KR> Clearance between leg & foam/glass

2011-05-26 Thread phillip matheson
is there any flexing & if so how much clearance do I leave. Or what have
others done.

Robin

I foamed and glassed completely with out a gap. But I only used a single
layer of glass from the wing to the leg.
There is some minor cracks around that area but I am not concerned.

So if the cracks area worry, place a protection battier around the leg,,
glass it, then remove the barrier to have a gap between the leg and inner
wing.

I will send you a photo when I go for a fly this morning.

Hello PhilThanks for letting me know. I will give you a call. Thought it would
be an impossible one to solve but there's now a little light at the end of the
tunnel.Looking forward to hearing how you and your kr are doing.Alan

KR> Re: Clearance between leg & foam/glass

2011-05-26 Thread smwood
I am donig the bottom of the inner wings. I have a trike undercarrage with
the legs on the rear of the front spar. Do I leave any clearance between the
leg & the foam/fibreglass, is there any flexing & if so how much clearance
do I leave. Or what have others done.
Mnay thanks
Robin.

Robin,
Dan Diehl told me several years ago that the movement of the gear leg at the
bottom of the wing skin would be several 0.001 inch and progressive bending
to several inches at the wheel end depending on the gross weight, hard
landing, bumps, etc. I am using the gear leg fairings at the bottom of the
wing skin; purchased these from Dan also. These fairings are glued to the
wing skin with RTV and sliding touch the gear leg. They flex with the gear
leg. The fairings close up the rough hole that the gear legs have at the
wing skin. I was not concerned about the clearance at the rough hole.
Clearance between the wing skin and gear leg is about 1/2-inch at the
closest point.

KR> wing tip slop follow up to points raised by forum members ...

2011-05-26 Thread Martin Pearce
Thank you everyone that has responded ...your input has spurred me on to a
deeper understanding of what is happening here ...

I have now had another professional engineer review the WAF joint with the
following conclusions drawn for 3/8 bolts

Assuming that the coefficient of friction between the two WAF surfaces is
0.8, the WAF joint will resist about 2.5G by friction alone for 600 KG AUW
aircraft (wing bolts tightened to 190 inch pounds of torque) and about 5.5G
in total when the shear strength of the 3/8 bolt is included. This assumes a
wing panel that has a centre of lift 1.0 meters outboard of the WAF bolt
holes (my wing is a little longer and has a centre of area about 1.05 meters
outboard, but then the wing twist reduces the lift towards the tip.) and the
calculated maximum G force is likely to be conservative as it is based upon
a bolt with a lower tensile strength than the AN bolts specified for our
WAFs. This G force limit of 5.5 G relates to an aircraft flying at 600 KG
AUW.

So, provided that

1. The necessary assembly clearances are taken up by lifting the tip to the
limit of its movement before tightening the bolts and

2. That -ve G manoeuvres of more than -2.5 G are avoided and

3. And that ground loads impose less than -2.5 G on the wing structure

Then there will be no movement of the WAF fittings during normal operation.

However, if any of these conditions are not met, or if the bolts are not
properly tightened, then the WAF blades will move one to the other causing
wear to the bolt holes and the bolts .

I am thinking of applying Loctite "wick in" to the WAF blades after assembly
to increase the friction and so improve my safety margins

Cheers

KR> wing tip slop ... the effect of marginally short bolts ...

2011-05-26 Thread Martin Pearce
I noticed that the both main spar and TE spar WAF bolts in my aircraft were
within recommendation (ie the thread was inside the WAF fitting) but this
meant that one end of the bolt had increased clearance in the WAF fitting
hole as the thread is a smaller diameter than the grip diameter of the bolt.
Today I purchased new bolts 1/8 inch longer, and yes, I will need an extra
washer or two, but the bolt is a MUCH neater fit in the hole than the old
one . gunna do a trial refit of the wing tomorrow wish me luck!

Hi folksIn the UK we have to have dual ignition and my HAPI 75 has just that.
Unfortunately one of the amplifiers does nt work on my as yet unflown KR2 but
it
runs fine on the single ignition. The electronic ignition system consist of: a
pair of senders from the old distributor hole, a pair of flattish black boxes
and 4 yellow coils, each with 2 HT outlets. By process of elimination I ve
found
that one of the black boxes - called the amplifier possibly? - that is weak.
There is no name on it but it must be about 1979. Can I get a new one, if so
where from? Should I replace the whole systems? If so with a beetle one?Any
thoughts would be greatly appreciated.Alan

KR> Tailwheel

2011-05-26 Thread Charles Brown
Hey Todd I am hoping to start on my KR 1 soon is their any way I could come up
and look at your KR as I am trying to get ideas of what I want to do. I think
my plans have been in the tube long enough about 35 years, they haven't even
yellowed they been in the dark so much or should I say so long, the tube was
covered with dust and cobwebs. Anyway getting late so will get off of here. God
bless. Charles.

What is "too flat" in a three point attitude?  My KR2S has the  original
retracts, and if I make no pitch change and allow it to accelerate it  will
fly right off the runway.  Although it is much easier to take off by  raising
the tail for a few seconds before allowing it to take off.
