Yes. I've been running Koha in a virtual server at a remote site since
version 3.

If you do want to host it locally, I would recommend a single-purpose
computer, so it isn't slowed by other programs. Some functions are a bit
of a resource hog, though this is usually temporary.

I also recommend using Debian, not a derivative like Mint. It's possible
to run it under different OS, but it's much simpler with pure Debian.

I'll have to leave the other questions to those with more knowledge in
those topics.

Re: [Koha] Question about connect Azure AD and Colleague

2022-06-02 Thread Scott Owen
I haven't used it in a while, but I believe Koha can still use LDAP
to authenticate.
https://openschoolsolutions.org/koha-ldap-setup/

The one drawback to this was always :
The students had to login to Koha "1 time" before the account became active.
Being a K-12 school districtthis was sometimes just 1 time too
many...and my staff never really bought into it.
(they wanted students to just show up with everything working...the 1 login
was a apparently just to much)
At the college level, that 1 time login might not be a big deal (?)

We use our SIS as our authoritative database, and do hourly SQL pulls to
add new students to our on prem AD.
Once they are in AD, the same scripts run GCDS and GAPS to create google
accounts etc...
IF we used LDAP this would provision their Koha account as well (the AD
sync that is).

Re: [Koha] Question about connect Azure AD and Colleague

2022-06-02 Thread Coehoorn, Joel
We still have on-prem AD and use a different SIS. However, in some other
ways we are similar, and I believe what we are doing can work for you. And
that is:

1. Koha should get new users from the SIS, rather than AD. This is still a
manual process for us (download a csv report from our portal, upload to
koha), but it is idempotent (meaning librarians can do this as often as
they want without breaking things). The trick is writing the export report
to have student user accounts expire at the appropriate times at the end of
registered academic terms, and setting Koha's circulation rules to
understand how this should work for due dates near those expirations.
2. AD (whether Azure or on-prem) also depends on the SIS for new users, so
Koha users will always match AD users. The SIS becomes your source of truth
here.
3. Setup Koha to use SAML single sign on for authentication. We use a local
AD FS as the IdP, but Azure AD is not very different.

The result is Koha's user accounts are separate from AD but still always
match exactly, and when someone wants to log in to Koha it's checking AD
directly for the authentication via the SSO intermediary.

As for the Colleague<->Azure connection, that's kind of out of scope here,
but a quick google search indicates Colleague might also support SAML, such
that setting things up that way for one application gets you most of the
way there to making it work for the other, as well.

Re: [Koha] Arrangement of Fields on Items Form

2022-06-02 Thread Caroline Cyr La Rose

Hi,

It depends on your version of Koha, but in the most recent ones (at
least back to 21.05 which is the one I use), you can drag and drop
subfields to reorder them in the framework.

- Go to Administration > MARC bibliographic framework

- Edit the MARC structure for your framework

- Search for the item field (952 in MARC21, I'm not sure in UNIMARC...
maybe 995 or something like that?)

- Edit the subfields

- Drag and drop the tabs at the top in the order you want

- Save

- Edit an item and confirm the fields are in the chosen order

I just tried it and was able to put $z above $x. It's pretty neat!

I hoe this helps,

Caroline

Re: [Koha] Does Koha support barcode scanners and more questions?

2022-06-02 Thread Coehoorn, Joel
Koha needs a linux-based server. For a very small library with a single
circulation desk and limited web presence, you could certainly install
Ubuntu Desktop at the circulation desk, setup the Koha installation there,
and use Chrome on the same machine. Typically, though, you want a dedicated
server somewhere.

A barcode scanner is just a fancy keyboard. Really. You scan a code, and it
"types" what it scanned into whatever textbox has the focus. Any software
system that supports keyboards supports barcode scanners.

Not exactly sure what you're asking here. We've used an iPad to do
inventory, but never to scan barcodes. Rather than a camera, we pair a
bluetooth barcode reader to the iPad. The scanners can be had from Amazon
for about $40.

Re: [Koha] Problem in creating new authority types

2022-06-02 Thread Ms. Naveen Ali
Wishing you a good day,

I tried adding the Geographic Name authority to 260$a tag and CHRON_TERM
authority to 260$b tag by adding the authorities in the respective thesaurus
field in the bibliographic framework.

Then I imported some data using the framework.

Records were created but it seems that authorities were not created.
Because when i try searching for entered authorities, the search does not
return any result.

I have the global system parameters of
AutoCreateAuthorities  = Generate
BiblioAddsAuthorities  = Add

The other authorities are working fine.

Do I have to do some more customization for GEOGR_NAME and CHRON_TERM
authorities.

With thanks & best regards,

Hi,

First (a request), try not to cross post, especially when the question does
not have a developer / coding related context.

Second, traditionally name and place of publication are *not* authority
controlled in MARC21. However, it may be your local decision.

That said, have you already explored and found that Koha's Authorised
values not doing what you want? Authorised values for 260$a and 260$ may be
a better fit and you will also benefit from automatic filtering of the
values as your cataloguers do their work.

However, if you still want to use MARC21 authority control for 260$a and
260$b, you really DO NOT need to create new authority types as mentioned in
the wiki page you have referred to.

The place of publication can work as a Geographic Name authority and the
publisher can work as a Corporate name authority as per Koha's standard
authority frameworks.

Stepping outside these perimeters will mean you will have to have to get
your hands dirty with CCL queries, debugging zebra indexes and Koha's
search internals.

All the best going ahead.

By the way, "Koha" is a proper noun and not and acronym, and thus it is
incorrect to uppercase it as KOHA :-)

Cheers

Re: [Koha] Question about creating libraries in Koha -- possible bug

2022-06-02 Thread Fridolin SOMERS

Hi,

You may think of creating a Docker container with Debian/Ubuntu and use
packages.

Thanks, Jonathan and Fridolin.

We're not using a standard Debian environment. We use Amazon Linux and

The JSON::Validator module we have installed is 4.13.

I think we can work around the problem. We can still create new branch
libraries, even if we can't see the list, and they do show up elsewhere.
If we need to edit the library info, we can just enter the URL for the
form < .../cgi-bin/koha/admin/branches.pl?op=add_form=CODE >
so this doesn't appear to be a big problem.
