Maybe this is old news, but i stumbled a cross a mdodel
 a  KR-2S ?

Ebay item 120058142248

Copy on the ebay item read:
RAND ROBINSON KR-2On June 1, 1974, the KR-2, a two seat version emerged into
the world of experimental aviation with its maiden flight. The prototype KR-2,
N4KR, was powered by an 1834cc Revmaster, which is an otherwise stock 1600cc VW
with 99mm cylinders. This particular engine was a single ignition version and
used a Bendix mag and a Posa carburetor. Revmaster gives the engine a
continuous rating of 60 hp at 3000 rpms, which is on the conservative side. Ken
Rand, the designer/builder, obtained cruise speeds of 180mph at 3200 rpm and
airspeeds of 200mph at higher altitudes.

I think the flood of mal-ware emails is plugging up the email system. I
nolonger open any "bounced" return to sender email. I think that they are
hacker / spyware originated. Here is why.

For several weeks, I have been flooded with junk emails being sent,
identified as if I had sent them originally, and that they are being rejected,
bounced, returned etc. Sometimes it appears I get more of those than real
email. What I think is happening is that hackers are sending out fake
-bounced- emails trying to get us to open them, and to open a back door into
our computers. Norton anti-virus says that my computer is clean, but who
knows.

What started out as a trickle has become a torrent, so the stragedgy is
working. I know that opening the a nasty email attachment can open hacker-
backdoors into my computer. Opening some email with mal-ware html do that
also. Good luck to us all.

RR / Jeannet will need to have her lawyer send that guy and ebay letters if she
wants to defend her copywrite. Maybe she hasn't extended her copywrite claims
and so it becomes public domain? Else if the cd guy is 'just' offering
scanned 'original' 30 plus year-old version of the KR2

Practically speaking, it would probably be smarter / cheaper to get a full
set of current version plans.

Last year, just for reference, I bought cd plans for VP-1 and Sonerai on
ebay. To really do anything with them, I think that I would probably need to
take them to kinkos or some company that prints stuff out on big paper. Even
at small scale, they would eat up a lot of paper.

but It is up to RR to get their finger out and stick genuine sets of plans
on CD and make them available via ebay or any other means. Mark Langford
has probably helped sell hundred's of sets of plans - far, far more than
RR have sold !

Perhaps it's up to one of you boys with the correct background to help
her out by offering to scan plans etc.

I really don't think that snarling at someone who makes a few bucks out
of spotting a market will actually sell a single set of genuine plans.
If RR were to get together with Mark, and put a set of plans + all the
good construction stuff on a CD it could be sold for $10 and would sell
in the tens of thousands.

Most of the cars that I see driving down the road have a single person in them.
My goal now, is my plans built version of the kr2 will fly with me,
sometimes with a grand kid. I see the KR2 as bascially a sport motorcycle of
the air.

At age 54, my blood pressure and heart are still ok, but the blood pressure
seems to climb a bit higher each year. If I drink an extra cup of coffee, or
test at the end of a stressful day, then I get a reading where the MD would
suggest blood pressure meds. My best guess that if I want to be flying 10
years from now, that, I will want an airplane that I can still fly using just
my DL rather than worrying about failing a pilot medical.

My KR2 wings are done, but now, I am thinking of making another set that are
several feet longer. Reading on the thread making KR2 ELSA.. What would be
so wrong to talk with the inspector. This one started out to be a KR2 but
ended up with some mods. I think that some of the KR2s, expecially Mark
Langerford's is best described as a Super KR2S . Mark could have called his a
ML -2 , as he has pretty much evolved it by lengthening and widening it into
a new airplane using a different powerplant / airfoil.

I just did a google search for the powered glider verson of the kr1.

When Ken Rand build his 1972 version of the KR-1, didn't he basically built
a composite version of the wood and fabric ? English VW powered Taylor plain?

It is a KR if you:
stretch it 14 inches,
make it 6 inches wider,
make the sides vertical,
build it 200+ pounds over plans gross wt.,
use a different airfoil,
install an O235,
change the horizontal airfoil,
use Dr. Dean Hinges,
build it with sliding or forward tilt canopy,
use Fowler flaps,
make the fuselage a foam/fiberglass sandwich,
make folding wings. (are these changes all made by "designers?")
It is not a KR if you:
build it light and to the plans except for adding slightly more wing area
or make it a single place to give it a stall speed of 51mph instead of
the Rand Robinson published stall speed of 52mph.one little mph,
have it cruise at about 135mph.(and there are a lot of KR's flying
that do not exceed the LSA cruise speed specs.)

Please don't try to stifle those who are discussing how to lower the
stall speed. By the way I did not get to vote on the following-- "It
has been agreed upon here that an ELSA legal KR 1 or 2 would not remotely
be a KR anymore"
We are not talking about an ELSA anyway--we are talking about an Amateur
Built Experimental KR that is legal for a Sport Pilot to fly. The LSA's
category planes are factory built or built from an approved factory kit.

If you took a poll of the Netters you would probably find that relatively
few have finished and flown a KR or any other homebuilt. We do look up
to those of you who have.

2008-10-12 Thread Dann Johnson
Netters,

My KR2 is "a ways" from flying, and rather than getting "stalled out"
I have been reading posts on several different lists.

Head sets, and the high noise level in another (non KR2 experimental had
gotten a thread going on which kinds of headsets were best. I would hope
that the composite construction of the KR2 sould help deaden a little sound.
I had always wondered about fitting foam into the grid wooden gridwork of the
inside of the KR2 boat., and covering that with a thin fabric for looks.

  Dann

Here was a pretty graphic post from the sonerai list today on HeadSets :

"Bob...this is not a thrashing...but I have done just as you suggest on your
post. My Continental has (4)equal length exhaust 25"+-. Many people have
commented how quiet it is. Most of noise is not coming from the engine. As
someone once told me that flying a Sonerai was like being inside of a metal
trash can being hit with a stick. Also the shape of the fuselage is shaped
like a megaphone ...with the pilot sitting at the mouth of the megaphone. My
head set of choice is a 15year old David Clark H10-40 modified with the ANR
kit by Headsets Inc, and gel ear seals. It is uncomfortable...but it very
quiet. I would like to make the group aware that the ANR part on noise
reduction DOES NOT PROTECT YOUR HEARING. The passive part of the head set is
what protects your hearing. A good head set must provide both types of
protection. Earplugs are also good passive protection.
Anyway...the David Clarks, foam and gel seals mashing down on my ears
although uncomfortable are doing their job..Ivan "

I am wondering about instrumentation sources. When I got my private
pilots' lic back in 1969, I got most of my first 40 hours learning to fly,
in a 1946 ( or maybe it was a 47 ?) Aeronca Champ. As I recall, it had
only 5 instruments: an airspeed indicator, a tach, a magnetic compas, a
slip- turn bank indicator, and an altimeter.

So far the only gage that I have from my KR2 is an airspeed indicator.
I definately don't want a massive 20 = pound gyro compus, or similar
massive artificial horizon, like I saw sell on eBay last month.

What kind of instruments are most commonly going into the KR2 ..
What instruments populate your KR2 panels?

There are so many choices of used stuff on ebay. Even in used turn-bank
indicators there is a choice of vacume, or electric ?

As of Sunday night, there is still a 2 place mid engine sonerai being sold on
ebay with a 2180 engine. Reading the questions, the seller responded that the
propeller was a " rear drive ".

So.. he must have had the engine reversed ? How common is this?

Reading on plans from Sunday's posts.. must be pretty common for builders to
end up with multiple sets. I have the original set of plans that came with
my basic KR2, and a unused 2004 set of KR2S plans.

My KR2 also has the original kr2 retract gear. The fellow that I bought it

I figured if the gear ever retracted at the wrong time, it would mean a prop
strike, ruin the prop and probably also cost a crank shaft, plus whatever wing
/body damage.

Oh.. several have asked if I wanted to sell my extra KR2S plans. I don't
think so, but Mark Langerford's version of a streched / widened KR2S with the

I

Mark Langford has shared so much good information on web pages,
that most anything he says is fine with me.

But people do throw rocks... like the A & P that I shot the breese with a
couple months back.

My local A & P scoffed at both Corvair and VW.. he said get a "real airplane
engine".

Right now, I still don't have an ready to fly engine.
I have a disassembled corvair safe and dry in a crate,
but I am on the look out for a reasonably priced VW
that will get me in the air.

After the November EAA chapter meeting in Mankato, Mn , I got to see a corvair
powered dragonfly II run.
The owner had taken out a vw engine, sold it, replacing it with a corvair..
As a result had most of a year as down time.
He was very proud of his corvair engine, but it still wasn't running quite up
to par.

As I understand it, he was using VW jugs, and shortened connecting rods.. etc.
Kind of a hybrid VW/ Corvair.
More horse power, less weight.

Steve Jones, and Bill Clapp used to fly a VW in his earlier KR2. Why
didn't
Bill build his new S with a VW engine?Steve Glover was in the

several
folks who've bought VW powered projects that are now converting them to

If I remember correctly the Corvair College is this
coming weekend. Florida is a long drive, and my
Mankato Mn chapter 642 meeting is this weekend, but
the temptation is strong. I have a half built tail
dragger KR2 plus a Corvair engine sitting in a crate /
box in my quonset.

KR> Re: KR2 VW reduction Tork...KRnet vol 347, Issue 379

2008-10-12 Thread Dann Johnson

Greetings.

I have been trying to follow the gear reduction /
Tork / vs hourse power thread. Horse power should
basically be constant, that is just foot pounds of
energy per second... just the friction costs of the
reduction drive. Like my cordless dewalt drill can
still drive a screw in on low, after it stalled out on
high, (because the battery is weak). More tork on low
speed.

After trying to follow the Horse power/ Tork / Gear
reduction ... I am leaning more and more towards
buying that... For a couple of reasons. A slower
turning prop, even if it has a more agressive pitch so
it takes a bigger bite of the air should be enough
more efficient to compensate for lost friction in the
reduction drive. 2nd.. reason is that the VW crank
failures, and the corvair crank failures that I have
read about in FAA accident reports, IMHO make the prop
 vibration stability gear reduction worthwhile.

This Spring, I bought a set of KR2S Plans.. then
I bought a partially completed KR2 (original plans)
back in April that I intend to get flying. It came
with a Great Planes VW motor mount. but the prior
owner had a corvair engine lined up that I bought
also.

Fly in the ointment was when my local A & P / EAA guy
that I spoke with told me not to screw around ... just
get a "real airplane engine" ... 100 horse or better
Continental and go from there.

32 years ago in college, I had an original "first
run" set of KR1 plans that Ken said he got flying
for $500, including engine, gages, everything.

P.S. After finding this list... for about 5 months I
have been mostly lurking.

Ron,

Actually, The more I read, the more I am "sold" on
the TT-2000 and the TT-2200 with the reduction drive.
The big selling point for me is less chance of a crank
failure/ more efficent prop. Will the tt-2000 fit my
Great planes motor mount? What are the listed prices?

The point that Scott was making about the Type I VW ?
HMMM :
It looks to me like the web page below says Type I .

http://usa.vw-engines.com/
Cut and paste from that web page.
" PSRU Drive
"Texas Twister 1800"
This engine based on the type 1 VW engine produces an
incredible 200ft lb + Torque and with 85 Horsepower
driven through our Helical Gear Drive will surely give
your Aircraft what it needs up front.
Double Angular contact Thrust Races ensure Propeller
Forces are adequately isolated from the crankshaft
Oil Cooler Included with every Engine.
Factory Tested on 100 LL prior to shipment.

Scott,

Ron Slender asked me to post this regarding the
wording on his web page.

Scott,

Looking at the article written on our web site it does
say type 4 not type 1 as mentioned by yourself. (Type
1V shown as roman numerals )
We say in that article that 100 hp and 200 ft lb + of
torque is what you need up front. If it were wrong I
would change it but it isn`t.

The KR was designed for a 60 hp vw direct drive
engine.
The aircraft now is being fitted with nearly twice
capacity engines of various manufacturers and yet the
prop diameters are restricted to the original design
of undercarriage.

Why
Those that do increase prop diameter end up with a
more efficient airplane. It is then a matter of
matching performance with diameter and pitch.

There is no advantage using our 100 hp gear drive
engine in a KR unless you can swing a 60 inch diameter
prop. The advantages then would be a much shorter take
off run, most likely significantly better climb out
and probably a more economical cruise mode due to
higher prop efficiency attained by being able to use a
more efficient diameter propeller.

Gear driving an engine optimises a unique condition
allowing the engine to reach maximum power and yet
deliver more efficient propeller rpm.
It gets better too, NO prop forces acting directly to
a crankshaft, no thrust forces acting on the
crankshaft in unison to prop and power loading and an
engine that is designed to run at an rpm range as
accustomed as were in a car.

Individual aircraft operation is what the pilot
enjoys. Most who own one want optimum cruise against
fuel economy and the cruise is set accordingly.
Those that want to light up the sky can do that too.
An RG TT 2200 EFI running a 60 X 70 inch pitch prop
would most likely do that too in a KR2.

KR> KR Down

2008-10-12 Thread Dann Johnson

Reading the FAA KR accident reports over past 5 years, it almost all went down
to engine failures. The good news looked to be that mostly the pilots walked
away with minor injuries. Motor mounts on my KR2 are currently for Great
Planes VW, which sounded good to me before getting the corvair.

Does anyone have statitics on how many KR2 / or perhaps other experimental
craft that generally use VW, like the Sonerai that are flying with VW / or
Covair vs "rea" airplane engines like Continental.

KR> internet friend or foe

2008-10-12 Thread Dann Johnson
Don has a good point. When I was a college student traveling in Mexico, my=
Spanish teacher had warned me that I should always ask directions from 3 =
different (sets of ) people. He warned me that, "one seldom gets the same =
directions, 3 times in a row". However, if you get 2 sets of people tellin=
g you the same thing, the directions are usually safe to follow.=20

Beginning with the GOOGLE internet search engine , a couple of months ago, =
I was able to find and join a local EAA chapter. I made my first EAA chapte=
r meeting in April, after missing the March meeting by a couple hours... (=
the time posted on the web page was wrong.. the chapter now meets at 1:3=
0 PM rather than 4 PM).=20=20=20

The internet has helped give me the confidence to finally act on my dream. =
I started flying when I was 16 and have held a private pilot's lic since I=
was 17. The realities of raising a large family has contributed to keepin=
g me out of the air most of the last 30 years. With a CFI on board, I ren=
ted a Cessna 172 and went flying last Saturday. How I love flying!

I was a member of the national EAA back in the 1980s, and took my wife and =
children with me on several pilgramiges to Oshkosh to oogle KR2 (s). More=
 than 30 years ago.. circa 1974, a college buddy and I got a set of KR1 =
plans, so I have been lurking around the dreamy KR fringes for a long time.=
In the early 1990s I hung around the garage of a pilot friend who was tr=
ying to complete a KR2 that he had purchased in boat stage.=20=20=20

Now I hope to do similar, when I can get it hauled home to my garage. My =
wife says that it can't occupy our garage before #3 son's High School Gra=
duation on May 22... .=20
=20=20
I wonder, what is a good estimate of numbers of flying KR1, KR2, and KR2S. =
Reading the online FAA accident reports, it looked like the majority of=
the KR crashes are due to engine failure during takeoff. ( Now, I am defi=
nately leaning to a duel ignition system ).
