That 2012 Mt. Vernon Gathering was perhaps the last one where we had
what's left of the early KR movers and shakers.  Dan Diehl, Jeannette,
Steve & Linda Bennett, Ken Cottle, Glover, Jim Faughn, Dan Heath, Mark
Jones.  I know I'm leaving out a few names of the early KR people who
attended that Gathering but my memory isn't serving me well.  I think
Tommy Waymack was there along with Virgil Salisbury and others.  In that
picture Ken Cottle is standing second row to the right next to the KR-1?
he built that has served me so well.  This KR incidentally is the one
used in Dan Diehl's wing skin installation video.  It was Dan in fact
that bestowed upon it the designation of "KR-1?".  I think that was the
last of the truly great KR Gatherings simply because some of those who
attended that one won't be attending any more.  

It's been miserably hot and humid in SoCal since I got back from Oregon
and except for a quick 45 minute trip to Big Bear a few days ago I've
just been hanging out in front of the fans reading old KR newsletters. 
It might surprise some to know that Dan Heath and Mark Jones have been
building KR's since 1990 or before.  Jones has built at least two and Dan
two, maybe three?  I was also amazed to find Russ Barnett's little jewel
of a KR that took top honors in 2012 . . . amazed to find a picture of it
in a newsletter from the early 90's!  Eh?  Russ brought that KR in on a
trailer to the 40th Anniversery Gathering in 2012 and I thought it was a
new build.  It was the most meticulously perfect-in-every-detail KR I'd
ever seen - something to be featured behind glass at Cartier or
Abacrombie & Fitch.  I'm wondering now if it's ever flown.  It's been
around a lot longer that I thought, that's for sure.

We can sure learn a lot from the old newsletters.  There's a newsletter
dated 1991 with an article by Jerry Price who, with one of his pilot sons
Ian, attended McMinnville.  We did a prop balance on his Stinson 108. 
The history in these newsletters is priceless, as is the KRNET archive
with its truly excellent search function.

I took quite a few pictures...so many that it will take a while to sort 
them out and turn them into a web page, but I'll try to get that done in 
the next few days.  As for awards, they were mostly split between Jeff 
Scott and Kim Niebauer, although there are definitely some honorable 
mentions, such as Roger Bulla's newly minted plane.  They were all very 
close in terms of quality.  I also got air-to-air shots of all the KRs 
visiting (except for Mike's...he was not around for that), and we owe 
John Bouyea for that photo opportunity.

It was a well-done Gathering. Many thanks to Dan and John for pulling 
off a great Gathering.

I haven't done anything regarding the Gathering photos because we've 
been riding around Oregon and Washington national parks for the last 
week, ending up with Mt St. Helens "national monument" yesterday.  That 
was quite interesting.  It had recovered amazingly well from the photos 
I remember from the news way back in 1980...just gray moonscape with 
zillions of tree trunks laid out like match sticks...all pointing away 
from the blast zone.  It looks a lot better now, and it's good to see 
how nature manages to recover from that kind of event.  More on that 
(much later) when I do a web page on that vacation...

For the few of you that are old enough to remember the last century, I made
a discovery this weekend while searching through the basement for old
photographs.  A while back someone had asked about Don Beachum's retract
system.  I knew that I had taken some shots of his plane at a KR Gathering
in a previous century.  Over the holiday break I got the machine from my dad
to convert film to digital images and went hunting for the photos of Don's
plane.  I haven't found those photos yet but I did run across photos from
the 1986 Tulsa, OK KR Gathering, the 1988 and 1989 Covington TN KR
Gatherings, the 1990 Rough River State Park KY KR Gathering, and the 2001
Pine Bluff AK KR Gatherings.  These photos have been uploaded to
krgathering.org.  They have been added to the links at the bottom of the
home page.  You can scroll down to the bottom to find them.

You will see that there is a note asterisked (*) to these links stating:
"Photo quality for these Gatherings (1986 through 2001) are not too good.  I
found the photos in a box in the basement in 2010 and converted them to
digital images from the original film.  It might be good enough to jog the

Hello KR-Netters,

I have been quiet over the last many months, mostly due to job and location
change. I recently moved from Rhode Island to Western Pennsylvania, Beaver
Falls to be precise. I now saw on the worldmap Glenda took a photograph off,
that there is a pin right smack in the middle of Pittsburgh. I'd be
interested to learn who is in the area, to get some more ideas what to look
for before I finally get started on mine.

Nice to hear that everybody had a lot of fun at the gathering; now that I
moved half way there I hope that I can make it next year.

Anybody know a cheap source for a 1156 LED bulb in Green?  I can buy  the
red
ones locally for about $9 but yet have been able to locate a green one -
for
nav light assy that I am making.

I assume you're talking about the Gathering video and not Gathering
photos.  There are many photos already posted on the net.  The
"Bob" you're referring to is Video Bob and he will announce when
the video is completed.

As for the bulbs, I too would like to get a green, red, and white LED
lamp assy at a reasonable (read cheap) price.

OK, I'm a little late with these, but my Gathering photos are at
http://www.krnet.org/mvn2004/ .  You'll be happy to know that I only
published about a fifth of the 700 that  I took!  And if you think the
quality of the photos isn't so great, it's because they are reduced and
compressed by an average factor of 120x, so the slow modem guys won't choke
on them.

It was a great Gathering, and I'm really looking forward to next year's
event, when several more of us "next generation" KR flyers will be flying
in...

happened over 5000 miles away.
I am in the UK, over in East Anglia, almost as far away from the US as 
you can get in England.
Question:- Are there any/many KR2S builders in the UK, as I am looking 
into this as a possible project.
The problem seems to be (apart from the restraints of the CAA/PFA) that 
all material has to be sourced from the States. This means that timber 
for example cost almost as much for shipping/delivery as it does to buy.
Anyway, good luck to all you existing builders, and may the space 
between your bum and the ground never reduce faster than you intend

Hi, Terry!

There are a couple KR2 builders in the UK. One of them surprised us all 
when he launched in a world tour with his KR. Went all the way to 
Australia, despite an awful lack of preparation.
You don't have to import everything from the States, far from it. Here in 
France, I know one guy who built everything from scratch, except for the 
canopy, using only locally available supplies. As far as timber is 
concerned, I am fairly sure there are sources of aircraft grade timber 
near  you, since a lot of wooden aircraft are being built in the UK. Just 
contact the PFA and ask a few builders / rebuilders what kind of wood they 
use, and where they buy it.

Thanks for the feedback Pat.  I'm glad you all can view the photos.  

A few comments;
* I organized the photos.  If I got anything miss identified, let me know
directly please.
* Steve Bennett told me even with the Ellison on TOP of his engine, it runs
fine up to 2100 - 2200 RPM just on "gravity" feed.  He said the air flow
through the Ellison causes sufficient draw for the fuel.  The engine
stumbles (too lean) if the engine turns faster without the normally
available fuel pump pressure.
* Steve has 2 air boxes in his configuration; the carb heat box and the
mandated Ellison plenum.  It is fed by a simple scoop on top of his cowl.
* I am amazed at how many people are running straight ram air into their
carb/ injector/ throttle body intakes!  I fly off a grass strip so I'm glad
I got all those photos of engine installations.
* I was taken by the Jabirus engine's appearance.  I was blown away by Ken
Thomas's climb rate!  He's a BIG guy (I'm just a 188# 6'2" pipsqueak next to
him!)
* It was great to see the difference in the multiple styles of canopies.  It
really made it easy for me to appreciate the variety available.

Boy, I can't wait for Mark to get his pictures posted!
