2015-10-06 Thread Luis Claudio
Checked on ...hooters, twin peaks and "Bombones" for the Latino flavor
flyers...all well within a short driving distance. Airport has a good
assortment of courtesy cars. Dangit forgot to check on other aviation
concerns...will get back to you guys on that later.

For goodness sakes Dan, this is Dallas! All those things and more are there in
abundance, especially horsey rides. I would enjoy the Dallas area, especially
if the Gathering is held around now, or even later in October than now. With
climate changing, Gathering dates need to be moved more into the fall months if
we're going to get together anywhere in or near the southwest part of the U.S.
Today, October 6th, it's 82? in Dallas. For me, 82? is right on the edge. My
idea of perfect temperatures are what we had at MMV. The first week of
September is clearly the ideal time of year for McMinnville but first week of
September in Dallas is a hellhole. Not as bad as Chino was, but still - with
that Gulf humidity anything above 80 is going to have us running for the air
conditioners. I'd enjoy Dallas but not if its a sweatbox. Time of year needs
to be considered in conjunction with location. Mt. Vernon has always been
extraordinarily nice but Gatherings were held mid to late
September when I've been there. As we consider changes in location my
suggestion is that time of year needs to be given equal consideration.
There is no reason to suffer when we have the entire country to choose from.

I would also mention that having hangar space for our planes is of no
concern to me. I carry tie down ropes and packing tape to seal the
canopy gaps. Naturally I don't leave my plane outside when I'm home but for
the few days of a Gathering it doesn't hurt it a bit to sit outside, even in
rain as at MMV. Why is hangar space considered to be an issue?
Really . . . I'm not being snarky. I don't see the "what for" of it. In the
middle of winter with snow, ice and cold well then sure, a hangar is nice.
Otherwise . . .?

Some key features for KHQZ Mesquite Metro:
Non-FAA control tower with very professional controllers
Large modern aviation facilities without a lot of commercial traffic
Sits under Bravo airspace with plenty of sky above so that Bravo is not a big
factor
Cheapest fuel cost in the Dallas-Ft Worth Metro Area
Large parking for GA aircraft
An avid aviation homebuilt community
Great sightseeing side trips especially to several aviation museums nearby

Just naming a few things to do while in Texas.

I am new to the list and still in the dream stage of building a KR2 since I
just sold my Cherokee. I would like to propose KHQZ Mesquite Texas. If there is
enough interest I will volunteer to see what it will take.
Just a suggestion to the group. Blue skies to all

KRnetHeads,

Some folks have voiced the concern that despite several invitations over
the last few months, and the opportunity to volunteer at the recent
Gathering, perhaps we should give those people who might want to
volunteer to host the 2016 Gathering yet another chance to volunteer.

So, I propose that if you want to volunteer to host the 2016 KR
Gathering anywhere other than MVN (Mount Vernon, IL), that you do so
before the end of October. This is intended to give a prospective host
enough time to get their ducks lined up...line up an airport, get the
airport staff on board, check to see if you're going to need a million
dollar insurance policy, etc, and run it by the KR Community, which I'd
argue is defined by the folks on this email list.

I'll be surprised if anybody steps up to the plate, especially since
Larry Flesner has already volunteered to facilitate the next Gathering
at MVN, with help from others. But we're trying to err on the side of
absolute, undeniable, inarguable opportunity.

Having said this, I also think that 2017 needs to be held somewhere
other than MVN, or we'll get in another rut of going to the same old
place year after year, but we'll cross that bridge when we get a little
closer.

No comments on KRnet are required, unless you are throwing your hat in
the ring with some details on your plans to host the 2016 Gathering
somewhere other than MVN...

Thanks,

--
