KR> Updates on the project

2011-01-23 Thread Jose Fuentes
Oh BTW, I need to look up the firewall in the plans I purchased. Would you
believe I think I have alumn foil for cooking with that feels thicker then
what was on the plane. I stripped that off with my fingers. Whomever owned
that project used staples, roofing nails and regular home depot bolts to
hold what looks like used to be a front landing gear. Though the project
looks like someone else started it and got it to a boat stage (and did a
good job) and then someone else finished it before whatever happened that it
got to the condition that it did.

Wish I knew more of the history, I'm going to have to be very careful and
look everything over.

Yea that's what I thought, the old wings had tanks because there are lines
going to them. If I want to have any distance I will probably have to either
replace this tank or put in wing tanks too.

Well, it looks like given that and the fact that the one that was stressed
to failure at the Gathering looked like luan (probably was well-weathered
mahogany), mahogany is plenty good enough! I checked the KR-2 plans, and
they say mahogany, birch, or popular...

If you meant to say that mahogany plywood is lighter than birch plywood,
that's true, but I believe the plans call for birch plywood on the spar
faces, rather than mahogany. Mahogany is fine on the fuselage, however, and
a great place to save a little weight, at a cost. I used mahogany for my
fuselage sides.

A very important point is the choice of the wood what you use for the spars,
or the entire airframe.(you know that Sitka Spruce is much lighter than
Douglas Fir).

2011-01-23 Thread herbert fürle
when you make a weight calculation for the wings,I think it does'nt matter
what kind of airfoil you use for your kr .( I approve all thoughts of Mark
Langford's reply).A very important point is the choice of the wood what you use
for the spars, or the entire airframe.(you know that Sitka Spruce is much
lighter than Douglas Fir). Also a big difference in weight is,how accurate you
work on your wings(not only the wings,I mean general on the entire
airframe).Ongoing with the first glue-joints right through the way you glass
the entire surfaces. You must know ,there are many ways to save-or add weight to
your project! Good luck for your decisions whatever you make!

Your size is not a problem. Just widen the fuselage and extend your area in
front of the main spar two inches and you will have a very comfortable 2S.

I'm still a year or more away from beginning on a project, and I'm
considering a KR-2S. But I'd really like to try one on for size before I
make a decision. A friend began building one 20 yrs ago +/- but got no
further than building the boat when it became apparent to him the the
aircraft was just going to be too small (and he's considerably shorter than
I am).

I'm 6'0" and 200lbs. My preferred option would be to sit in a 2S, canopy
closed, and see how it fits and what might be tweaked if it doesn't. I'm in
Lakeland, is anyone coming to Sun 'n Fun?

There's never been a spar failure of a KR built per plans, so the spar is
plenty strong enough already...unless you count the deliberate failure at
the Gathering when we broke one on the ground for kicks, and it was very
impressive how far they bent before failure.

I'd go the weight-saving way, personally (and that's what I'll do on my next
plane). There's a spar analysis spreadsheet at
http://www.acrodesigns.com/excel/SparStrength.xls that would allow you to
enter the stock spar dimensions of the plans version, extend the center
spacing, and then "back into" a spar cap thickness. Of course then you'd
have to customize your wing attach fittings for the thinner spar caps, so
maybe the extra pound is better after all...
