KR> ferrite toroids

2016-07-15 Thread ppaulvsk at aol.com
I got a response from Jim at RST Engineering. I will past it below. So with
this info and the links that Steve G. gave me. I should be able to make some
good and inexpensive nav antanas.

Paul Visk
Belleville Il.
618 406 4705

We recommend RG-58. If you choose to use another coax diameter, you are on
your own. It took us two years of experiments to determine the best toroid mix
for VHF antennas for RG-58.

Antennas are reciprocal. That is, they have no idea whether they are transmit
or receive. We believe ferrites are necessary on both transmit and receive
antennas.

Ok, here is one of the responses I got off net.

Name has been removed to protect his smartness.

Paul,
Receiving ONLY antennas do not need a RF choke, which is what those
things really do when installed. They are used on transmitting coax to
keep reflected RF energy (standing waves) from feeding back down the
coax into the transmitter and usually ruining the output
transistor(s). Sort of like an electronic check valve.

RST engineering is still in business, and they sell kits of stuff to
make antennas - which included's 20 ferrite toroids. Check it out at

http://www.rst-engr.com/

I don't know what the diameter of RG-400 is, so if you can tell me I
would appreciate it.

Have a good 4th weekend
xxx

Thanks for the response.
The RG-400 diameter is .200"
What you said is my understanding. But on RST front page they have a
picture of a VHF Nav antana. It looks like it has toroids. This is were I'm
confused

Paul -

Right you are - I just looked and sure enough, there seem to be toroids
in that picture. Now I'm not sure whether he used the wrong picture or
the wrong description, or whether he really does use toroids on
receiving antennas. I can see no reason to have them . . . but read on.

That pictured antenna is a dipole, and I have used dipoles with no balun
in ham radio - and believe me, they receive fine for VOI

CE reception. Whether or not a NAV signal is that much different I do
not know, or whether there is something about it that would make a
difference. I don't think so, but could sure be wrong. One thing I
have noticed about NAV antennas (OMNI?) on planes is that they are vee
shaped, usually pointing the open end of the vee toward the front of the
plane, but sometimes toward the rear. Maybe that makes a difference as
well so there are not blank spots in receiving NAV signals.

I guess I should not really have commented without absolutely being
positive about the toroids on NAV antennas, but for what it's worth, it
is true that for other uses RECEIVING antennas do not need a balun or RF
choke to function well.

Could you experiment on the ground with a temporary setup to prove the
proper reception, or would it have to be done in the air to be able to
receive a signal where you are ? I don't have a nav receiver and
indicator here to test with, or I would. As I learned many, many years
ago with ham radio, experimenting in that field is as much fun and pain
as doing it with airplanes. :-)

If you find out what the answer to the toroid question is, please let me
know sometime. I can always learn something new.

Thanks for the coax diameter info. That helps me.

operation. I don't think take off would be a problem at all, but it would be
challenging to hit the front edge of the runway every time. Eventually, you'll
end up in the position where you're too fast to stop and too slow to get back
off for a go around. I'd opt for keeping the plane at a longer runway if that's
a viable option. As always, your mileage may vary, and my opinion may be skewed

When would you use the AS5046 airfoil and not the AS5048? I made my rib

mistake the AS5046. I noticed the height of the main spar is thicker.

Wings is FAA safety program. I don't no much about it. I know you can get
some type of credit towards your review when you complete a course. There
are hundreds of them. There are some EAA webinars you can also get credit
for. Maybe a CFI can explain it a little better.

Not KR related but vary informative. Before my flight instructor would
sign off on my review. He wanted me to sign up for this FAA Wing program and
take this Flight Review Prep Guide. course #ALC-25. For someone who has'nt
flown for 23 years. It was a great refresher course. There are many other
courses available under this program.

2014-07-05 Thread PPaulVsk at aol.com
I'm using 3/8" 4130. I measured with wall thickness and showed .085. That's
with some burrs. Then I taped the ends out with 1/4 28 tape with a #3
drill bit. Then installed My Rod ends. It's a little overkill with the wall
thickness but It was easy.

Do you prefer blonds or brunets? Same deal, it will work either
way. I went parallel to the trail edge but parallel to the spar
would allow better alignment with air stream of the linkage.

If things aren't quite square you can bend the pushrod a bit or put a
slight twist in the bellcrank arm but square is always good.

KR> Sanding blocks

2014-04-27 Thread PPaulVsk at aol.com
Thansk for the Ideas. I have a piece of 4" schedule 40. It's a little
heavy at 4'. I might go to Home depot and get a piece of schedule 20. I'm
trying a 1' x 4" with a L angle on top to stiffen it up. With two vise grips
clamped on to it for handle it working good. I found a can on of brush on
Contact cement in the basement which is working much better then the spray. I
think for the outboard wing and the turtleback I'll use the PVC pipe.
I didn't know sanding could be so fun. Seeing my strips of wood and foam
blocks turn into a horizontal stabilizer. .

A few months ago someone posted about some fiberglass gear legs that look

.
One thing beside needing trimming them is that they are 1" thick. I
think that's thicker then the Diehl gear and might be too stiff.

Hey Paul, I'm also new to the net but not new to protective finishes.
First off Home Depot does sell varnishes. Verathane, Minwax & Rustoleum
produce excellent products and are suitable for outdoor use. Urethanes are
liquid
plastics until they dry. Both petroleum and water bases versions are
strong and durable but most don't posses good ultra violet resistance. They
also
vary in hardness and water resistance. Spar varnish has been formulated to
endure the elements. It's hard to find a wood boat that isn't covered in
the stuff. Go back to Home Depot and find a competent sales associate or to
a paint store and talk to a paint pro. Good luck.

2013-12-14 Thread PPaulVsk at aol.com

I'm probably going with Dr. Dean hinges on my tail because that's what
everyone is doing now. But, has anyone heard of the one of the original U
channel hinges failing or wearing out and had to be changed? The price for
one
hinge set up is about $11.00 at Wicks. Times nine hinges or so. You could
buy a lot of U channel for that price.

Without searching through the plans and citing exact statements, I can say
that urethane foam is certainly the expectation, and the parts list that
came with my plans calls out urethane foam panels of various thicknesses.
Page 10 of the KR2 plans certainly calls out urethane foam in the only
sentence under the heading of "SHAPING FOAM".

That's not to say that you can't use other foams, as long as you consider
the foam-eating effects of chemicals, gasolines, and even some epoxies.
But
as was mentioned, there's nothing wrong with using polystyrene other than
it's a seriously larger effort to sand it, and it'll weigh a little more.

Of course the canard guys have demonstrated that polystyrene is easy to
hot-wire, and works well for aircraft use. Another upside is that I'll
bet
it's a lot less likely to develop skin bubbles, due to an improved tensile
strength of the surface, making the glue bond stronger. The tensile
strength of urethane foam far lower. You'll be OK, and I'll bet your
biceps
are getting bigger by the day...

Rather than add the softer ply under the fitting, I'd change the
dimension of either the inner or outer section spar cap to make it
work. As you can see, those dimensions are not cast in stone.

2013-09-12 Thread PPaulVsk at aol.com
Hi everyone, First I would like to thank Rodger and Larry for showing me
there planes this last week or so. It was great seeing them and getting vary
excited about my project.
Tomorrow is my big day. I go for my flight physical. If I pass it I'll
start order plans and start cleaning my garage out. If I fail. I guess I'll
have to start my honey do list. Starting with remodeling the kitchen. Boy! I
hope I pass. I haven't flown for 25 years and now with the kids out it's my
time. Over the past years I had some health issues which I don't think
there disqualifying. Heck, I got a DOT physical for being a over the road
truck driver. Wish me luck .
Know for my question. I went over to Wicks the other day and got a price
for the spruce kit for the KR-2S for just under $1500.00. I called Spruce
Aircraft and there price is around $1,100.00. I don't know if the there kits
are different or what. I asked both stores what the price for a 5/8" x
5/8" spruce strip was and Wicks was $1.19 a ft and Spruce Aircraft was $1.41
a ft. I don't get it. I would like to support Wicks being there right down
the street. But that's a lot of money. Any ideas what's going on.
