Hi Bruce, I am on Debian 7.8 (wheezy). I tried '*aptitude upgrade*' and it upgraded to Koha 3.18.5 with addition to '*The following NEW packages will be installed: libdbix-connector-perl{a}*' message, which did not happen when I did '*apt-get upgrade*'. Re: [Koha] Unexpected behaviour 942 $h (3.18)
Hi Elaine, Nothing to be embarrassed about. This happens. And it was an interesting read :) Arslan -- Sent from my phone. On Jan 23, 2015 7:32 AM, Elaine Bradtke e...@efdss.org wrote: I am a bit embarrassed. After discussing this problem with my IT wizard who actually looked at callnumber.pl and understood it's inner workings, I know where the unwanted numbers are coming from. Many of our call numbers consist of nothing more than two upper case letters, for example QM. The plugin is looking at that and seeing a prefix and adding sequential numbers to create a unique call number. Our numbers are not unique. Perhaps a brief explanation of what this plugin is meant to do would be a useful addition to the manual? As I understand it, the plugin looks for any number of or combination of upper case letters, and/or punctuation. It treats that information as a prefix, chooses the largest number assigned to this prefix, and adds one to it. If there is no number it adds a space and a number 1 to the end. For example If I type in M, it looks for all the Ms in the call number field, finds the one with the highest number and then adds the next number in the sequence (for example M 123 exists, so it will make this one M 124). Unfortunately that won't work with our system. But at least I know I'm not going mad. On Thu, Jan 22, 2015 at 6:52 PM, Elaine Bradtke e...@efdss.org wrote: With the plugin callnumber.pl activated in 942 $h and 952$o : the 1 appears after the call number in 942 $h as it is being saved as described above. But, it vanishes again - it does not appear in the MARC after saving. The 952$o is populated automatically with the information from 942 h. With the plugin enabled in $942 h, after editing the field if I click on the editing box to the right of the 942 h (this is only there when the plugin is activated) - it inserts the 1 My original aim for activating the plugin in the 942 h was to pull the call number from our 099 field. But it doesn't do that, and it has to be manually input. However if I disable the plugin in 942 and enable it in 952, it will pull the information directly from the 099 field to 952 o. But if you edit an existing item's 952 o, it adds the 1. Note: our callnumbers are not unique. I wonder if this is part of the problem? I was just looking at http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=13364 when it dawned on me that the plugin might be built with the assumption that full callnumbers would be unique. At any rate the plugin's behaviour seems contrary to (at least my) expectations. Perhaps I should file a bug report, once I figure out how to describe it. I am not the techie on the team ;-) Maybe someone who really understands how it works could explain what it does and does not do? Re: [Koha] Koha 3.18 : Search Patrons -- Possible Bug
Hi guys, So, this morning, I noticed that Google Chrome (Windows) did not have the issue. Browsing patron working, and patron search working. I checked the console, no errors. I checked the browser version and it was still 39.0.2171.71 (no auto upgraded). But issue has resolved automagically. Not sure how. May be it was a cache issue. We'll need to re-check-in the book and the confirm Hold slip will appear again, and we press the Confirm Hold button. An email will be sent. Re: [Koha] Improving Search Results
Hi Joel, Libraries all over the world ( http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_Users_Worldwide) would not be using Koha if its search does not work :) So my guess is there is something wrong with your set-up. Search works very well out of the box -- if Koha is installed properly. The information you provided is OK but it is missing a key ingredient: your set-up. There may be a hundred ways to install Koha, and one recommended way. We don't know what distribution you used. We don't know what method was used to set-up Koha. We don't know what version of Koha you are using. We don't know if you recently upgraded or something like that. We don't know if search was working before and not working now, or is it that ever since you set-up Koha you are using it for cataloging only and not circulation. All we know is the search does not work. Cause of it could be a number of reasons. Arslan On Fri, Sep 26, 2014 at 2:32 AM, Coehoorn, Joel jcoeho...@york.edu wrote: I support a relatively new Koha installation, and the search quality we've experienced has been exceptionally poor. What can I do to improve search quality? Here's an example I received today from a librarian: --- On 4/21/14 I cataloged *The Word of Promise from Jesus: Dramatic Passages from the Gospels*. Jim Caviezel was listed as an author since he wrote the foreword. It was given two barcodes since the book also contained a CD. The barcodes are 212580 for the book and 212581 for the CD. L had a request from Interlibrary loan for this title. We searched KOHA every way we could think to pull this title up and continued to get a message that nothing was found. I went to World Cat and found the title with the indication that it was available at York College. In desperation, I checked the basic LC call number and found BT 306. I had L_ go search the BT 306 section of the shelves and he found the book! Then after finding the book and having the barcode number, I tried to pull the book up by searching for the barcode number. Again, nothing found. As a last resort, I went into the Reports area of KOHA and searched for the barcode number. Guess what! The Reports area found it. I clicked on the Biblio number and up came the record. Now the record was in there! Why wouldn't it come up when we searched for it? Another example. Dr. E asked me to order the 2014 Award winning books. I found the list and checked KOHA for each title to confirm that we didn't have a copy in the library. A couple of the books seemed familiar, but all I got was not found. I prepared the requisition and ordered the titles. Well, the books came in last Friday. Tuesday I cataloged them. When I downloaded the cataloging from OCLC into KOHA, two of the titles didn't go in because they were duplicates!! I went back and tried to pull them up in KOHA and guess what! They came up. So this caused us to have 2 copies of these two titles. Fortunately it didn't cost more than $20 to get these titles, but KOHA needs to be working correctly so this doesn't happen again. - The point of this is that, from our librarians perspective, without a better search experience, Koha is broken. Those are their words, not mine. Here's the thing: when I run a search in Koha, I do get back lots of results from our catalog that are highly relevant to the search terms. But these are exact title matches, and they come back with Not found. How can I improve this? Re: [Koha] Right To Left in Arabic KOHA
Hi Ruth :) This will be very very, very cool. Thank you so much. Take good care, arslan I've had occasion recently to look this problem over, despite not being a speaker of any right-to-left languages, and there are two major parts of the problem here: 1) String translation (which Koha handles with Pootle) 2) Layout translation (things flushing right instead of left, table column order, and so on). Koha handles the string-translation part very well, *if* the translation team has done that work; many translations remain only partial, so there are still lots of English words appearing on the pages. Naturally, anyone bilingual who wants to help Koha grow should be encouraged to participate (at http://translate.koha-community.org) in getting the strings translated! The layout-translation? Not so much. The code automatically inserts 'dir=rtl' in the html tag at the page header, for languages so designated, but the default CSS still contains many 'float: left' and 'text-align: left' directives, which causes the pages to look very strange for right-to-left readers. It is that problem I've been looking into, and I believe I have a solution in the works; it is functioning on my OPAC test server on my laptop, with English and Arabic installed, and behaving the way I would expect it to. My solution has four requirements: 1) It cannot disrupt left-to-right pages; if a library has both English and Arabic as choices, both need to work. 2) It should be generalized, so that any RTL language can use it. 3) It should be semi-automatic; at most, a system-preference needs to be set to make it work. 4) It should *not* be a complete new set of templates, which would make upkeep a bigger problem. The approach I'm testing right now meets all four of these requirements; you just translate the templates with the script at misc/translator/translate, as you do now, and enable the language in the system preferences, as you do now, and it Just Works. There is still some CSS tweaking and testing to be done, and the task of extending the solution into the staff client, but I'm on it. After I finish this patch, hopefully in the next week or two, I will be releasing it for the community; it should easily apply to 3.6.x, 3.8.x, and master. ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha
Re: [Koha] Koha Digest, Vol 78, Issue 55
Hi Sander I've installed Debian Squeeze (6.0.4-i386-xfce) and i'm wondering where can i find a step by step guide (with all packeges requires, apache, mysq, zebra and perl configuration) for the installation of Koha 3.8 on this operating system, all the guide that i've seen seems to be too generic, for my little knowledges. This might help you a bit (or not)... after installing Debian: 1: add this to a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/koha.list file: deb http://debian.koha-community.org/koha squeeze main 2. wget -O- http://debian.koha-community.org/koha/gpg.asc | sudo apt-key add - 3: add in /etc/apt/sources.list: deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main dev-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main 4. apt-get update 5. apt-get install koha-common 6: apt-get install mysql-server 7: a2enmod rewrite 8: /etc/init.d/apache2 restart 9: koha-create --create-db aridlib 10: Run web installer 11. a2dissite default Cheers, Arslan Farooq ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha
