I'll talked to Charlie Becker from EAA today. He is doing a forum Saturday afternoon at the gathering on how to register you home built. He asked me if I could check if anyone knows how to use Solid Works. His presentation that he's going to do at the Gathering is on that program. That software program is relatively new to him and he's not comfortable with using it yet. He was hoping someone would be there to rescue him if it crashed. Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618 406 4705

KR> ferrite toroids
I got a response from Jim at RST Engineering. I will past it below. So with this info and the links that Steve G. gave me. I should be able to make some good and inexpensive nav antanas. Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618 406 4705 We recommend RG-58. If you choose to use another coax diameter, you are on your own. It took us two years of experiments to determine the best toroid mix for VHF antennas for RG-58. Antennas are reciprocal. That is, they have no idea whether they are transmit or receive. We believe ferrites are necessary on both transmit and receive antennas. Jim
KR> ferrite toroids
I've got one of those as well. Put the response public. I'm sure other people care too. Ray_pilot New Orleans Ok, here is one of the responses I got off net. Name has been removed to protect his smartness. Paul, Receiving ONLY antennas do not need a RF choke, which is what those things really do when installed. They are used on transmitting coax to keep reflected RF energy (standing waves) from feeding back down the coax into the transmitter and usually ruining the output transistor(s). Sort of like an electronic check valve. RST engineering is still in business, and they sell kits of stuff to make antennas - which included's 20 ferrite toroids. Check it out at http://www.rst-engr.com/ I don't know what the diameter of RG-400 is, so if you can tell me I would appreciate it. Have a good 4th weekend xxx Thanks for the response. The RG-400 diameter is .200" What you said is my understanding. But on RST front page they have a picture of a VHF Nav antana. It looks like it has toroids. This is were I'm confused Paul - Right you are - I just looked and sure enough, there seem to be toroids in that picture. Now I'm not sure whether he used the wrong picture or the wrong description, or whether he really does use toroids on receiving antennas. I can see no reason to have them . . . but read on. That pictured antenna is a dipole, and I have used dipoles with no balun in ham radio - and believe me, they receive fine for VOI CE reception. Whether or not a NAV signal is that much different I do not know, or whether there is something about it that would make a difference. I don't think so, but could sure be wrong. One thing I have noticed about NAV antennas (OMNI?) on planes is that they are vee shaped, usually pointing the open end of the vee toward the front of the plane, but sometimes toward the rear. Maybe that makes a difference as well so there are not blank spots in receiving NAV signals. I guess I should not really have commented without absolutely being positive about the toroids on NAV antennas, but for what it's worth, it is true that for other uses RECEIVING antennas do not need a balun or RF choke to function well. Could you experiment on the ground with a temporary setup to prove the proper reception, or would it have to be done in the air to be able to receive a signal where you are ? I don't have a nav receiver and indicator here to test with, or I would. As I learned many, many years ago with ham radio, experimenting in that field is as much fun and pain as doing it with airplanes. :-) If you find out what the answer to the toroid question is, please let me know sometime. I can always learn something new. Thanks for the coax diameter info. That helps me. x

I don't think take off would be a problem at all, but it would be challenging to hit the front edge of the runway every time. Eventually, you'll end up in the position where you're too fast to stop and too slow to get back off for a go around. I'd opt for keeping the plane at a longer runway if that's a viable option. They and we are getting into the group where cancer, circulatory issues and such are more and more prevalent. Physicals are an excellent procedure to find and head off those health problems. Colonoscopy is considered the "gold standard" for detecting and preventing colorectal cancer. Blood tests can quickly find all manner of health issues. KR> Sanding blocks
Thansk for the Ideas. I have a piece of 4" schedule 40. It's a little heavy at 4'. I might go to Home depot and get a piece of schedule 20. I'm trying a 1' x 4" with a L angle on top to stiffen it up. With two vise grips clamped on to it for handle it working good. I found a can on of brush on Contact cement in the basement which is working much better then the spray. I think for the outboard wing and the turtleback I'll use the PVC pipe. I didn't know sanding could be so fun. Seeing my strips of wood and foam blocks turn into a horizontal stabilizer. . Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618-406-4705_ I did the same thing with a 2x4. Staple the edge of the sandpaper to the vertical side of the 2x4. Worked for me. Sid Wood Tri-gear KR-2 N6242 Mechanicsville, MD, _ (http://www.mykitlog.com/PaulVisk/)
KR> Sanding Blocks
Any suggestions on sanding blocks. I made a 4ft board for my horizontal stabilizer out of a straight 2x4. I'm having problems keeping the sandpaper on the board. I used contact cement and that's not seem to hold and when the edges peal up it digs into the foam. I'm at the start of a lot of sanding and I figure there's a LOT of experience out there with sanding. I could definitely use some suggestions. Thanks Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618-406-4705

Spar varnish has been formulated to endure the elements. It's hard to find a wood boat that isn't covered in the stuff. Without searching through the plans and citing exact statements, I can say that urethane foam is certainly the expectation, and the parts list that came with my plans calls out urethane foam panels of various thicknesses. Page 10 of the KR2 plans certainly calls out urethane foam in the only sentence under the heading of "SHAPING FOAM". That's not to say that you can't use other foams, as long as you consider the foam-eating effects of chemicals, gasolines, and even some epoxies. But as was mentioned, there's nothing wrong with using polystyrene other than it's a seriously larger effort to sand it, and it'll weigh a little more. Of course the canard guys have demonstrated that polystyrene is easy to hot-wire, and works well for aircraft use. Another upside is that I'll bet it's a lot less likely to develop skin bubbles, due to an improved tensile strength of the surface, making the glue bond stronger. The tensile strength of urethane foam far lower. You'll be OK, and I'll bet your biceps are getting bigger by the day... KR> Builders logs
Does anyone have some advise on kitlog Pro or some other program to document my progress. I have seen other builder sites and I'm not at a level to do something like my own.
KR> Looking for wood.
Anyone heading to the gathering that has leftover wood and anything else. I'm looking to buy. I'll have a pocket full of cash waiting.
KR> Wicks spruce kit
Hi everyone, First I would like to thank Rodger and Larry for showing me there planes this last week or so. It was great seeing them and getting vary excited about my project. Tomorrow is my big day. I go for my flight physical. If I pass it I'll start order plans and start cleaning my garage out. If I fail. I guess I'll have to start my honey do list. Starting with remodeling the kitchen. Boy! I hope I pass. I haven't flown for 25 years and now with the kids out it's my time. Over the past years I had some health issues which I don't think there disqualifying. Heck, I got a DOT physical for being a over the road truck driver. Wish me luck . Know for my question. I went over to Wicks the other day and got a price for the spruce kit for the KR-2S for just under $1500.00. I called Spruce Aircraft and there price is around $1,100.00. I don't know if the there kits are different or what. I asked both stores what the price for a 5/8" x 5/8" spruce strip was and Wicks was $1.19 a ft and Spruce Aircraft was $1.41 a ft. I don't get it. I would like to support Wicks being there right down the street. But that's a lot of money. Any ideas what's going on.
KR> The Gathering
I don't have a plane either. I'll be there Saturday. Being I don't have a plane yet and just coming for information and to meet a lot of people. Should I still register? I'm not planing to attend the dinner.
