Are you sure he's talking about Solid Works? That's a 3D CAD
and modelling tool. I'm trying to imagine how a presentation
about registering an aircraft might be delivered using that
 tool.

Sounds like Ill stick with the venerable VW. The 0200 is a
 good engine and
a good midtime one can be had reasonably.

I would be interested in the boat with the Diehl gear or
just the gear. Do you have a price in mind for either of

While we're on the subject of electronic devices - I ought
 to mention
something I bought recently.? It's been around since at
 least 2005 on
 various platforms and with ever-increasing
 capabilities.? It runs on full
Windows, not CE or Mobile.? Until recently there
 haven't been any decent
Windows tablets around so the company (AviationSafety - also
 called True
Flight and Flight Cheetah) put together some proprietary
 Windows boxes
with several different displays over the years.? It was
 always too bulky
and too expensive for me, but I did admire the
 capabilities.? Finally
there are some 8-inch Windows Tablets around.? True
 Flight is featuring
the DELL Venue 8 Pro that came out in early 2013.? The
 Lenovo Mix 2 is
another contender - the software will run on any of
 them.? The trick is
to find something bright enough to see in a canopied
 cockpit.? The DELL
DV8 Pro has been upgraded a couple times since it first came
 out but nits
are still 400, same as the iPad.? And I can't see a
 damn thing on the
iPad unless it's in the shade, so as with my little
 Anywheremap navigator
I've been using for ten years I'll put a shade on it or
 figure something
else out.? I haven't gotten to the "mounting" part of
 things quite yet -
just doing a lot of thinking about it.?

Flight Cheetah is a lot cheaper these days.? The entire
 package,
software, plates, Sectionals, Vector graphics, Landsat, etc.
 can be had
for $195.? It's hardly ever discussed on the various
 forums since the
iPad has eaten everyones' lunch but those who have it have
 been using it
for years and wouldn't give it up if you paid them to.?
 The developer
keeps the data current and is always adding new tweaks and
 features.
It's mature.? And neat as hell.?

Rather than go on and on about the great features of this
 software I'll
just post the link and those interested can get as deeply
 into it as they
feel like.? There's a series of "Instructional Videos"
 on the site, using
hardware that the company no longer uses but software logic
 and features
 are generally the same.?

The MAIN thing I am impressed with is, without using AHRS
 (although you
can attach one, along with ADS-B), the software provides
 synthetic vision
and HITS and will guide you through boxes all the way to the
 runway
threshold, using just GPS.? This feature is called an
 "approach overlay".
You do have the actual charts but this program will guide
 you all the
way through an approach visually, without having to actually
 look at the
chart except to establish your MAP or MDA and brief
 yourself.? Once you
pick your IAP you never need to look at anything else.?

Something else I like is it has a complete set of Landsat
 images that
shows you what's below those clouds or at night.?
 Your're basically
positioned directly above Google Earth.? If not within
 range of a runway,
this will at least allow one to pick a flat spot instead of
 a mountain to
touch down in case of engine failure.?

There's a lot to rave about when it comes to the features of
 this
software but I'll shut up about it and just post the link
 below.? ?

 Chris
The whole deck is the way to go. Antenna mounts, AHRS,
transponder, ELT, ADS-B, remote temp, .plus a whole lot
of dirt ends up back there. Many things that you think that
you will never want will all need a home whether it is under
the hood or the turtle deck it sure is easier to install and
maintain after the fact when you can get to it.

Although I have a removable front deck and a removable
 custom-built 17.2
gallon fuel tank and can get to my brake cylinders very
 easily, Ken
Cottle attached plastic tubes to each reservoir and ran them
 through the
firewall and capped them.? To bleed the brakes one
 could just open the
bleed valve at the wheel and pour in brake fluid through the
 tubes on the
engine side of the firewall.? I didn't see the need to
 use those tubes
and having a possible mess on the floor around the
 reservoirs so I
disconnected the tubes and capped the inlets and they're
 still there . .
.maybe the next owner might want to use them.? I never
 saw the need.
I've bled the brakes once or twice in ten years and just did
 it when I
had the tank out.? The deck comes off and the tank
 comes out with no
trouble at all so anytime I need or want to do anything back
 of the panel
or down by the rudder pedals I just take them off and
 out.? I've never
had any leaks with the Rosenhaun brake reservoirs.?

I guess that iEFIS you're mentioning Mark must be the MGL
 unit.? I think
you've expressed some unhappiness with their
 electronics.? They come from
South Africa so I'd like to think it's good stuff . . . they
 do good work
down there . . . but I guess not so much

Is there any downside to moving to the 94mm cylinders vs
92mm's?? My son?s project currently has the 92x82 for
2180cc.? I can move to 94x82 for about the same cost as
sticking with 92x82 in an upcoming rebuild.

I?ve read that the 94mm cylinders are preferred because they
 are thicker walled.?

I am considering a pretty serious rebuild of the HAPI engine
that came with my son?s KR project.

Specifically, we are intending to replace the crank and prop
hub (with GP Top Bug and Force One), cylinder heads (with
?), alternator with GP, and cylinders with nikasil?s (not
 the LN Nikies).

Since the case will have to be machined to accept the Force
One prop hub, shouldn?t be too much more to machine for the
 94?s.

 Cheers,
 Owen

Several of us are running 94mm cylinders on the Corvair with
 no problems at
all.? You'll probably go through at least two sets of
 VW heads before you
need to touch the pistons/cylinders.? They are well
 proven.? I put 550 hours
on a set in N56ML and they still look great and have great
 compression.

I've built two GPASC engines (and torn them both down
 several times for hub
issues), and if I were going to build another VW, I'd use
 the Revmaster
crank and prop hub setup instead.?
