On the plus side that would eliminate the need for brakes.? And with
roller skates you could eliminate the need for landing gear also.

KR> Wings Dings and Things!

2014-09-15 Thread Carl Dow
Both are correct, one controls the "quality" of the lift e.g. Bernoulli, and
the other is just plain lift from angle of incidence. The both work together
in an infinite amount of variations. Heck one can work without the other. The
"quality"/"stability" will be less than desirable for sure.

Many years ago I did a lot of research on, lift, drag & aerodynamics in general
trying to figure out what good cool stuff to do to a airplane design. I've
always been interested in fast, cheap to fly efficient airplanes. I looked into
the lift thing, boy oh boy are there differing opinions on that subject! The
two theories most aerodynamists believed before and at the time was as most of
us have heard. Below theory #1 & #2
1: Wings are flat on the bottom, curved or rounded on top. The theory is as the
air molecules are separated at the leading edge the bottom of wing molecules
just lolly gag sauntering along with no worries at all heading for the trailing
edge of the wing, right?
The molecules that headed over the top of the wing are really different from
the lazy bottom molecules. The top molecules have to be the serious workers
racing really fast over the longer distance curved top of the wing so they can
meet back up with their buddy molecules they used to be next to before they
took the easy, lazy short route across the bottom of the wing. Because the top
speedy molecules are racing faster they create a vacuum or LIFT!!
This theory number one is what we've all heard of course.
I've wondered then and since, if this is true then a guy flying upside down
(many have and do) is getting lifted or sucked towards the ground right!
I've thought what about the guy flying a pure symmetrical wing, heck he's
getting equally sucked up and down. That poor wing has to decide if it likes
being high or on the ground ! I'm surprised the pilot can make his symmetrical
wing obey and take him skyward!

2. Some believe that the downward force of air off of the trailing edge of the
wing creates the lifting force. They say the molecules on top racing to meet
back up with their bottom buddy molecules is the most ignorant thing they've
ever heard.
If you look at a Dr Whittcomb (sp) GAW2 (I think that stood for General
Aviation Wing # 2 of the series.) I know he had a 1 and 2 but I'm not sure if
he went further or not with the series. Anyone is welcome to correct me you
won't hurt my feelings too bad!
When you look at the #2 airfoil you will see the bottom near the trailing edge
curves upward but then back downward at the trailing edge. The top line where
it meets the bottom is below the chord line not on the chord line. It looks as
though Dr Whittcomb had the downward thrust of air creates the lift theory
going here. I think the Glassair aircraft used this airfoil but could have been
the GAW 1, I don't remember for sure now.

It's possible that the belly boards on planes KRs especially in this
conversation are throwing, pushing, forcing air downward which is creating
additional lift then the turbulence is creating drag and a vacuum on the back
side of the belly board to help slow the plane while lifting it a little.

This is my theory and I'm sticking to it tonight. I may have a new theory
tomorrow!!LOL

I was thinking the same way when I built my KR. ?I flew it 500 hrs with no
flaps, belly board, or any other deployable drag. ?What I found over the years
is that as I kept improving the plane with incremental drag reductions, the
plane was getting more difficult to land. ?I was spending too much time over
the runway transitioning from flying to rolling. ?At 500 hours, I did some
major renovations to the plane to include a
significantly larger tail and the addition of flaps. ?To me, it was shocking as
to how much easier this plane is to land with some kind of deployable drag. ?I
have put another 500 hours on the plane since I added the flaps and have
continued with my drag reduction improvements. ?It is really rare that I ever
land this plane without flaps now that they are on there.

I don't think there was much question that I could fly the plane well in it's
original configuration. ?(OK, some of you may think I suck as a pilot :o) ?What
I discovered after adding flaps and a larger tail is that the plane was much
easier to land. ?By making it easier to land, I found that I was much more
comfortable landing the plane in more challenging wind conditions. ?Since I
could land under more challenging conditions, I was flying the plane a lot more
and was very comfortable flying off to other places without having to worry
about changing wind conditions at my destination airport or the often times
challenging wind conditions getting back into my one way in, one way out, 7000'
high on a mesa home airport. ?Adding flaps and a larger tail to my plane simply
made my plane so I could use it a more.

2011-10-13 Thread Carl Dow
Brian,
I have yet to start building.  I am an avid reader of the posts on this site.
They are priceless for someone like us.  I truly appreciate the intelligence,
candor, technical brilliance, and just plain good ideas I see here.  The
people on this site are providing everyone a chance to learn from their
mistakes, research, and experience.  The reason these kind folks are wanting
posts to stay on subject is for further research.  If rules aren't followed
then all this excellent information is extremely time consuming to find again.
It turns into a guessing game of where to look for the information because it
is not under the SUBJECT that it pertains to.  No one is being picky or hard on
you.  It is for the good of all the builders and the Site.  This type of
structure is conducive to easy research and a professional approach to
building.  Our lives are on the line, if attention to detail is not paid to
posting, it will carry over to your
building.  Crossing your T's and dotting you I's and staying on subject are
just a part of it.  Those are the rules.  Be a good guy and set pride aside.  I
don't know any of these people but I think these people are on your side.

Kind Regards,

I visited Roy while he was building. He told me a lot about the project. It
was shoehorned into his garage next to his wife's Alfa Romeo. His son was
(is) an aeronautical designer. They changed the airfoil to something close
to what was on the P51 he drove in the military. Roy told me they expected
the stall speed to increase quite a bit. He wasn't too concerned about it; a
sure sign of his confidence in his piloting skills. I recall his workmanship
approaching an art form.

I took several rolls of film that day; I have the paper photos around here
somewhere. If I recover those, it would be fun to scan and post them for the
group to see.

I flew up to Santa Maria last fall to do a prop balance job and was told
by Paul Lipps that Roy still comes out to the occasional EAA meeting and
other aviation get-togethers in that area.  His plane had a new Revmaster
turbo when it was sold three or four years ago.  Somebody in Oregon
restored it and had it for sale . . . I remember talking to the person on
the phone.  Time flies . . . it may have been longer ago than that.   The
