I think the reason that your pistons are overextending into the barrels is that you have the wrong crankshaft. Check out Harry Fenton's excellent web site on Continentals. http://www.bowersflybaby.com/tech/fenton.htm He explains all the ins and outs of modifying Continentals. At our field we had a Continental with a mix of parts, C-85, C-90, O-200 and that baby made around 130hp! Never saw a Luscombe perform so well ! Wayne and Kathy Tokarz Corsair Enterprises Ltd. Hey Ray! I was wondering how your project was coming along. I'm glad to hear you'll be moving on it. I talked to a guy in Texas who had some wings for sale. you might want to contact me about them if you are interested. When are you coming through Biloxi next? You can zstop in and see the KR2 I picked up in October. Glenn Martin KR2 N1333A Biloxi, MS

Don't think the "no work" will get you more time for your project, I have been retired for 11 years and I started on my KR three years ago and have only managed to get the two sides done. More thinking than actually doing. My fantasy was that now that my youngest child was off to college I would have tons of time. I don't know what happened but that glut of time I expected never materialized. However, I am making progress on several fronts. 1. I hope to build the wings over Christmas vacation. Since I do not know how to fiberglass and I want to make sure I do it right (not so that it looks right but actually is right) I got a guy in the fiberglass boat business to help me and we should be doing the wings before the end of the year. That will be a big step. 2. At that same time, I will be working with two guys from my home airport. I feel that I am very lucky in that 2 guys who are now "hangar bums" are both retired Delta mechanics. Both with A&P and A&I certifications. They have offered to review all of my wiring/cotrols etc. to let me know if I have done it correctly. Whenever I get to the point of actually flying the KR, one of them will probably do that first test flight as he was also a test pilot and ferried many a plane (mostly to South America). You can't buy that kind of experience. 3. I have all the materials and pieces/parts to put my engine together. Just need to find the time to do it. If I didn't have to go to work all the time I would get so much done. So, to review. I plan to have the plane finished before spring. Hopefully to start the engine during the same time frame. Target? The Gathering. Reality? We'll see. Ray New Orleans --- On Sat, 12/6/08, Mark Langford wrote: From: Mark Langford Subject: KR> progress? The Continentals are built significantly different from the VWs. The bottom oil seal for the cylinder fits between the cylinder base and a chamfer in the case. I suppose I could shim it some if I wanted to invest the time and effort into building the shims, but there are other things that aren't going to fit properly if I start shimming the cylinders. Without doing something significantly different for a seal, it would likely be a real oil leaker. If I was really serious about building a high compression barn burner of an engine, I would buy the 10:1 pistons from Light Speed and buy new cylinders to run them in. Since I'm not interested in making that kind of investment right now, and reliability is more important to me than HP, I've converted my engine back to stock and will see how it does. Hopefully, the better breathing exhaust will make up for the HP lost to converting the engine back to stock. I always figured the higher compression pistons were worth 5 - 7 HP. Some testing is definitely in order once I get the plane back into the air, hopefully next weekend. -Jeff Scott Los Alamos, NM -- John Gotschall wrote: I wondered the same thing, works with vw doesn't it?
