Purchase a hand full of nylon bolts the size of the anchor nuts (#8
or #10) and thread them into the anchor nuts to keep there resin
out. When cured, remove the nylon bolts. I used that process in
several places while building. If using wax, I'd try heating the wax
a bit to soften but not so hot as to soften the resin on the back
side. Run the reamer through the warm wax to remove. If you break
one of the nylon bolt it should be easy to drill out with an undersized bit.

As always, your results may vary..

KR> Anchor Nuts for Aileron Hinges

2016-01-02 Thread Sid Wood
Matt,
I used a rubber insert on the anchor stop nuts to keep the resin out of the
threads. These do an excellent job. The same insert holds the stop nut in
place while the resin cures. After the resin cures, pull the insert out for
a clean installation. Theoretically you throw away the rubber inserts after
one use. The anchor nuts are purchased with the inserts already in place.
(They are pricey.) The inserts are quite durable and reusable many times.
I have re-used the inserts on standard anchor nuts from AC Spruce fifty
times at least. The inserts I have are for 10-32 anchor nuts. I got them
from the trash can at Abaris Training. These can be seen at
http://www.clickbond.com/modules.php?name=Products2=category_view=9

On all my anchor nut installations on spruce and plywood, I drill a hole at
each rivet hole into the wood at the anchor ear. I insert a rivet into the
hole along with the epoxy resin. The resin keeps the rivets in place and
the rivets keeps the anchor nut from spinning when the screw or bolt is
torqued.

Hello Matt,
 I used a 1-1/16" wide 6' hinge p/n MS20257p2-6 Aircraft Spruce has
them. You're supposed to use stop nuts on the back of the spar but good
luck keeping resin out of them.

KR> Aileron spar

Haven't got there yet but I like this solution from the PIK-26, an angle
bolted to the aft spar & piano hinge riveted or bolted to that:

You can rivet the anchor nuts to the back of the spar.

You're supposed to use stop nuts on the back of the spar but good luck keeping
resin out of them.

I had a few nuts get blocked with resin and flox after attaching the aileron
spar to the wing. After the resin set I used a 3/32" drill bit to cut through
the bulk of the overfill then used a tap to clean out the threads. Minimal
amount of effort.

As far as keeping resin out of locknut or nutplate threads while you're
glassing, you can stand them up in a row on some waxed paper and melt canning
paraffin or candle wax into the threaded parts before you install them. Resin
will not stick to wax. After they are in place and the resin is hard you can
auger the wax out with a dental pick or just screw the fastener in and it will
push the wax out the back, if the back is open.
Be careful with wax though. The thing that makes it so good for keeping resin
out, will also doom you from ever getting good adhesion when you are trying to
get a good solid resin joint or glassing over something.

Hello all, I?ve got two questions. First, what size piano hinge is used for the
ailerons? Second, how are they attached to the false spars? I?m looking at
countersunk bolts into captive nuts flexed onto the back of the spars, but my
1979 version of the plans doesn?t say anything on the subject. How did some of
you who have finished your projects attach these?
