The fuel shutoff valves, tee, and pumps are all located under the
cover on the forward face of the spar. Backup battery switches
located on the red panel on bottom edge of instrument panel. Use
once and it saved my bacon when I lost my main electrical buss.

Stefan,
Yes, the requirements are the same in Canada for nav and strobe lights .(page
607 of the AC Spruce 2015 catalog I have)
Check Transport Canada documents under Chapter 549.
I have 2 strobes , one under the belly and one on top of the turtle deck, which
is one of the approved scenarios. Whelen strobes are what I use.

You can go into an unusual in a 172 if you're not careful! GPS has
definately made flight planning easier and safer. Just have a paper one
handy following and comparing the two.

Without at least a wing leveler, that's sure true. It's even worse with
the KR-1 cockpit. I used paper back in the 80's with my first KR so
clearly everyone did it. I recall getting very creative with folds

It is much easier to use approved equipment but in the US getting something
allowed is less of a headache on homebuilts. Also after the initial
inspection you can add equipment as the mechanic and sign it off within
reason.

KR> LED Strobe lights

2016-08-16 Thread S

Thanks guys for your comments and suggestions ! I will ask builders from my EAA
chapter about the experience with local authorities regarding the
anti-collision strobes.
After a search on electronic components resellers web sites, I am more or less
tempted to buy an extra-bright 12V white LED bar and embed it on top of the
fin/rudder, under a transparent layer of glass fiber. The flasher electronics
itself is not a big deal using off-the-shelf components. For now, I consider
placing some light corrugated pipe with a pull tape inside in the volume of the
rudder, so the wiring later will be easy.

Last weekend I had my first flight review in 24 years. My instructor was a
friend from my EAA chapter. He wanted me to plan a 100 mile XC.

So I did. All on my Avare GPS app, E6B app and my weather app. I thought I did
a good job. Well he didn't like it. He wanted me to do it the old way. With
a sectional, a plotter and a wiswheel and a phone call to flight service for a
weather briefing. And god forbid if I opened my GPS in flight.

After he signed my log book. We talked about it. He said the most pilots still
plan on paper and use paper sectionals in flight.

My question to you KR pilots is how do you plan XC's? Do you use programs, Apps
like foreflight and others or a combination of both. or do you just use paper?
Just curious.

KR> Cross country planning and a KR

2016-08-16 Thread Jeff Scott

I have to second what DJ and Doran said.? I don't remember the last time I
planned on paper.? If I am planning a significant cross country flight (meaning
half the continenent or more), I'll keep an eye on the weather forecast via
ADDS Weather, then do my preflight planning on Skyvector.? Anymore, I just
print out the NavLog from Skyvector, and that's my flight plan.? Printing out
the SkyVector NavLog is as close as I get to using paper.? I pick up a
nationwide weather snapshot and current and forecast winds aloft overlaid on
the Sectionals or clean screen (vector mode) on the iFly on my Android, and get
ADS-B updates on both the Android iFly and my iFly GPS en route.?
?
35 years ago I flew a non-electric open cockpit Biplane coast to coast (SC to
WA).? It was a lot more fun, but modern navigation has made flying so much
easier.? No more circling water towers to figure out what town I'm near.? No
more jumping out of the cockpit and looking at the phone book at the pay phone
to see where I actually landed.? Things are much different now days.

KR> anti-glare screen film - ebay and Paypal

2016-08-16 Thread Mark Langford
If you're looking for an anti-glare screen film for whatever you have on
your panel that's too glossy, this deal is hard to beat. By buying
three "iPad2" anti glare screen protectors for $5, free shipping, you
can anti-glare a lot of equipment. I used one for my old iPad2, cut
another in half to make two iFly 720 films, and have one left over for
whatever needs it next. On iPad and 720, it eliminated ALL real glare,
with no discernible impact on brightness. On the contrary, it looks a
lot more brilliant without all the extraneous reflections. I highly
recommend these.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/230909939563?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

is the link, and they seem to have plenty of them.

For those who haven't discovered ebay, you don't know what you're
missing. It's a great system that is "self-governing", based on buyer
and seller reviews which keep people straight. It's a great place to
buy just about everything for a very low price, and almost anything you
can think of. Ebay is not a "personal information giveaway"
either...there's a lot of protection built into the system, and I've
never had a problem with it. Same goes for Paypal, which is a great way
to buy things online without spreading your personal information and
credit card numbers all over the globe. Ebay is a tool that every
scrounger should have in his toolbox...
