I replaced mine with a 3 blade flight adjustable Bolly turning the other direction when I went to a psru gearbox. I still have my Warpdrive in case I go back to direct drive with 5th bearing. I was wondering if anybody is still using a 3 blade warp drive prop with a corvair engine? Possibly John Martindale? I have a 58" with factory modified tips that I might try to sale in favor of a fixed pitch wooden prop for weight. I will be installing one of the 5th bearing setups that are available with a factory nitrided crank. If someone is interested you can email me off list. Thanks for all the great info. KR> Fuel tank pick up and vent
Thank you for the information, It is a 32mm aerocarb, 12 gallon RR fuel tank, stock cid corvair, and the vent is a 5/16" aluminum tube under the fuselage about an inch bent into the air stream. Steven Bedford Kr2s

Welcome Barrett In reading your introduction I thought I was reading something I wrote. Your situation is very similar to mine and a few others here. KR> Diehl Wing skins
Hi Russ, I used Dan's skins on my KR2 some years ago and was fortunate in having met Dan at a gathering. I think I was the first to use them in the UK ,and had no problems except that the rib cut out markings didn't correspond somehow . I contacted Dan and he reassured me that my markings were not accurate ( it was in the '90's and I've forgotten how exactly-but I'll look up my notes if you can't get better advice). One thing I do remember is how fast vinylester goes off , so you have to get a reliable pal and rehearse the procedure. I also had to open inspection panels in the lower skins to satisfy our inspection authorities who would reinvent the wheel if it hadn't been made in Birmingham! Yes I am doing my RAF48 wings using the Diehl skins this winter. I am in NW MO. We can learn together unless my house sells then I am off to MD. Permanent like. Fw: KR> Fuel tank pick up and vent
Hey guys,Let me see if I convey this with some sort of reasoning. First history: I started out with aerocarb set up with a fuel pump and a regulator and ram air on a corvair. The fuel tank is vented from the very very top of the tank and sloped down hill behind the panel and out the side of the fuselage just in front of the wing about 7" up from the top of the wing on the passenger side. It is comprised of a 1/4" alum tube inside the tank and to the outside of the tank, the vent is then 1/4 " clear tubing to the side of the fuselage and then changes back to 1/4" alum. tube. The tube through the side is bent in somewhat of an crooked S shape so that it points straight into the slip stream of the fuselage. The open end faceing front is flared with the flaring tool that would normally be used to install the flared fittings for a AN-4 flared fitting. The fuel pump was removed in favor of gravity feed during first ground runs. The ram air was removed as problems showed up during taxi testing. The slight ram pressure that the vent tube picks up remains after 6 years and 660 hours. There is a fuel pressure sensor installed low in the system that reads to the tenth's of a pound. It never, even with as low as 2 gallons of fuel remaining, reads less than .9# at static. And around 1.4# in flight. I since added the fuel flow and installed it upstream of the pressure sensor. The pressures dropped but not to what i had calculated them to be. The static with low fuel is never below .8# and in flight now operates at 1.2# . The head height for pressure is 19" sitting level and certainly less in any climb. I do not have any back flow preventer installed and my opinion is something mechanical in a line that small is something that will get stuck. I got lucky and the pressures are centered around the published required pressures for the Aerocarb.Steven, I don't remember you saying what engine or what size carb, or header tank. The Aerocarb does work and I can not explain some of the problems that people have. Given that statement if i had more money 10 years ago I would have installed a ellison. My experinces with auto fuel and the Aerocarb are not good either.Joe HortonCoopersburg, Pa.-- Forwarded Message -- From: "John Martindale"To: "KRnet" kr...@mylist.net Subject: KR> Fuel tank pick up and vent List-Post: krnet@list.krnet.org Date: Mon, 21 Nov 2011 19:07:39 +1100 I've had no experience with Aerocarbs. I suspect it might given they are reputedly a calibrated "fuel leak" but I don't know. Guess it depends on the diameter of the vent and thus the amount of pressurisation. Someone else might chime in or you should contact the manufacturer for the definitive opinion. A simple vent in a cap will leak if upside in a prang. Use an aircraft designed one. I think these have some kind of a rubber flap arrangement that prevents this. Check out Aircraft Spruce. John I will be running a areocarb on a corvair engine and was wondering if running ram pressure into the vent of the header tank will cause a problem with this carb. KR> As I sit over here in AFG...
The 'what to do with the plane when I get home' project list keeps going through my head. I'm back to tri-gear-conversion with reversed stock mains as the 'first try' to make my plane a nose-dragger. The new plan (based on what I've read from here, better pictures of my plane, and a set of KR-1 (yes, 1... But the design is similar enough, IIRC, when it comes to the stock gear, for this to work) plans. I'm looking at using 2" blocks of wood as spacers to move the stick aft from it's 'stock' attachment point, creating an area behind the stick for the spring-bar, and bolting the gear into the 'down' position using brackets in place of the latch arms. Since the stock gear is bolted together, no cutting of exterior skin should be required (originally I was expecting to have to slice an access panel to get the gear out)... I'll have to re-route the aileron cable a bit, but I'd have to do that for Diehl gear anyway. I'll also have to re-route the brake lines (hydraulic heel brakes) and reverse the existing foam fairings to reduce the 'giant speed-brake' problem. If this works, I saved $1k, for the price of a little less elbow room (possibly addressable by bending of the control-stick tube into an 'S' shape, to move the handle back forward), and the plane will have a much more nose-high attitude while on the ground, than it would with the Diehl mains (the important part - prop-to-ground clearance, being determined by the nosewheel strut length, which will be the same for both configs) I'll also be able to do this with far less tools (important since I don't live in FL, and will be working out of a U-haul storage room) If it doesn't, I'll be out some time, and will buy the Diehl mains. I'm still using the Diehl nose wheel, for ease-of-install reasons over other options (such as fabing my own or trying to adapt one salvaged from a certified bird) With the gear flipped and the controls re-adjusted (moving the stick back will put some slack in the cables), I'll just have to install my e-bay scavenged EFIS and radios, change out the carbeurator (it's got a POSA now, I got an Ellison EFS2 off E-bay ($200, no less), and I see this as the other major 'issue' besides tail-dragger config), and touch up some paint... I've also been told to replace the points on the mag... 'Go time' for this project is the 2nd week of my mid-tour leave, in about a month. Nothing to get in the way, at all... P.S. One question: How much space is there typically between the back of the panel and the fuel tank (Assuming the plane was built to plans, without mods)

Thanks! I am hoping to do a "Round SA" trip first week in January 2012 so yes, I will be in PE soon if my plans work out, will let you know as planning progresses. The current engine setup in VYZ was developed over a period of time with many mods along the way and still a few I want to do but mostly small things now. My seats are molded (FG/Carbon) and are quite deep, that helps a lot if you are tall like me, at 6'3" my head is far from the canopy. I am going to have the seats recovered soon, I do not have any decent photos of them but I will make a point of taking some! Good luck with your project and keep us informed! Regards, Rudi
