KR> LANDING GEAR LEGS

2014-12-09 Thread Dan
Bill,

Sure have. Kept them at 1" thick. If you want I can send you the drawings
of the legs, photos and the bracket CAD. Email me at dprich01 at comcast.net .
As the plane sits right now with me in it there is about .5" deflection.
I'm not sure why folks wrap the legs in fiberglass. Grumman doesn't.

KR> build it light

2014-12-09 Thread joe.kr2s.builder at juno.com
Hello Guys land Dolls, As some of you already know I took over a project
from Eric Pitts over the summer. I think that I might be the fifth owner of
this project and there have been many changes from owner to owner. This is a
unique project that was started by Dr. Dean about 16 years ago now. So there is
no blame to be found here just observations on how a plane can weigh a ton (
not really an exaggeration). When I got it home I took every assembly and
cataloged and weighed them. I then started to evaluate how I wanted this plane
to turn out and then evaluated what weight reductions could be done. To be
very fair there are many very well built assemblies that I well use pretty much
as is. The first and largest was the fuselage on gear. (too many little
items included or not included for anyone to make a comparison) This weighed in
at 150#. I have removed a lot of epoxy runs and spills. The use of flox while
in the right places was 2 to 3 times what was needed for fillets and edge of
foam filling. Wood blocking from different configurations of systems was all
still in place, even though not used anymore. The result so far is a reduction
of nearly 10# from just this assembly. I still see another 3# in lightening
holes and a couple more things to remove. (Like tail wheel support) The seat
had a much smaller yield but still gains to be had. It started at 8.5# and with
just sanding extra flox out came down to 8# even. There are a couple
things that I am trying to share here in thinking about where you might be able
to build a part a bit lighter. One item is in blocking. If you are trying to
use a block of wood for a gusset or support and is is being used or glued on
two sides consider it being a triangular piece instead of a square piece. Half
the weight for free. In most cases just epoxy is enough on the surfaces that is
in contact. Flox fillets are likely over kill and just more weight. (Yes,
ounces add up to pounds) Also if it is a long blocking situation think if it is
needed full length or if one or several short pieces would do the same job.
Clean up extra epoxy runs and spill overs. Use peel ply as much as you can.
Again it does make a difference on ever part. Be careful of the edge depth that
is filled with flox on every part. I think the rule of thumb is a 1/4" and it
could be a triangular 1/4" if the edge is over 1/2" wide. If the edge is that
wide or more I might suggest that the flox edge still only be the 1/4"
triangular edge and and a layer of glass to cover the surface with peel ply to
take out the excess epoxy. Lightening holes are another very efficient
way to to save weight. I made two new mounting brackets for control stick
assembly out of aluminum angle. I was able to reduce the weight of each bracket
by exactly half with lightening holes with no loss of structural integrity. The
brackets weighed about 3 ounces each so basically I got 2 for one weight wise.
Not a lot but again ounces make pounds and I will not have another 700 plus
pound KR.Give your bird a free Christmas present by saving weight.
Remember you save fuel forever for every ounce that you don't need to drag into
the air. Think before you beef up a part that has served as is for 40 years of
KR's. Think if it really does need to be thicker. Think if it needs to be steel
instead of aluminum. Think if it really needs another layer of glass. Think if
you really need heavy electric motors instead of light flap or trim hand
operated. Look at every part you make and wonder if it is the lightest way that
it can be completed. All my best,Joe Horton

KR> Project for sale.

2014-12-09 Thread Aaron

Tried this a couple weeks ago and it didn't get through to the list. I have a
KR2 project to get rid of. Late 90 serial number and 300 to 400 hours of work
done. I have almost everything, including the semi-retract gear and a full
fiberglass kit. Missing only the hardware kit and the epoxy. I needed the hapi
engine for my project but the seller wouldn't separate. Lots of pics available.
Project is in West Plains,Mo. Will consider any reasonable offer to get it out
of my shop.

KR> Looking for Plans and a Person

2014-12-09 Thread Richard Kaczmarek
Hey Mark,

My interest and goal would be to handle everything from parts production to
having the plans made so that Jeannette wouldn't have to do anything just
cash a check. We can take any type of payment now and would build an
inventory to help cut lead times to days not weeks or months. The KR is a
fun little bird and I am working on an interesting one now with hopes to
have it back up and flying by spring. I will be posting progress reports on
Facebook as we get deeper into it.

KR> Looking for Plans and a Person

2014-12-09 Thread Mark Langford
Several folks have volunteered to facilitate the sale of the plans, and to
be fair, my impression is that Steve isn't the reason that plans are
difficult to get. After all, the plans are still controlled by Jeanneatte
Rand. I'm not sure if she's out of the country, in the hospital, or just
not paying attention, but she needs to realize that if plans become
impossible to obtain, and we may be there now, they will eventually be black
marketed on the internet and that cash cow will be dead. Truth is...the KR1
plans are already "free" on the internet, posted by a guy that got fed up
waiting on plans back in 2009when he finally got them, he posted them as
a bit torrent, if you don't mind getting a load of malware with your free
plans. I've also heard of them available on ebay.

We all want to do the right thing with plans, which is pay the rightful
owner for them and sleep well at night, but they have to be legally and
morally OBTAINABLE somehow! If there's anybody out there that has Mrs.
Rand's ear, it would be good to persuade her to do something about plans
availability, and soon, before the plans become freely available and people
can say rightfully say "I simply couldn't get them any other way". I don't
care who sells them, but they need to be available in a timely manner from
somebody that takes credit card orders, has a bunch of plans sets ready to
go, and will ship them within a day or so. Anything else leads to problems,
as those of us on this list well know. This has been going on too long...

KR> Engine Shipping

2014-12-09 Thread Richard Kaczmarek
Last few engines I have shipped were done with Uship they bid on the
shipment and you are only required to place it on a pallet and tie it down.
Last one I shipped was an 0-300 from Ohio to Nevada and cost me $120 that
was just before Thanksgiving.

KR> Looking for Plans and a Person

2014-12-09 Thread Richard Kaczmarek
I have sent Steve an email about the ability of my company taking over the
production of parts and support of the KR, but have not heard back from him
as of yet. My proposal as the plans go would be to continue to produce them
with a proper s/n and place what would normally be paid out to the rights
holder in a separate account to be paid when the holder would come back
forward. This is what is currently done with The Fly Baby. I would not want
to get in a legal fight over rights ownership. By holding funds that way
the rights holder would be properly compensated.
