KR> Sun-n-Fun
Returned from Sun-n-Fun today. Met with Pete Klapp there for lunch one day and a dinner in town on another day. Shirley and I went to the Thorp T-18 dinner; they had a great Low Country Shrimp Boil. Also managed to talk with three other KR builders. Met Dick Koehler of EAA Hints for Homebuilders fame. Dick had also built a KR-2. Made a nuisance of myself at the Dynon booth. Dynon had some great looking stuff, but the sales rep politely declined my request to move the displays to the sunlight coming in the door to see if it really does that. Wearing KR Gathering shirts is a great conversation starter, even when that person is not a KR builder. Did not see any KR aircraft on the flight line. Maybe next year I will have my KR-2 there. I just had to bring her out into the sun for the first time. Thanks to Dan's connection. I was able to get a per of main wheels and brakes. With a bunch of C clamps and vise grips I was able to roll her out. It 14' long with an extra bay and 3 extra inches fwd of the spar. After seeing Mark's KR-2 on Wednesday. This thing is big. I putting a 3000cc Corvair in the front so I should get off the ground. Sorry Mark about my last post. I thought it would fit. _20140406_172856 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!_ (h ttps://www.flickr.com/photos/ppauls_pics/13682860464/) Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618-406-4705 _Paul Visk - KR-2S Aircraft Builder's Log_ (http://www.mykitlog.com/PaulVisk/)
KR> Bob Lee's project
Hello, KR group, I am not a KR flyer at this time, but I presume you are talking about flyboybob.com.You can try, https://archive.org/web/ It is essentially an archive of websites. I did see it there, if you need a website built, I can get one of my guys on it at no cost of course. Just let me know if I can help. My regards to Bob and his family. I'm sure all KRnet members wish for the best possible outcome, and will keep him in their thoughts. Bob is a really great guy, and sharp builder. From what I remember, his work is awesome. Unfortunately, the website link doesn't work...it looks like his domain name has expired, and is now up for sale. There are vultures scouring the web for valuable domain names, and apparently it's already been snagged, and up for sale for $985. The link to his content has likely been deleted, but I've emailed Cheryl for help getting a copy of it off his server. Given that he had an Apache server (at home, I think) that he ran www.krgathering.org from, I'm sure the content or a backup still exists somewhere, and I hope she can find it. If not, I'll get some photos and post a link to them when I get them. I've had many conversations with Bob regarding the VW Type 4 engine (which is what he's using on his project). From those conversations, I can tell you Bob is a critical thinker and does things right. The engine is set up for fuel injection. Somebody will get a project that is very well done. If my link on KRnet is correct, it is a KR2. A few weeks ago Bob asked me if I'd take over the www.krgathering.org site, and I told him I would. I hadn't heard back from him, but now I know why. I'll fold that into www.krnet.org (to avoid having to pay for another domain), but would appreciate it if someone on the list could handle the registration part of it, if there are any software developer types on the list. Otherwise we can handle registration the old fashioned way...email. By the way, if something similar happens to me, my wife has agreed to keep www.krnet.org alive long enough for somebody else to take over. I pay the domain bill years in advance, just in case. KR> Bob Lee's project
Several folks have emailed me that www.krgathering.org is up, and yes, I knew that. The link I was referring to that no longer works is www.flyboybob.com which is the link to his plane and pictures that Cheryl alluded to, and is the link on www.krnet.org that would get there until recently. The www.flyboybob.com domain expired in January, and was snapped up by somebody that's now willing to sell it (without the content) for $985. Below is the text from Bob's main KR page, gleaned from an archive site (sans photos and links) from a snapshot made in 2013. It gives a pretty good idea of the KR project we're talking about. Read details below. I'm working with Cheryl to get the original content off of Bob's web server, which is independent of the domain name, is where the content of his website resides, and where the domain name used to point. I'll save it to www.krnet.org when I get the contents. Performance:To help provide input to the various design trade offs that must be made in the project I develop a spread sheet to project aircraft performance given the many designer choices associated with building your own aircraft. The first worksheet describes the other pages in detail. Basically there are tables of data that are used to calculate aircraft performance and from these tables aircraft performance graphs are plotted. You can take a look if you have excel by clicking on this link: acperfrm.xls Requirements:The mission and performance characteristics of N52BL set the following aircraft system requirements: Turbo-charging, oxygen, autopilot, cruise prop, 1800 NM range plus reserves, eleven hour endurance, food and water supply, over water safety gear, relief tube, redundant navigation equipment capable of searching for closest available landing site along the planned route., Day/night IFR capability, heater, cabin CO sensor. Description: N52BL is a plans built KR2 using a Great Plains 2600cc Type IV VW engine that I have inter-cooled and turbo-charged with a custom built AirResearch turbo-charger capable of sustaining rated power to FL250. N52BL uses the stock retractable landing gear in the tail-dragger configuration. The wing is built to plans dimensions except for substitution of the AS5046 airfoil section for it's improved cruise performance. A three axis electronically controlled trim system is employed that is integrated into an autopilot capable of heading and altitude hold with yaw damping. Flight Test: N52BL will have a formal flight test plan. That plan is currently under development. The draft plan is described in the Operational Documentation Manuals section under Flight Test. The flight test area is shown in sectional chart format as a twenty-five nautical mile radius from LZU, Gwinnet County, in Lawrenceville, GA. Objective: The objective of this project is to use my avocation for aviation to develop skills in managing extremely complex projects and balancing the difficult choices required to make progress in all areas of my life. Mission: The mission of N52BL is to set the single engine under 100HP record for a flight from Atlanta, Georgia, USA to Saint Thomas, USVI. This requires a range of 1755 sm. and an endurance of over 11 hours. Equipment List: The following list of equipment is mandated by the mission of N52BL: Autopilot, Turbocharged engine, Wing Tanks, IFR equipped, In Flight Adjustable Prop, Relief Tube, Three Axis Adjustable Trim. Oxygen, Over Water Emergency Equipment Performance: In order to develop the requirements for N52BL a spread sheet was designed that calculates performance across a wide range of airspeeds and altitudes. The spread sheet has a switch that determines if the engine is turbocharged or normally aspirated. The resulting data is graphed to provide: R/C, Angle of Climb, Power, Fuel Flow, Range, Glide Distance from Altitude, Lift over Drag, Endurance, Miles Per Gallon, Thrust Required vs Thrust Available vs Altitude, and a VN diagram. Download acperfrm.xls Design: N52BL is a plans built KR2 using the stock retract gear system, an AS5046 wing, and a Great Plains Aircraft Supply 2600cc VW type IV engine that is turbo-normalized. KR> Bob Lee & KR project for sell
Hello - My name is Cheryl Lee and I am writing on behalf on my husband Bob Lee. He is a fellow aircraft builder and is part of these mailing lists. Some of you have met him over the years at the KR Gatherings and he has handled the KR Gathering webiste up until this year. Late last fall Bob began not feeling to well. He had open heart surgery 2 years ago and thought something might be up with his heart. So he started seeing his cardiologist. He thought he was feeling some better but I didn't really see much improvement. In March I had to take him to the hospital and he was found to be anemic and dehydrated. They found out he had some ulcers that were bleeding in his stomach that was causing him to be anemic. While finding that out they saw something suspicious on his pancreas and liver. They brought in an oncologist and did a liver bioposy as they suspected cancer. They got his stable and sent us home and we were to get the results of the bioposy a week later. We never even suspected cancer. The day before we were to get the results from the liver bioposy Bob had a huge stroke in the left frontal lobe. This affected his memory, communication skills and processing skills. For 5 to 6 days he did not know who he was or any of his family. Then finally he started to recognize me and our 3 children. He has finally started to recognize other immediate family and a very few friends. He spent two weeks in the hospital trying to get his blood stabilized and start therapy. About 2 weeks ago we moved his to a rehab center to continue with PT, OT, and speech therapy. The communication going in still gets messed up. Sometimes he understands and others times he doesn't. He knows enough to tell you he doesn't understand you or know you. His speech going out has gotten better but he doesn't always express himself correctly. The memory has a long way to go. He doesn't read or write much as some of this has affect his vision as well. His balance and walking has greatly improved and he doesn't need a walker or cane. Late in the day he needs assistance as he gets tired. Hopefully he will be coming home this upcoming week and we will have in home therapy to continue his progress. I will be here with him and working with him as well as he can not drive. We have to master things like stairs in our house, taking care of his hygiene and even the simple things of putting clothes on correctly. He has come a long way and is doing better each day. He is heading in the right direction. We are working toward his recovery from the stroke and in the next two weeks will be getting a second opinion on cancer treatment. They have a Cancer Care Center in Newnan (an houraway from us) that we will be going to if they will take him. I am not sure due to the stroke if he remembers the possibility of having cancer. In my work, I am a contractor. I have no insurance. All our insurance is up under Bob right now. He will not be going back to work as a bus driver this fall and therfore his benefits will expire. I am looking to go back to work then so we will get benefits under me. Right now my main concern is to help him recover as much as possible from the stroke and start some cancer treatments. When all this came down my children and I were devasted. But since then we have pulled together and become strong for Bob with the help of our family, friends, and neighbors. The high school that our youngest son attends is dedicating a baseball game to him come next Friday night, April 11. They are taking donations on our behalf. Please visit the site of www.eteamz.com/lambertbaseball. The medical bills are coming in and with our wonderful Obamacare, we have our fair share to pay. Please donate to our cause so that I can stay home and take care of Bob to help him more forward in his recovery. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated no matter the amount. I do not think that Bob will ever finish his airplane much less fly it. I need to sell it as that will help with our medical expenses and mortgage payments as well. He has alot of information and pictures of his project on his website of www.flyboybob.com. Please go out and view it and pass it along to anyone who would be interested in buying his project. He has the body with retractable landing gear, Steve Bennett motor, Dan Diehl wing skins, and a nice insturment panel. I will have to look for the plans. I even have some tools that can be purchased as well if a buyer needs them to help finish the plane. I do not have a price yet as I need to talk with a few builders to find out what a fair price would be. We live Suwanee Georgia and will be glad to have anyone comelook at the project. Please feel free to respond to this email or you may contact me via my personal email of shortbus1017 at gmail.com or my cell number is 404-538-1434. I will be responding to all interested as Bob doesn't understand how to use a cell phone or his computer right
