KR> Grounded - wheel pant

2011-12-04 Thread Phil Matheson
How do you attach something to the end of the axle, that can be used for the
attach point for the wheel pant?
-

Dan

I have Matco, I drilled the axle, as per the KR instructions, made a "C"
clip to replace the split pin through the bearing nut, I then made a nylon
bush to fit on the end of the axle, to the wheel pant, bolted the unit to
the axel. I glued a small bracket to the pant to lock wire the drilled bolt
head.

I've heard you can mix rubbing alcohol with it and the alcohol will
evaporate out after you have spread it. You might test that on something

I have been using what your guys over there call rubbing alcohol (

pin holes, etc.

KR> Urgent- Need new Engine mount

2011-10-01 Thread Phil Matheson
I have a spare mount but I have found it is NOT as wide across the fire wall
mounts as the damaged mount.

This is a KR2 mount not sure is it is Harpi or what

I need a mount with fire wall brackets with the 4 x AN3 bolts per mount (16
bolts) and
16 inches ( centre to centre) wide and 13 1/2 inches deep.
(Some mounts are only 13inches wide)
The engine is 8 1/4 inched off the fire wall.

The engine bolts holes are 9 3/4 inches wide x 10 3/4 deep.

Both are the same except the width of the mount brackets

KR> Engine Failure on Take OFF.

2011-09-26 Thread Phil Matheson
Well, it can happen to you.

Last night 1730 at 500 ft Engine stopped dead. Lack of landing spots. Had to
make 150' turn to safe ground.

Check, tanks pumps NO start, but engine wind milling. A bit hot and ran out
of field, had to lift over fence, then channel, stall, O S*#T - ground.
Bugger.

Walked away. KR home in my workshop.

Damage,
Prop, nose wheel collapse, L main collapse. Under inner wing whole from
wheel. But main leg undamaged, the main bolts Sheared OFF, as did the nose
wheel to fire wall bolts. NO cowl damage only paint. Engine mount bent.

FOUND the cause this morning, the coil lead came out of the distributor Cap.
No wonder it would not start.
Did I seem Mark Jones make a cover or his dist. cap, Should listen to Mark.

The first KR has arrived at Mt.Vernon for the Gathering. :-) I flew
my KR in to be hangared at Mt.Vernon for the Gathering so I can drive
my truck load of items to Mt.Vernon on Wednesday and start to get
things set up. Everyone at Mt.Vernon is pumped for our
arrival. Several nice additions since 2009 are an outdoor patio at
the restaurant and a new 11,800 square foot hangar with two full
baths for the campers. Chris is wrapping up the national light sport
expo today and then he starts getting ready for us next weekend.

I have just found out it was Peter Gilbertson, from Perth, Mark would have

There is a copy of an email from Perth Aussie KR member.

Hi Phil

Yes it was Peter. He had just taken off behind a Varieze and Gordon's BD5
but was not climbing. He appeared to decide to abort prior to reaching the
end of the strip but landed very heavily with the gear up. Fire broke out a
few seconds later. Luckily he came to rest just outside the Northam Aero
Club clubhouse where many of the spectators were assembled so rescuers got
to him within seconds, with fire extinguishers and strong arms. News reports
indicates the burns are not serious but we don't know how bad the back
injuries are yet. It could have been very much worse.

This extremely dangerous situation with the seat bottom has existed for
quite some time, judging by the elongated holes in the aluminum and other

KR> Re:Up Date

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Well I can not believe how quiet the net is.

I have been modifying my cowl to suit my engine air in takes, as my RG 2000
has a gear drive, the engine sits lower in the cowl and the cowl in lets are
to high for a good direct flow, as well the inlets need to be low enough to
have a ramp so the air can climb up hill to get to the barrels. This ramp
allows a more direct and better cooling when the KR is in it's nose high
climb configurations.

So I cut out the old in lets last night and glassed over them, now I have to
cut out new in lets and flare and glass them.

As my engine has twin Stromberg Carbs with the oil dampened slides, the carb
oil level has to checked before each flight or the carb will NOT get full
throttle. I cut three inspection hatches in the top of the cowl, 2 for the
carbs and 1 for the oil dip stick.
Then ! hopefully the cowl can be painted, the barrel shrouds finished,
and that will be it, all Finished, except for the C of A

KR> Glue Joints not holding

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
  Brad
I do not understand the mix ( uniform white paste)

The T88 I have used was an amber colour, and mixed up to a honey
consistency. As Mark L says let it soak in for a short before clamping.
I'm sorry I can not be of more help, but I did not have any problems. Once
the ply is over the joint, it will be a lot stronger, due to larger surface
area.

But still the wood should break, not the glue.

It will be interesting to hear from the rest of the crew.

Eye bolts through the spar out near the wing top end, or epoxy a block frame

KR> Roll over Pertection

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
This is the requirement for a roll over bar, as per regs

" The structure must be designed to protect the occupant in a complete
turnover, assuming, in the absence of a more rational analysis:-"
(1) An upwards ultimate inertia force of 3g's ; and
(2) A coefficient of friction of 0.5 at the ground.

SO, KR2 of
1000 lbs weight X 3 g's = 3000 lbs,
times 0.5 = 1500lbs. force hitting you bar.

Then remember that you plane is then sliding backwards over the ground?? so
the force is then trying to push the bar onto YOU. ( that's why I have two
cables back to the tail bulk head).

So, IS can your glass roll over protection strong enough???

Always ask someone qualified, who knows.

KR> Belt Drive PSRU

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Up date

My engine has been returned to VW Engines to have a problem fixed with the
oil Cooler set up. (a damaged fitting in the block that needed some work.)

Ron Slender has phoned to say that VW Engines will not be making anymore
Helical Geared PSRU. ( Geared Drives)
Instead, because of the cost of production and they are trying to stay
competitive, They will be using a belt drives from now on.

He offered me a great deal to change it over to belt drive while he has the
engine.
This is worth some thought, has it will save weight, less moving , and
wearing parts, less noise, vibration and harmonics, as well as less service
costs.

Belts should last ??? 500 hours plus

Comments for far have been positive.

What do you guys in the know think??

So I need to make up my mind quickly.

So I will be working to have the airframe finished when the engine returns
in a few weeks.

VW Engines have yet to update their web page to reflect this yet, as these
things take time.

Retail Cost of the Belt PSRU should be out soon if anyone is interested.,
But I would think they will only be available for the Type 4 rear
drive.,but I will let you know soon.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for adding me to the local KR list you have here in Australia but I
won't be proceeding with building a KR plane. I sent Mrs Rand my money
about 5 weeks ago and I have tried nearly every day for one whole month to
get a few simple questions answered by her about buying kit components - but
all to no avail I'm afraid. Her refusal to communicate in any way, shape or
form, made me realise the futility I would face if I ever needed to actually
try and order some components from RR, so I sent her a fax last week asking
for my money to be refunded (though I haven't had a response to that request
either). If I can't get a refund I will offer the plans up for sale as soon
as the arrive.

All the best to you and the other local builders.

Before I mounted my cooler under and behind the engine, I was going to mount

the bottom.( with a light guard)
OR
I was going to mount if on it's edge, on the firewall running along side
the cowl, with air inlets as I have on my cooler now, and have the outlet
through the back edge of cowl on one side, and add exit slots like you see
in the Vintage Car bonnet. I would seal outlet to cooler with foam, so the
cooler would not be removed with cowl.

Bill
What a great incentive for others. Here in Australia we an RV guy who does
the same thing and he is always busy.

I have considered the same thing many times but my work would be a problem.
Good luck and I think you will be on a winner!

KR> G Meter

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
I fitted a GT-50 G meter into my KR yesterday from A/Spruce. Has anyone
used one?, the instructions say to protect the wiring with a fuse or
c/breaker, but they do not say what size fuse to place in wire 3 & 4.

KR> Props

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
I was always told the 3 was for show and 2 for go. But
Ron Slender ( VW Engines Aust)rang me the other night and said they have
been testing a new Bolly 3 blade on they RG2000 and it out climbed, out
cruised, and reduced the take off distance quite considerably by ONLY
replacing the Prop.

Go figure.?

KR> Oil Cooler. Under engine

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
I now have settled on my cooler location.
It is now mounted UNDER the engine at the rear. I have added 3 Air inlets at
the front
of the cowl. 2 for the cooler and one for the Cabin Heat. But I can remove
the cabin heat Scat tube and place it on the oil cooler in hot weather.
I have added photos to my
Engine - Oil Cooler page.

KR> Oil Cooler On Top

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Due to lack of room on top, type 4 driven from flywheel end I thinking of
placing my cooler under the engine and mount off the engine mount and from
leg mount, then duct 2 x 2inch scat tubing to a cowl around the oil cooler
with ram air???
Would this be ok. My cooler is 11inches x 7 inches, and needs some room to
mount.

KR> Wiring Update

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Just a note to say I have not dropped off the face of the earth and still
building.
Last night I finished and tested all my wiring, and very please to say all
works well. I even have 45 psi oil pressure while cranking without plugs.
I have a bit of Strobe noise in the radio with the squish tuned right down.

I have fitted new spinner, and now need to get the cowl fully fitted and
mount the oil cooler. And of course lots of little jobs.
Then you never know, it may even fly !

Photo's updated on my latest photo page of my web, Spinner, engine, fuel
pressure gauge set up.

Added a few photo's to web, update page. Second row and last photos. But not
much that shows up in photos for all the work I have done over the last few
weeks.

I posted off cheque and order for the KR2S plans, will be interesting to see
how long it takes to clear the bank cheque and get the plans here. ???

I'll keep you posted.

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
http://www.philskr2.50megs.com/photo.html

Sorry all, Dan said he could not find my photo's try this link!!!

The photo's are not the very latest but close.
Two in the second row and the two last spinner photo's.

Not very interesting, but I do not have the KR sitting all together. All I
really need to do now is find a place for this Darn oil cooler and paint the
wings , and just fitting the camlocks to the cowl !

Then start all the paper work.
They tell me when the paper work weighs as much as the plane, it is ready to
get a C of A !!!
