KR> California People:

2015-11-09 Thread T. W. Norman

Good afternoon,

I just received some information about an up and coming trip to Fairfield,
CA in January.

Are there any KR-2/2S owners that are around that area?

I am interested in finding someone who would be able to meet me at Nut Tree
Airport so I can get some ideas on how to finish my KR-2.

Also, I'm planning on getting checked out in a 172 for some local flying. Can
people give me a sense as what weather I should expect for January?

Thanks

KR> Phase 1 and Phase 2 flight testing

2015-10-23 Thread T. W. Norman

Good morning,

I have been doing some research on the flight testing for my KR-2. I'm not
planning on getting in the air with the aircraft until the spring, so I
think this winter I'm going to develop the plans for the flight tests.

One question I've been wondering is simply how many hours on average were
you guys able to complete Phase 1? Phase 2?

Thanks,

Trevor

KR> Cross-Country flying

2015-10-10 Thread T. W. Norman

Good afternoon,

Can you guys give me some feedback about the viability of using the KR-2 as
a cross-country aircraft? Is it comfortable for just a single person? What
range are you guys seeing out of your actual aircraft?

Would I know it may not be what it was designed for, but for a single guy
like me, I'm looking at the option of using it as an extended transporter.

Also, what speeds could I expect with the traditional VW/Revmaster 2100
engine?

Thanks!

KR> Antennas

2015-10-02 Thread T. W. Norman

Good evening, again,

I've been going through the archives and found some lite information about
antennas.

Are you guys mounting the antennas inside of the aircraft?

I have a comm/nav antenna, and a transponder antenna. What have you guys
found was a good place to mount them?

Thanks!

KR> Canopy/Seat

2015-10-02 Thread T. W. Norman

Good evening,

I've been able to finish my seats, and I am very pleased with the
results. However (you know how it is when someone says "however") I sat in
the airplane (and, yes, I'll admit to making airplane noises too) and I
lowered the canopy-the result was needing to cock my head to the right in
order to close it completely.

Now, my question is three-fold:
First, the seat itself is kind of like Mark Langford's in the design and
installation of the base product. Where it differs is the upholstery adds
about 3 inches to my height. Now, I'm only 5'5" so I should fit nicely in
the aircraft. So, my first question is should I recess the seat farther down
so that it's lower than the aft spar? It would mean re-building the seats
from scratch because of how the supports are developed. There is no
structural supports on the floor of the aircraft at all (which presented the
challenge to begin with).

Secondly, What are people's thoughts about raising the canopy? Has anyone
ever tried it? What trouble am I looking at to do this?
Thirdly, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, how would one go about
reclining the seat so that I can have more head clearance without losing
visibility?

In this situation, what would you guys recommend? Any of you found that
you're too tall for the setup? How did you overcome that?

Thanks!

KR> Electrical System

2015-09-28 Thread T. W. Norman

I've been looking on KRnet.org and found some good information about
electrical systems. What are some of your challenges, concerns and whatnot
you guys came across when designing your electrical system?

Thanks!

KR> Turtle deck question:

2015-09-28 Thread T. W. Norman

Good afternoon,

Thanks for all the responses on the CF and FG question.I found it very
helpful!

Now, for another question!

While I'm finishing up with the exterior work, I'm beginning to look inside
of the aircraft. One thing that I noticed is there is some (what I presume)
to be wasted space under the turtle deck.

Has anyone made a 1 or 2 piece mold so there is additional storage capacity
(obviously not very heavy, but still) right behind the seats and
incorporated the turtle deck into a 2-piece trunk?

I was looking at this as an option since the bracing looks like it would
conform to what I was looking for. I could put my bag there, and then maybe
smaller things up top with a restraint system.

I know this is all adding a bit of weight.I estimate that the aircraft
(without wings and engine) is about 250-300lbs. I estimate the completed
aircraft to be between 500-525lbs total. I'm saving a lot of space by
cutting where I can.

What are your guy's thoughts?

KR> Recognition Lights

2015-09-25 Thread T. W. Norman

I'm looking at installing Wig-Wag Recognition lights at the tips of the
wings. So, anyone have any suggestions or experiences with this process?
Cutting out a portion of the leading edge? Mounting them and so on?

Thanks!

KR> Fiberglass/Carbon Fiber combo

2015-09-25 Thread T. W. Norman

Good evening,

I managed to get started on a good chunk of smaller projects to finish the
larger picture.

But I do have one question, has anyone combined fiberglass with carbon fiber
in their projects? For example the instrument panel, leading edge and so on.

I have completed a carbon-fiber front and a fiberglass back to my new
instrument panel.I'm interested in seeing how it turns out.

Thanks,

Trevor

KR> Several Questions:

2015-09-22 Thread T. W. Norman

So, I'm finally getting started on my airplane I bought while I was
deployed. I conned a friend to help me by giving him the completed frame of
my Super Koala (his father is one of those who wanted a low and slow
aircraft). Tomorrow we are going to break ground on some of the projects I
have before I start putting everything together.

I am going to be cutting a thin line in the wing so I can lay electrical
cable to the position lights and strobes at the tips of the wings. The
person I bought the aircraft from didn't run any electrical through the
wings, so I'm thinking of using a dermal to cut a narrow deep line so I can
lay the cord without having to dig through the spar and what not. Then I
plan on filling in the hole with foam and re-applying fiberglass.

It was suggested that instead of placing it on the leading edge, that I
place the cut under the wing.

So, my question is which is a better idea, the leading edge, where it will
then be re-sealed/fiber-glassed or under the wing?

While on the subject of the wings, anyone have experience with STOLSPEED
Vortex Generators for the wings that they'd be willing to share their
performance experiences?

Also, I'm adding a smaller LED beacon to the top of the airframe, and where
it's going to sit is just a thin piece of fiberglass (about 2-3 feet behind
where the turtle-deck would be. Generally speaking, should I reinforce that
area before I install it, or leave it alone?

Third question, anyone have experience with designing electrical systems,
and installing cabin heaters using a shroud around the exhaust pipes?

Next, on the wing stubs, I will essentially need to cut out the top
fiberglass on both sides in order to re-enforce the areas where I'll be
walking on the wings so I can get in and out. What is the best way of doing
this? Adding wood or extra layers of fiberglass?

Lastly, anyone have suggestions on how to make the panel? I'm thinking
fiberglass or aluminum. I am getting rid of the old panel in hopes I can
simplify the layout so it's more user friendly.

Thank you very much for your help in advance.
