Damnit. The fix introduced in 3.18.06.1 was because fresh installs were
possible but upgrades weren't. My fix ended up making it so that
upgrades were possible, but fresh installs aren't.

Now I've hopefully tested all the combinations and didn't encounter any
 issues, so have uploaded 3.18.06.2.

2015-04-07 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Bruce,

I am on Debian 7.8 (wheezy).

I don't know solution to your problem, but the following may help others to
help you:

I was on Koha 3.18.4 (installed using packages) and tried '*apt-get upgrad*e'
and got the '*The following packages have been kept back*' message for
koha-common.

I tried '*aptitude upgrade*' and it upgraded to Koha 3.18.5 with addition
to '*The following NEW packages will be installed:
libdbix-connector-perl{a}*' message, which did not happen when I did '*apt-get
upgrade*'.

Now I'm upgraded to 3.18.5 and tried Z39.50 search and added a record with
item. No errors. Works fine.

 I am a bit embarrassed.
After discussing this problem with my IT wizard who actually looked at
callnumber.pl and understood it's inner workings, I know where the
 unwanted
numbers are coming from. Many of our call numbers consist of nothing more
than two upper case letters, for example QM. The plugin is looking at that
and seeing a prefix and adding sequential numbers to create a unique call
number. Our numbers are not unique.

Perhaps a brief explanation of what this plugin is meant to do would be a
 useful addition to the manual?
As I understand it, the plugin looks for any number of or combination of
 upper case letters, and/or punctuation.
It treats that information as a prefix, chooses the largest number assigned
to this prefix, and adds one to it. If there is no number it adds a space
and a number 1 to the end.
For example If I type in M, it looks for all the Ms in the call number
field, finds the one with the highest number and then adds the next number
in the sequence (for example M 123 exists, so it will make this one M 124).

Unfortunately that won't work with our system. But at least I know I'm not
 going mad.

described above. But, it vanishes again - it does not appear in the MARC
after saving. The 952$o is populated automatically with the information
  from 942 h.

With the plugin enabled in $942 h, after editing the field if I click on
the editing box to the right of the 942 h (this is only there when the
plugin is activated) - it inserts the 1
My original aim for activating the plugin in the 942 h was to pull the
call number from our 099 field. But it doesn't do that, and it has to
 be
manually input. However if I disable the plugin in 942 and enable it in
952, it will pull the information directly from the 099 field to 952 o.
 But
if you edit an existing item's 952 o, it adds the 1.

Note: our callnumbers are not unique. I wonder if this is part of the
problem? I was just looking at
  http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=13364 when it
dawned on me that the plugin might be built with the assumption that full
  callnumbers would be unique.

At any rate the plugin's behaviour seems contrary to (at least my)
expectations. Perhaps I should file a bug report, once I figure out how
 to
describe it. I am not the techie on the team ;-)
Maybe someone who really understands how it works could explain what it
  does and does not do?

Hi Sina,

I don't understand what exactly you are trying to do.

If you just want to transfer data from Koha's database to Oracle database,
then these might be helpful:

Re: [Koha] Koha 3.18 : Search Patrons -- Possible Bug

2014-12-03 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi guys,

So, this morning, I noticed that Google Chrome (Windows) did not have the
issue. Browsing patron working, and patron search working.

I checked the console, no errors. I checked the browser version and it was
still 39.0.2171.71 (no auto upgraded).

But issue has resolved automagically. Not sure how.

May be it was a cache issue.

Just checked same thing in Chromium 37.0.2062.120 Built on Debian 7.6 (64

and search and browse patron work perfectly there. Not even a warning.

So problem seems to be in Google Chrome 39.0.2171.71 on Windows.

Entering a name of a patron and clicking Search does not work.

And clicking any alphabet (for browsing) results in another error entry:

In Firefox, things work correctly. Search works. Browsing patrons

[Koha] Koha 3.18 : Search Patrons -- Possible Bug

2014-11-30 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi guys,

My server is Debian 7, and Koha was installed using the packages
(koha-common).

I upgraded to Koha 3.18, and now searching the patrons works only if I
enter borrower number.

Searching by name, first or surname, email address does not work (search
returns nothing).

Okay, the search *and *the browsing work on Firefox.

And the search or browsing does NOT work in Google Chrome 39.0.2171.71.

Re: [Koha] Feedback on Bug 13290 -- Returning items from the checkouts table

2014-11-20 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Owen,

How about when we alter and save some system preference(s),
a gray semi-transparent box appears like this:
http://s4.postimg.org/ggaj5ni0d/tmp.png

One point in its favor can be the element of UI consistency,
perhaps.

Highlighting a row seems good too. But what if not all the rows
are visible on a certain screen's view area when the staff will press
the check-in button. Could happen.

Hi Nicole,

How may I help?

You'll need to explain some specifics what needs to be done (to a first

I can follow your instructions, get something done, and then add a page in
Wiki later and describe how it's done.

At the moment, I think the wiki does not have much info about how to help
with the manual.

Re: [Koha] email notices about hold awaiting

2014-10-23 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi,

So the thing is that when we check-in the book, we get the Hold Found
slip.

We press Confirm Hold and an email will be generated to the guy in
hold queue.

If we pressed Ignore on the slip then an email will not be sent to the
next guy in hold queue. We'll need to re-check-in the book and the
confirm Hold slip will appear again, and we press the Confirm Hold
button. An email will be sent.

But if first person cancel his hold after receiving email for holds
awaiting pick up, System does not send email to the person in queue. So He
 can Pick it from library.

In 3.16.4, I don't see an option for the user to cancel or suspend hold
that's already waiting to be picked. See: http://i.imgur.com/4WoRkPy.png

Just one question while I try to confirm the behavior (and someone may

Re: [Koha] Should Koha support old versions of Internet Explorer?

2014-10-02 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Owen,

I think our developers' time is precious and should not be wasted on
supporting IE6 or IE7. If some organization wants to use the said versions
and want to use the latest version of Koha, then they can pay for support.
They can't have it both ways.

As you know (being a web developer) that these IEs are not standards
compliant browsers and have all kinds of strange quirks and idiotic
behaviors. It's a nightmare to make modern web technologies work on these
browsers properly.

 - In your use of Koha are you required to use any version of Internet
Explorer and if so what version?

No. And today's users have their smartphones and laptops; and a library's
PCs are there and it takes few clicks to install Firefox, Chrome or any
other decent browser.

I can imagine some environments may have restrictions in place to not let
users install programs. And for that, anyone can keep a portable version of
Firefox http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable in a usb
flash disk / or copy on a PC.

Basically where there is a will there is a way. It makes no sense to me
that any sane developer would waste his life (life is just a sum of
moments, minutes, hours we have) on IE6 IE7 quirks.

 - In your use of Koha do you work with library patrons who are
required to use any version of Internet Explorer?

No.

 - In your opinion what should be the minimum supported version of
 Internet Explorer?

If you are bored and want to amuse yourself, then perhaps some IE8 support.
No lower.

Re: [Koha] Improving Search Results

2014-09-25 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Joel,

Libraries all over the world (
http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_Users_Worldwide) would not be
using Koha if its search does not work :) So my guess is there is something
wrong with your set-up. Search works very well out of the box -- if Koha is
installed properly.

The information you provided is OK but it is missing a key ingredient: your
set-up. There may be a hundred ways to install Koha, and one recommended
way.

We don't know what distribution you used. We don't know what method was
used to set-up Koha. We don't know what version of Koha you are using. We
don't know if you recently upgraded or something like that. We don't know
if search was working before and not working now, or is it that ever since
you set-up Koha you are using it for cataloging only and not circulation.

All we know is the search does not work. Cause of it could be a number of
reasons.

Arslan

On Fri, Sep 26, 2014 at 2:32 AM, Coehoorn, Joel jcoeho...@york.edu wrote:

I support a relatively new Koha installation, and the search quality we've
experienced has been exceptionally poor. What can I do to improve search
 quality?

Here's an example I received today from a librarian:

 ---
On 4/21/14 I cataloged *The Word of Promise from Jesus: Dramatic Passages
from the Gospels*. Jim Caviezel was listed as an author since he wrote the
foreword. It was given two barcodes since the book also contained a CD.
The barcodes are 212580 for the book and 212581 for the CD.

L had a request from Interlibrary loan for this title. We searched KOHA
every way we could think to pull this title up and continued to get a
 message that nothing was found.

I went to World Cat and found the title with the indication that it was
available at York College. In desperation, I checked the basic LC call
number and found BT 306. I had L_ go search the BT 306 section of the
shelves and he found the book!

Then after finding the book and having the barcode number, I tried to pull
the book up by searching for the barcode number. Again, nothing found.

As a last resort, I went into the Reports area of KOHA and searched for the
barcode number. Guess what! The Reports area found it. I clicked on the
Biblio number and up came the record. Now the record was in there! Why
wouldn't it come up when we searched for it?

 Another example.

Dr. E asked me to order the 2014 Award winning books. I found
the list and checked KOHA for each title to confirm that we didn't have a
copy in the library. A couple of the books seemed familiar, but all I got
was not found. I prepared the requisition and ordered the titles.

Well, the books came in last Friday. Tuesday I cataloged them. When I
downloaded the cataloging from OCLC into KOHA, two of the titles didn't go
in because they were duplicates!! I went back and tried to pull them up in
KOHA and guess what! They came up. So this caused us to have 2 copies of
these two titles. Fortunately it didn't cost more than $20 to get these
titles, but KOHA needs to be working correctly so this doesn't happen
 again.

 -

The point of this is that, from our librarians perspective, without a
better search experience, Koha is broken.

Those are their words, not mine. Here's the thing: when I run a search in
Koha, I do get back lots of results from our catalog that are highly
relevant to the search terms. But these are exact title matches, and they
 come back with Not found.

 How can I improve this?

Hi,

Your MARC file has the barcode field as Chris said, see:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/17hfzvv5obvjmvl/test.mrk?dl=0

I was able to import the above record in my Koha, see this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/t76q81nt4ct555p/black_beauty.png?dl=0*

I just changed the barcode (to make it unique for my installation),
permanent location, current location and koha item type to my intallation's
requirements and it works.

That means that perhaps you need to double check your 952a, 952b, 952y
match with what you have set in your Basic Parameters settings of your
installation.

Hi Layale,

It's always a good idea to include details about Koha set-up such as
whether it is a package install or tarball install. Also are you on Ubuntu?
I'm asking as it might help others troubleshoot the problem... because a
quick Google revealed this

Answer to whether you are using icu or not may also help others.

Good luck,

Hello Dan

Will it be possible for you to record your talks about linked data /
schema.org / RDF and share them for people who are living in lands far, far
away? :)

Anything would do: Videos recorded using a mobile phone, or even just audio.

I'm giving a few talks in the next couple of months about the
schema.orgRDFa integration that Koha offers, and I was hoping I might
 be able to put
together some composite images that show libraries (big and small, around
the world) that are now more connected to the web of linked data as a
 result of that effort.

Re: [Koha] MARC Edit

2012-09-21 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Agha

Dear sirs, hello

I'm sure you meant dear sirs *and* misses :)

Just two things that came to my mind, for the rest, someone with proper
expertise may soon reply to you.

I hope you created a new framework like explained here:
http://manual.koha-community.org/3.6/en/catadmin.html#marcbibframeworks

We can’t edit the framework every time we need to add a tag or a subfield,
especially which we might not use this tags with all the records we’re
 cataloging.

And, well yes, we should not do that... editing the framework every time we
need to add a tag or subfield. But, what we *should* do is we enable all
the fields we *may* need during cataloging, and when we do the cataloging,
we simply leave the fields we might not need for a _specific_ record.
Simple.

Re: [Koha] koha-httpd.conf and cPanel

2012-06-03 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Andi

It is dedicated hosting (VDS/VPS).

Hmm. But you are doing a manual install on some distro other than Debian or
Ubuntu I suppose?

I may not be able to help you with the manual installation. I did it a long
time ago... and forgotten most of stuff.

But I can tell you that on Debian the installation procedure is very easy
and you won't have to configure virtual hosts. All you'll have to do is
tell apache to listen to 8080 port (assuming the default 80 will be your
OPAC).

Anyway, I'm still new to this. You may want to wait for someone experienced
to reply. They are busy in KohaCon however I think.

Good Luck.

[Koha] Can anyone help a new Koha user?

2012-05-18 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Stewart

If the only reason you are trying to install Koha on Windows is that you
don't know how to install and use Linux then I think we need to find some
way we can help you set up a Linux box and help you set up Koha on it.

Once Koha is up and running on a Linux (preferably Debian) PC, then more
people will be able to help you with issues and questions you may have
later on.

Now about helping you to set up Debian Linux first, then Koha:

How about you spend you time and effort on learning how to install Debian
on a PC. I assure you it will be worth the effort. You can find help online
how to do that. And, I'm thinking, perhaps I can help you set up Debian on
a PC on a Sunday using chat (#koha, Yahoo etc), or Skype. Have not thought
much about it yet. Just an idea. But seems possible. We can talk about it.

Once Debian is set-up, then installing Koha using Debia koha-common package
is very easy.

You decide. Be brave. Don't be afraid of Linux.

arslan

Hi everyone,
I'm an English teacher at a high school in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China. I'm
not a librarian, and have never used catalog software before. I'm helping
some other English teachers here put together an English library for the
students, and I have been recommended Koha by a number of librarians.

I am not very technically proficient. I have never used Linux, so have
opted for a Windows install. I used Raja Biswas' Youtube
 videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou7WgoeSmOcas a guide. The
 installers I used are:

  - ActivePerl 5.8.8.820-MSWin32-x86-274739
  - Apache 2.0.59-win32-x86-nossl
  - MySQL-4.0.26-win32
  - Koha2.2.8-W32-R0

I found that using these installers that Koha would actually install
(previous attempts with the latest versions of Perl, SQL etc failed).

So, it installed fine, but when I type in intranet or opac it gives me
the dreaded 500 server error: Premature end of script headers:
 mainpage.pl
 .

Re: [Koha] Right To Left in Arabic KOHA

2012-05-03 Thread Arslan Farooq
Hi Ruth :)

This will be very very, very cool. Thank you so much.

Take good care,
arslan

I've had occasion recently to look this problem over, despite not being a
speaker of any right-to-left languages, and there are two major parts of
 the problem here:

 1) String translation (which Koha handles with Pootle)
 2) Layout translation (things flushing right instead of left, table column
 order, and so on).

Koha handles the string-translation part very well, *if* the translation
team has done that work; many translations remain only partial, so there
are still lots of English words appearing on the pages. Naturally, anyone
bilingual who wants to help Koha grow should be encouraged to participate
(at http://translate.koha-community.org) in getting the strings
 translated!

The layout-translation? Not so much. The code automatically inserts
'dir=rtl' in the html tag at the page header, for languages so
designated, but the default CSS still contains many 'float: left' and
'text-align: left' directives, which causes the pages to look very strange
for right-to-left readers. It is that problem I've been looking into, and
I believe I have a solution in the works; it is functioning on my OPAC test
server on my laptop, with English and Arabic installed, and behaving the
way I would expect it to.

 My solution has four requirements:
   1) It cannot disrupt left-to-right pages; if a library has both English
and Arabic as choices, both need to work.
   2) It should be generalized, so that any RTL language can use it.
   3) It should be semi-automatic; at most, a system-preference needs to be
 set to make it work.
   4) It should *not* be a complete new set of templates, which would make
 upkeep a bigger problem.

 The approach I'm testing right now meets all four of these requirements;
you just translate the templates with the script at
misc/translator/translate, as you do now, and enable the language in the
system preferences, as you do now, and it Just Works. There is still some
CSS tweaking and testing to be done, and the task of extending the solution
into the staff client, but I'm on it.

After I finish this patch, hopefully in the next week or two, I will be
releasing it for the community; it should easily apply to 3.6.x, 3.8.x, and
 master.
