Joe, It was nice to have met you, although I don't recall if we met but for only a brief second. You do have a very sharp KR2 which is one of the first ones I have seen up close. Keep flying safe. I will be working hard on my Buttercup and have already sent my heads and Crankshaft for machining. If William has one in the Southeast in March or so, I will be one of the ones finishing my engine at that time. Best wishes. I had a great time this year and was able to do a little sight seeing just for myself. The trip to Florida with Chris and Dan was entertaining. I also can report that the demonstrated cross wind landing capabilitiy of a KR2S is 18 gusting to 27 and I did not have to go back to the runway to pick up parts either. Departure was even more thrilling, My mom asked me on the way to the airport this morning if I was scared - I said no, anxious- If I was scared I wouldn't be going. I didn't really check actual wind speed this morning but it sure felt like 20 gust to 30 @ 75cross. Anyway, Thanks to everyone that I met and to William, Grace, And especially Ed for putting up with us. I will try to remember names and hope to see more flyers soon. I loved the building of my plane and engine but I am living the dream of a child now and revel in it everyday. I hope that there are more out there like me that are working hard now. The short of the trip is another 15 hours on 357CJ pushing the total over 450 hrs. and well over 2000 miles this weekend. Blue skies, Joe Horton, Coopersburg, Pa. KR> Re: Oshkosh
I just got back from Osh as well. I spent almost 2 full days and walked at least 9 miles between the two days and participated in 3 of the workshops on the Thursday that it rained much of the day on and off. Two days is not enough time imo to see it all other than just a quick look at most of it and walking like you have somewhere to go in a hurry. I was really in awe of the scope, size and variety of aircraft and quality of the experimentals too. I just ordered my plans to build a Wittman Buttercup, so in 2011 I hope to fly it into Oshkosh. I am going to make it my goal to fly into Sun N' Fun in April 2011, but I know it is a lofty goal at that. It was impressive to see the turnout in spite of a weak economy. I am certain that the EAA was quite pleased by the comments that were made. There is some amazing stuff going on. I was surprised in the two days I was there I didn't see any of the KR2 fleet at all. I may have been persuaded to build one, but in the end I did want a tube fuselage and old style high wing. I won't be going as fast, but stol is a nice feature. I hope to see some of you guys at future fly-ins. Be safe. -Original Message- From: krnet-boun...@mylist.net [mailto:krnet-boun...@mylist.net] On Behalf Of smwood Sent: Sunday, August 02, 2009 11:40 PM To: kr...@mylist.net Subject: KR> Re: Oshkosh Just got back from OSH. Camped out on the grass. Hot showers were nice, but never used the new fangled flush toilets in my shower house. The porta-potty habit is still in place; no big deal. What was a big deal was to meet Willie all the way from South Africa. Willie said he sure wished he had one of those new fangled mixture meters in his Cessna 150. That would have saved him an engine rebuild because of his running aggressive leaning and not really knowing what the mixture was. I suppose you could get 337 approval for your certificated Cessna if you also had an auto fuel STC. Don't need any such approval for your experimental. There were 20 people in the audience at the Mixture Meter forum on Thursday morning. I am not sure if they were there to hear what I had to say or just getting out of the pouring rain. No fan mail pouring in yet, but Mark Forss did ask me to do it again next year. I volunteered at the Composites Workshop for five sessions. At 34 persons per session, that's 170 people that may have learned a little something about wet lay-ups, decided to build a composite aircraft or not, put up a fiberglass canopy frame for an RV-something, or even maybe build a KR. You can never accurately predict where that little bit of knowledge and inspiration will lead. I also got to build an emergency replacement fairing for a retract landing gear. The pilot was concerned that the gear may jam in the up position without a viable fairing in place. His alternative would have been to fly home with the gear extended at gear extension speed and resultant fuel burn. No 337 there either. I got to talk shop for about two hours with the avionics engineer on a gee-whiz all glass LSA. He had not a clue on human factors engineering. I listened to Mike Melville, the featured speaker at the Home Builders dinner on Thursday, as he recounted his adventures as a test pilot for Burt Rutan. The Airbus A380 was impressive outside, underneath and inside. You only got to go underneath the A380 if you stood in the long line to go inside. That was a real aluminum overcast. The A380 on display was a flight test bird and had 25 tons of instrumentation onboard. Yeah! Bring it on! To say I had a great time and lots of satisfaction attending AirVenture 09 would be quite an understatement. My assessment on AirVenture: Just like life, to get something out of it, you have to put something into it. Fiberglass Coatings, Inc. in St. Petersburg, Florida has DivinyCell and all kinds of epoxy resins, fiberglass, vinylester, and just about any other foam, coating, paint, resin or filler you would ever need for a boat or an airplane. I get all of my stuff there.
