The problem is. I fly fast. I fly with big engines. I fly at night and I fly IFR. So that leaves LSA's sitting on the side with the RC's for me. I worked very hard for my license and my ratings to let some wanna be doctor in Oklahoma City tell me I can't fly. So I went though hell and back with every test and procedure they wanted me to do so they couldn't say no. Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618-406-4705 PS: Sorry about the rant. My wife called me and said I got a letter from the FAA. I finely got my medical certificate. It's a one year but that's fine. Now I can build my plane and not have that thought in the back of my head that I my not even get to fly it. For right now I can go rent a $125.00 an hour 172. : ( Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618-406-4705

As some of you may know, I have had my KR2 for sale and the reason for the sale was due to the unfortunate demise of my marriage a few years ago, and the loss of my job several months ago. However, I did not want to sell my KR. I had lots of interests in my plane. lots of tire kickers but when it came right down to it, most probably just didn't have the funds to buy it. Last Monday, a trade deal involving a project plus cash came to me for a partial trade of a Dragonfly plus cash to buy my KR2. This came at a time when my personal funds have gotten to the point of being almost desperate to make some sort of deal. Well, as it turns out, the deal was just not something I could do. I just could not give my plane away in trade for something of such questionable construction quality and unknowns. Then this week, I received an offer of employment. A great offer. OK, so why am I writing this email to the KR group? Well, first I want to say thank you to all of you here who personally encouraged me to tread on. Those of you who shared with me that you had been in my dilemma before and that I could make it. I also wanted to encourage others who may be building or in other phases to let them know to tread on and that this group will help you with technical help as well as awesome encouragement. So, I am re-inspired. I am ready to get past the last four years of challenges caused by personal struggles. Its time to get that plane back in the air and enjoy life. and with a little more luck, Gods help and this forum, I will continue to be a proud member of the KR group. and lousy mechanic. The mechanic of N64KR, that is. (ME). The problem with my Lo to No compression was a very poor valve adjustment. I have stainless valves, and hope that the hour that the engine has run on that bad valve adjustment, did not damage the exhaust valves. I failed to insure that the cam was properly positioned on #1 before starting the adjustment. Both valves were closed and I was at TDC, so I ASSumed that I had it right. Well I must have been 180 off, in fact, I know that I was 180 off. I need to learn to listen to myself. I remember that while I was adjusting them, I kept telling myself that I should have insured that #1 plug was firing in that position. I was also concerned about why they would be so far off as I had just adjusted them before the break-in runs. So many signs and, while I saw them, I did not do anything about them. This could have been real bad and I am not really sure why I did not notice it on my first flight. The engine will now turn 3200 static again and starts and idles properly. I hope to be flying again as soon as I can find some time. When you do your valve adjustments keep in mind that the cam flexes and as you are adjusting one side you are also throwing off the other side. Best go all the way around once then go back where you started and then check a second and third time and readjust as you need to. I just did that on my O-290 yesterday and had some fairly far off ones the second time around and finally had them all correct on the third try. I also found on my VW that it was definitely necessary to readjust them not long after putting the cylinders back on. The cylinder hold down studs stretch and it is necessary to retorque the heads after so many hours and redo the valve adjustment. I don't know the number of hours off the top of my head, but it is in the Great Plains manual. KR> Good-news-bad-news
Netheads, The good news it that after two years of not working on my KR (job changes new business start-up blah blah blah) this weekend I took some acton. When I left off working on N52BL I was finishing up firewall forward so I could take off the engine and finish up the boat. Specifically, this weekend I was trying to finish up the alternator installation. I've got an alternator that will run out of the mag drive of my engine. I've gone with electronic ignition so the mag is no longer necessary. I had already machined the alternator case to fit into the mag drive boss on the back of the engine. This weekend's task was to machine the alternator drive pully so that I could weld on a magnito puck drive from a bad magnito that I got on E-bay for cheap. I had looked up an old KR buddy that built a KR in the late 1980's that had a lathe that could do the machine work on the pully. After several weeks of clashing schedules we finally were able to get together this weekend. The bad news is that I didn't accomplish much. I had ASSumed that the pully was mild steel which we could easily cut down on his lathe. As it turns out the pully is most likely a cast unit that is so hard it wore down a carbide cutting tool on the lathe. We didn't even take .001" off the pully diameter. The alternator shaft is splined so I need to start with a pully that has the correct spline to match the shaft. My wife was a good sport about it, she took me to Jonnie's Pizza last night and bought me two draught Fosters. I cried in my bear and now I feel better. I've learned another way NOT to make progress on the KR. We tried anealing it but that didn't do anything to soften it up. On Monday I'll make a trip to the Alternator Rebuild Shop and see if they can come up with a stamped steel pully that I can get the spline out of but if that doesn't work I'll need to figure out how to make the one I've got softer. Does anyone know of a technique to soften cast steel so you can machine it? Regards, Bob Lee N52BL KR2 Suwanee, GA 91% done only 65% to go!

Well, netters, I get my engine back tomorrow. New rod bearings, heads checked and valves lapped in, and freshly put together. I will finish the assembly tomorrow night and be ready to put her back on the plane on Friday. And, just for grins, I am adding a remote oil filter. Who knows, if it does not leak oil, I might be flying by Memorial day. See N64KR at http://KRBuilder.org - Then click on the pics See you in Mt. KR> Good News again
I just got back from my stress test at NKC hospital and passed again. Needed 159 beats/minute on the tread mill based on my age of 65 years. I had a quad by-pass in 1993. Every year since I've passed the dreaded stre Testt. It's costly, but it's worth it from my perspective. I am feeling pretty good today. By the way I am working on updating my web site with many new pics. KRron
