KR> Wing extension

Hi Mark
I bought a KR2 Project witch I am extending 14" to the back. It still have
the stock 20.8 ft wingspan.
What difference did the extension on the wing make?

KR> 14.7 AFR gauges

2011-01-27 Thread Larry H.
Mark L.

If you were going to have only one EGT probe on a Corvair engine, which
cylinder
would be the most beneficial to place it on? I still have some of the one cyl
EGTs and see some for sale occasionally really cheap.
When I first started flying in 1969 (dinosaur days) most private planes did not
have EGTs, just the cool guys were starting to have them and then usually only
one probe/cylinder EGTs. Alcor was the best at the time and then later
developed
the first multi cyl EGTs that I remember. Those gages had one needle readout
and
a dial to switch to 4 different probes/cylinders. The pilot could only see a
readout on one cylinder at a time, dial, see cyl #1, dial see cyl #2 etc. If
you
developed a problem on a cylinder that you weren't switched to then you missed
it, unless something bad happened of course. Things have changed dramatically
since those days thank goodness.

Don,

You might check with Steve Bennett at GPASC who supplies the one piece gear
for the Sonerai aircraft. Steve used this gear on a modified KR-2 he was
building at one time in the past.

I didn't say it wouldn't work on just one cylinder, just that most
applications try to cover as many cylinders as possible, probably to get the
best overall gas sample for the highest quality reading. I have no doubt
that reading only one cylinder would yield useful information.

I've received several e-mails, some good, some disappointing, like
the one from Sid. I'm sorry the date change has messed up the plans
of some of the attendees. I'll try to make the reason for change a
bit more clear.

It's not a matter of KR types attending the AOPA happening. The
problem arose when AOPA scheduled their east coast Light Sport Expo
event on the same date as the Light Sprot Expo at Mt.Vernon. It was
a matter of Mt.Vernon airport cancelling their event or changing the
date. The only other date that would work for them was the date of
our Gathering. Having the two events on the same date would be
"unworkable", especially for the KR crowd. The entire ramp would be
closed off from the terminal to the FBO with an $8 entry fee. The
airport had in fact considered cancelling the event and held of their
decision until after Chris had attended Sebering and talked to the
vendors. They all encouraged him to hold the event.

So, to make the best of a bad situation, moving the Gathering back
one week seems to be the best solution for everyone involved. I
regret that changing the date will keep some of the regular attendees
from attending this year. This will be my 21st consecutive Gathering
and I know how much I look forward to the Gathering each year. I'm
guessing I may need medication for depression the year I have to
break my attendance string.

OK, that makes sense. Maybe this is not for me after all. My plan is to run

I don't know of anybody that only monitors one cylinder. Mine measures
three, Joe Horton has two, with each measuring three, all automobiles
measure all cylinders at once downstream.

>>2. Would you want to adjust the mixture on takeoff by this gauge to

You want to take off with the mixture a tad rich to minimize the possibility
of detonation, and for max power. It won't take you long to figure out
where the mixture meter needs to be set to get that. On my AFR gauge that's
with the second LED from the top lit, and the top one no lit.

>>changes to touch it?

With my Ellison (and I'm guessing most other carbs) a change of throttle
setting will also change the mixture. I adjust my mixture quite often while
flying, especially after initial climbout, as I climb through 5000' feet or
so, and then when I'm at final cruise altitude and have backed off to cruise
rpm (about 3050, most of the time). And not just to 14.7:1, but far below
that, with only the lowest LED blinking occasionally. There's more on that
at http://www.n56ml.com/corvair/o2meter/ .

I highly recommend using steel angle instead of the aluminum which is
called for in the manual. The reason is that the aluminum bracket can and
will fail causing you to loose your counterbalance weight

Or, Like I did just weld a gusset to the bottom surface and right angle of
the alum. bracket.

Well thank you Sid! Ever since I came to see you last weekend I have been
pondering the AFR gauge. Although I can't use the nice bright laser red unit
you have because my cockpit is being done in a military style (black face
gauges with white needles) I am hooked on the idea and will install one of
these gadgets once I find one that can works for my style. But I have a few
questions I hope someone can answer.

1. With EGT we normally monitor all cyl but with AFR we are typically only
monitoring one. Is there a chance you could run one of the other cylinders too
lean and burn a valve?

2. Would you want to adjust the mixture on takeoff by this gauge to maximize
HP?

3. Once leaned to 14.7 afr is there any reason other than an altitude changes
to touch it.

Thanks again Sid for spending so much time showing me you plane. Hope mine is
half as nice.

KR> Aileron Counter Wt Bracket ?

2011-01-27 Thread Mark Jones
Victor,
I highly reccommend using steel angle instead of the aluminum which is
called for in the manual. The reason is that the aluminum bracket can and
will fail causing you to loose your counterbalance weight. This exact this
happened to Jim Faughn at the Gathering in Red Oak, IA. As far as the
weight, it is best to make one out of lead. The amount of lead needed
depends on how much it takes to counterbalance your aileron. You can shape
it any way you want. Use your imagination. Mine is basically rectangle and I
did a fairing on the wing in front of it for the airflow.

I would really like to have any date except the 16th & 17th. Joanne has a

for the past 30 years except last year when she came to the gathering with

go to the Pow-Wow and I will go to the gathering. This was done a couple of

Gathering attendees,

I have been communicating with Chris Collins for the last week or so
about the necessity of changing the date for this years Gathering due
to event conflicts at the Mt.Vernon airport. Read his e-mail below
for the details. Bottom line is that the only way to work around the
conflicts is to move our Gathering date back one week to September 16
and 17. I sincerely hope this date change will not cause anyone to
change their plans to attend the Gathering, especially those planning
to attend from outside the U.S.A.

If anyone has major concerns about this change in dates, please get
back to me at fles...@frontier.com

I will work with Bob Lee to insure our foreign visitors are contacted.

I will be posting, in the next week or so, a list of volunteers
needed in the areas of judging, awards, forums, etc.. Also, I have
contacted the Holiday Inn for bookings and that info will be posted
to the Gathering web page in the next few days. I'll be getting
started on the hats and shirts as soon as my supplier gets back from vacation.

Here we go again :-) How many days, Jones???
