I made my with 3/32 birch. I followed ?Mark Langford's design and mine is as stiff as a-well you know-.?I was going to cut my holes ?after I did my flight testing.?We've had some pretty intense discussions on holes or no holes. ?So I was going to do both and document the difference. Start with no holes and then add the holes. ?I personally believe the holders are more efficient. ?Maybe we get a few of us doing that so we can figure that out. ?Holes are no holes and finally put it to rest. KR> Carbon Fiber
>l. I want to use carbon fiber to build the belly board for my KR2. ++ I just finished my state and federal income taxes so this is an easy question. I used 1/4 inch foam for a very similar sized board with one layer of KR glass on each side and 1" holes in the board . http://myplace.frontier.com/~flesner/19.jpg The hinge is epoxied to the board (many 1/8" holes in the hinge with a strip of glass over the hinge) with 5 each 3/16" bolts holding the hinge to the fuselage. A piece of cheap 1/4" pine glued to the inside of the fuselage where the bolts penetrate. I added a foam wedge (glassed)for an air ramp just forward of the hinge. A single jack screw extends the board to near 90 degrees and it has survived in airspeeds of 110+ MPH. Larry Flesner

Jeff,Don't need to tell you but I just rebuilt a generator and the parts are not cheap.Still cheaper than a STC and new equipment on a 50 year old airplane.Tommy W. KR> Starter replacement
? ? Sent:?Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 6:35 PM From:?"Robert Pesak via KRnet" To:?krnet at list.krnet.org Cc:?"Robert Pesak" Subject:?KR> Starter replacement I have replaced my starter on my engine with only 74 hours. The clutch Drive Unit started to go bad I didn't want to take any chances and what they wanted for the rebuild that unit I bought a new skytec starter. The reason I went with a skytech is just what Jeff had mentioned I didn't want to go through the trouble of plugging that barring hole with the skytec starter you don't have ?to plug the bearing hole. -- Just as a point of clarification, the old key start type starters had a bearing mounted inside the case that had to be removed to install most other starter replacements. Sometimes in the process of pulling that bearing, the bearing needles can escape. I've seen the needle get sucked up into the oil pump and trash the accessory case. Skytech has a starter model that has a nose piece that fits into the bearing, so you don't have to remove it. The even older Delco starters (like I had), identified by the pull cable to engage the starter has the starter pinion gear riding on a shaft that is clamped between the two case halves. To install any other type of replacement starter, you have to go into the back of the accessory case with a die grinder and cut off the 1/2" steel pinion shaft. It throws a lot of abrasive contaminants and metal throughout the accessory case in the process, so it takes a lot of careful cleaning before you decide to fill the sump with oil and fire it up again. The screen and filter will capture the contaminants, but the oil pump is susceptible to damage if it ingests this stuff. -Jeff Scott Los Alamos, NM
KR> Today's Flight
Hi everyone,I haven't given any performance report on N863RK for quite some time. First of all I can't understand why I didn't build one twenty years ago, I'm taking some long cross country flights trying to get a good read on everything. My best?cruse speed is at 145 MPH?burning around?6.4 ?-?7.0 ?GPH , I think once I get my wheel pants installed I might another five miles per hour. As of now I put 82.1 hours on the hobbs and nothing has fallen off in flight. I'm really happy I stretched the fuselage forward and?aft plenty of leg room?and it handles great.?Today I took off from M54?runway 1?winds were 280 @8 gusting 14 this one?of the?things I love about this bird cross winds?are no?a problem, I've done landings with 19 knts cross winds feeling comfortable. Last week I loaded?160 lb. in the right seat and filed the fuel tanks with 23.5 gal. with me @ 215lb I was @ I was 1363.23 gross with no handling issues.Hope to see everyone at the gathering.? Temps were at 39 degrees F and the winds were 10 mph almost straight down runway 30. After climbing to 7000? and on top of scattered cumulus clouds I just relaxed and let all the stress of the last two weeks go away. You see, I sold my home (close tomorrow) and have been packing and storing everything we own for our big move to Clearwater, Florida. The only sad part about moving is that we have to wait till school is out. We can not wait to become Floridians!!! Does anyone in the Tampa area know of any hangers for rent preferably private but I at this point I will take anything I can get.?
