KR> 2015 KR Gathering @ McMinnville Web Pages Are Up

2015-06-15 Thread John Bouyea
The prior KR Gathering web site isn't available any more. I volunteered to
get something running. You'll notice what we have again is the web site
that Bob Lee created and Sheryl passed to Mark Langford. Until Mark gets the
KRNet.org link repointed, you can see the 2015 KR Gathering @ MMV pages
here; http://bouyea.net/KRGathering

I have most of the 2015 Gathering web pages ready;

. The Home, Airport Info, Lodging, Schedule, Contacts & Cash Flow
pages are updated

. The Prior Gathering photos are available again. Thanks to those
that said they were having a problem. It was on this end.

. Marc Bacca & Greg Skidgel sent photos from 2014 and I'll build a
photo page for Chino that is missing in action. Thanks guys!

. Steve Glover said he'd get to the Cash Flow numbers soon

Please note: we lost our current list of attendees. As soon as I get the
Registration page working (hopefully tomorrow) I'll let you know you can
sign up again. Sorry about that. Going forward I'll update the roster at
least weekly.

If you have any constructive comments, please address them to me at
kr2s at bouyea.net Thanks for your patience guys!

KR> Secondary plugs

2015-06-15 Thread Nerobro
They do break down on car and bike leads. Most people just don't care
enough, or operate the engine in ways that they'd pinpoint the problem to
being degrading insulation on spark plug leads.

Mike, why not use same leads on the airplane?

KR> Secondary plugs

2015-06-15 Thread gluejam
All ignition wire insulation breaks down over time, and if yours are not
shielded wires, it becomes visible in total darkness when
the engine is running.

If you have a car or truck with a few years or many miles, take a look
some dark night. You may be surprised at what you can
see happening. Yes, it also happens with motorcycles , but usually
their secondary ignition wires are not as close to a ground
so is not that apparent other than performance degradation or poor
spark. They also have metal core wires more often than
resistance types, the latter which can also develop gaps in the
conductor over time in any installation.

Years ago, the worst case I ever saw was a friend's Olds 98 which he
said "just wasn't running right" on a trip to SFO. I raised
the hood while it was running one night in his carport, and it looked
like the 4th of July, crossfiring and firing to ground everywhere.
A new set of ignition wires cured all his problems.

I agree that combining resistance wire with resistor plugs is a bad idea.

I ordered my plans in early Feb. , Emailed nvaero about the status last week,
got a prompt reply which indicated the plans should be shipping out
soonrobert?

cancel the order.? Anyways, sounds like my wait is almost over.

KR> Secondary plugs

2015-06-15 Thread laser147 at juno.com
Steve was using 10mm long-reach Champion G59C plugs for the secondary
ignition when I got my plane from him. I've done a lot of research on
plugs - both for the secondary system and for the mag - back when I was
going through the engine and systems completely - and decided to stick
with the G59C plugs because they are a bit on the cold side and are
non-resistor plugs. Adding resistor plugs to resistor leads, perhaps
with resistor spark plug caps, is way over-burdening the coils. To
prevent RF interference one should use resistor leads or resistor plugs,
but not both. Or you can do it and reduce the efficiency and life of the
coils.

I've recently revisted this subject while researching new leads for my
Dyna coils that came with my engine from Steve Bennett. My current leads
that came with the plane are red 8mm Taylor leads that look and test fine
but I'm going to put new leads on anyway once I decide which ones I want.
I wrote Great Plains about availability of theirs and to see what they
are selling, also to order a new mag puck. So far no response but it was
only a couple days ago that I wrote. I miss being able to call Linda or
Steve. They always answered the phone.

I think my coils are getting a little weak with time so putting some new
leads ought to help. The miss I've been experiencing with the secondary
system on the right rear cylinder was corrected by reducing the gap on
the plug - which means my coils are getting weak, or the leads are arcing
since they also have some years on them. I'm reading the insulation
breaks down over time . . . but that doesn't seem to happen with car
leads or my bike leads and they get a lot more use . . . so I don't know.
Putting some new 10 mm Taylor leads on can't hurt. Waiting to hear what
GP is selling for their secondary systems these days.

I've been reading some performance forums lately (motorcycle primarily)
and apparently NGK and especially Bosch are considered to be junk by the
guys whose lives revolve around these subjects. They seen to generally
love ND - Nissan Denso, which is what I chose for my magneto plugs a long
time ago based on research I did then. W27ES-V fine wire plugs. Took a
bit of looking to find them. They've been great and so have the Champion
G59C plugs on the secondary. The miss on the one cylinder lately is not
the fault of the plug.

KR> broken head stud

Had one break on the way to Red Oak,Iowa.Cylinder temp went up and was
unable to make the gathering but the plane made it home ok.checked the head
nuts and sure enough,a stud broke.Only time it has happened.Tommy W.
