15 Thread Hernandez, Heather
Hi, Joseph--

We set up (very easily!) our Koha catalog so that anytime someone is
looking at a particular record, there is a "more searches" link on the
right--you can see it here:
http://keys.bywatersolutions.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=30395

We put in the search targets that our users might find most helpful, i.e.,
WorldCat.org, Open Library, San Francisco Public Library, etc.

One can also configure the "no results" screen pretty easily--we decided
not to put search targets on ours, but to put a "Contact a reference
librarian" link--you can see how ours looks here:
http://keys.bywatersolutions.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?q=ti%2Cphr%3Ahobbit
Our primary users are our staff, so we want to push them to contact us to
help with their research if they're not finding what they need--I imagine
that libraries which have user-initiated ILL/consortial borrowing have this
screen configured differently.

In the staff client, a "no results" search gives you a Z39.50 button, and
if you click that, you get a window that opens to execute your search--you
configure which search targets you'd like here, and you can select one or
more, select all, etc.

One thing I like very much about Koha is that it's easily customized to
suit one's users.

2016-04-15 Thread King, Fred
I don't think there's a direct link from the Koha search interface to WorldCat
(i.e., if you come up empty on your Koha search you could click a link to
repeat your search in Worldcat), but it would be easy enough to put a link to
http://worldcat.org on the search screen.

One thing I love about Koha is that it's infinitely* configurable. If you want
to add a MARC field, you can. If you want to make one up for local use, you
can.** Tweak the xsl files a bit and you can add all sorts of things.

Another thing I love is that when I was evaluating ILSs I was able to set up a
fully-functional library system on a spare PC in a few hours. I could point to
it and say "this has everything we need--all we have to buy is a server and
we'll save about $10,000 in licensing fees."

*Yes, infinitely.

Re: [Koha] New to Koha, but very interested

2016-04-15 Thread Joseph Hogan

Hello All,

I already feel like part of the family:)

I like the answers that I have received so far!

I am already very encouraged.

I think that VMs will be the easiest way to deploy a new libraries.

I thought of another question.

Being that we will be promoting the inter-library loan concept, which is
currently not available, but does it work for searching other libraries
to find books?

Is there a way for the librarian to have access to multiple libraries at
once when doing research to get the other books, or is this done one at
a time at other other libraries in the system?

Thanks for yoru feedback

Joseph

3. Yes, you can. You need the look at some coonfiguration files. But I

We found Koha and the features seem full and rich.

We have more technical questions about installing a new library and
sharing server with multiple libraries.

I will ask a couple of questions, and then follow up, depending on
the replies I get.

1 - The campus has more then one library on campus: 1 for physical
sciences 1 for medecine 1 for social sciences
How can this be treated? Can one installation cover for a campus
allow for the location data to include which building/library, or
even on which campus it might be located?

2 - Can we run multiple instances of Koha on the same server? I ask
because any other the documentation that I have read always mentioned
1 server, 1 koha. If this works well for us, there are a couple of
other libraries interested in working with us. We want to under stand
the resources needed. 1 koha per server, or many per server?

3 - Can Koha be installed to run from a particular folder? We
already have our server up and running, and if they can just be
installed in a directory of a web page installation?

This is just my beginning. We are trying to understand the software
in order to know what is possible or now.

Thanks!

Thanks! This is good tip!

Setcap-ing /usr/bin/zebrasrv-2.0 is what I had done before posting. But
this being the first time pushing it on anything other than I wanted
to know if there's any gotchas that I should keep in mind :-)

Since by default, only root can bind to ports less than 1024, the
stock koha-start-zebra won't let you do it, as it changes user to the
Koha instance user before starting zebrasrv. However, there are
several ways around this:

- use iptables to forward port 210 to zebrasrv
- run metaproxy or yazproxy to listen on port 210 and pass queries on
to zebrasrv; if you expect that the Z39.50 target will be heavily
used, this approach can also save system resources, as metaproxy can
cache query results.
- use capabilities and grant zebrasrv an exception so that it can bind
on a privileged port
- just use a non-privileged port; I don't know of any Z39.50 clients
that don't let the user specify a non-default port.

Galen

Hi Joe,

Here are my answers

1. Yes, you may, we use 1126 branches for one instutition, 6 for
another, etc. Koha supports branches.

2. Yes you can, we use 3 database servers, 8-10 web servers for big
installation.

3. Yes, you can. You need the look at some coonfiguration files. But I
suggest you use a specific server for your Koha insallation

and use the default values for future support.

We have more technical questions about installing a new library and

I will ask a couple of questions, and then follow up, depending on the
replies I get.

1 - The campus has more then one library on campus: 1 for physical
sciences 1 for medecine 1 for social sciences
How can this be treated? Can one installation cover for a campus
allow for the location data to include which building/library, or even
on which campus it might be located?

2 - Can we run multiple instances of Koha on the same server? I ask
because any other the documentation that I have read always mentioned
1 server, 1 koha. If this works well for us, there are a couple of
other libraries interested in working with us. We want to under stand
the resources needed. 1 koha per server, or many per server?

3 - Can Koha be installed to run from a particular folder? We already
have our server up and running, and if they can just be installed in a
directory of a web page installation?

This is just my beginning. We are trying to understand the software
in order to know what is possible or now.

Thanks!
