heating Plexiglass and forming it over a mold would relieve it of all
static stress in its new shape. Be careful when drilling the
mounting holes. It might be better to melt the holes with a small
soldering iron. Slightly oversized would be good with the hold down
screws not too tight to allow a slight bit of expansion /
contraction. Both my flat wrapped lenses have performed well for 500
hours now.

I don't post much, but I read it all. I found lights that look like they will
work great for landing lights. They are a little more expensive than some of
the fog light assemblies others are using. But they are low power LED's
similar to AeroSUN Landing Lights, just a lot cheaper. I bought 2 - 1000 Lumen
lights for $180. A link to the company is below. I haven't received them yet.
But if anyone is curious to how well they work let me know. And I will do
some follow up emails when I get to test them.

2010-11-04 Thread Clayton Williams
On my kr there is a pull-push handle not unlike a throttle control that
moves the landing light up and down, it is also set up with a high and low
beam. Just a thought, its lighter than a motor would be and is completely
adjustable.

With a little engineering you could use a motor from a car mirror and make
it adjustable for taxi and landing.

All,

I have not been following super close so apologize if already mentioned.

The new LED landing lights are expensive but SUPER small and rugged. I have a
friend that installed one that is a small rectangle shape and puts out a gob of
light (I know that is pretty imprecise). I would go that route if doing this
myself.

With proper fairing in of the light no matter where they are
mounted, be it gear leg , wheel pant, belly of the fuselage, leading edge of
the wing. They could be made to follow the flight path of the plane with a
microswitch and motor similar to the one used to set and adjust the trim tab's
on some of the KR's that are flying. Once set the beam of light would follow
the flight path of the plane and auto adjust to flight attitude within the
given ability of motor travel used. Which if memory serves, in some was the
electric mirror adjusting motor from car's and truck's.

There is another method which I have heard of but not seen in action so this is
just a maybe you want to try this. Landing light/taxi light is on a
counterbalanced pivot so that it stays at the same angle relative to level. If
the light is angled slightly downward when the counterbalance is level it will,
in theory, stay at that angle relative to the ground no matter what the angle
of the aircraft relative to the ground. In theory it should automatically stay
pointed toward the runway. I saw this in an old EAA magazine and do not know if
anyone ever used it but I think it is an interesting idea of you can work it
out.

I was faced with the same dilemma, where to put them? Anywhere in the
leading edge of the wings would be ideal but I didn't want to cut into
the very nice Diehl wings. I thought of the wheel pants and I thought of
fairing them in right where the gear legs meet the fuselage, but I ended
up putting them in the belly board. I aimed them at night with the plane
a little nose down and they've worked fine. I wish they were strong
enough to see 1000 feet down the runway but they'll do. The main thing
they are good for is taxiing at night without running off the edge of the
taxiway at strange airports or hitting some runway debris.
