KR> Removable turtle deck

2015-05-25 Thread Sid Wood
My turtle deck is removable. 24 flat head screws into nut plates in
aluminum angle bent to match the curve and attached to the longerons with
AN3 bolts hold it in place. Removal time is about 10 minutes. Mine is a
slightly modified RR factory part.

Its the back half off a Piel Emeraude, but turned around to make it a bit
slicker.

I am at last getting on with it having got the approvals for all my mods and
the Jabiru.

Just done the toe brakes, thanks for the design on your website, Mark.

Just about to start on the firewall forward. I have bought a piece of 0.5mm
grade 1 Titanium for the firewall to keep the weight down.

Hi Paul

I have made a removable turtle deck see www.peterskr2s.co.uk.
It has 6 2024 ally lugs cast in the fibreglass which will have nutplates
on. They are fixed by screws from the outside.
It means that access to the rear of the fuselage is so much easier. Note the
sexy shape of canopy and turtle deck!

Removable turtle deck would be nice and could save you a lot in the future, but
I think that having a removable forward deck is much more important, not to say
that both are not a good thing to have as Mark has already shown that it is.
However, I have never seen any other than Marks'.

KR> removable turtle deck and silicon seal ...

2011-05-18 Thread Donald Greer
If it hasn't already been mentioned,

In many circles the seal you are describing is known as a 'form-in-
place' seal. Working on military aircraft myself, we sometimes use
tricks like wax paper, tape and even plastic wrap. More commonly, we
use a spray-on Silicone Release Agent. Assures a perfectly formed
seal, cleans up very easily with iso-propanol and won't interact with
sealants.

My two cents worth,

I have some questions about whether or not to build my TD removable.
For those that did, have you found it useful? Is it worth carrying that
extra weight in the tail to do so?
For those who didn't, have you been able to maintain your aircraft without?

I have a complete removable forward and Turtle deck. No crawling under dash
or peaking through inspection holes.

The turtle deck comes completely off in a few mins. I removed it at the
Natfly a few weeks ago in Temora and bystanders could not believe their
eyes. (thanks Mark L for your ideas).

I can do a complete inspection in mins. WOULD not be without it. I am doing
same on my current project.

I did not make the whole turtle deck removable. I created an access hatch just
ahead of the vertical stab. It is simple a portionof the td that is removable.
Some screws hold it onto the top longeron. It allows access to the very rear
and the panel behind my head was cut to allow access from the front.

The forward deck that Mark is talking about is very practical and doable
just as he describes. He could , if he desired, still have built a fuel tank
integral with the deck and have that easy on/off with simple disconnects
for the fuel line. Did I misunderstand,... the turtle deck is the rear deck
is it not?? And you would like to consider an easy on/off arrangement? Also
doable but easier and stronger yet might be a simple access panel located
near the tail wheel. A fixed rear deck adds a measure of strenght and
dampens any torsional or twisting movement of the tail section.

It's incredible useful! Complete access to modify or troubleshoot anything
behind the panel, and I can access it within five minutes, which involves
only removing the top of the cowl (2 minutes) and the top deck (three
minutes). Total weight consists of two feet of aluminum piano hinge and a

Larry,

My turtle deck is removable using a single piano hinge the length of the
deck on each side. I think it's a good idea in the event you have
maintenance in that area i.e.: flight control cables. Mike Meyer also has a
removable fwd deck, I liked it so much I'm going to do the same. As a
Mechanic of 20 years I can imagine the KR is a tough acft to work on unless
you build in access.

The removable turtle deck that Neil Bingham built had some small alumn.
angle bonded or screwed or both to the longeron. The angle was inset just
enough for the turtle deck to fit against it and be flush with the fuse.
There were nut plates riveted to the inside of the angle every 3or4 inches
and the screws he used were counter sunk into the fiberglass. Neil said it
took 20 minutes or so to remove it but he said it was worth it the fist time
he dropped a tool that would have been almost impossible to get to without
