Re: KR> test

2021-02-01 Thread George via KRnet
I hear  you,  Paul.  It happens to a lot of us at one time or another.
In my case when younger.   It can be hard to rise above it all but
my best advice is don't quit on yourself.   Don't be in a hurry to find
another woman to spend your life with, either.  It will either happen
naturally  or not at all, and either result is OK.   Do all  you can,
but do not kill yourself in the process as there is only one of you in
this world.    Take it day by day and try to put it all in perspective
when you have a chance to relax.  Get plenty of rest and take vitamins
to fight off Covid and other health issues.   For Covid you might try
vitamin C, D3 and zinc - and don't forget to eat good food.   Above all
for now at least do not watch political TV and take the big media news
as mostly opinions to be ignored.  Try to listen to music you like instead.

This unqualified and strictly amateur advice has kept me going for 90
years, but always take anyone's advice for what it is worth TO YOU.
Ignore any of it as you see fit at the time.

I thought  you were doing long haul trucking??  No matter, just
wondering about the life work change.  None of my biz so don't answer,
please.

George    - a far away fellow male, and one who cares how the rest of us
men survive and enjoy life as best possible

Well.. last Saturday I had enough nerve after practising much taxing and a
little high speed taxi to pull back on the stick and fly my KR2S for the first
time it was an awesome feeling until I went to Land for the first time and it
bounced on me And I did a go around the second approach it’s much better and I
had a nice safe landing, since Saturday I’ve been practising my take offs
overshoots and landings not straying too far from the airport, very happy with
the performance of this aircraft and the way it flies.

Re: KR> Test Flight #5 - Phase 1

2019-11-15 Thread Jeff York via KRnet
Sid,

I to am sorry to hear about this. I can not imagine the thought of having
so much time and effort into both the building and the physical and other
efforts to get back to flying status only to have this happen.

I was very impressed with the thorough detailed report you gave on this in
your email. I say this with respect as I believe pilots ( at least me for
sure) can learn far more from you then those who have never experienced
this before. Now it makes me want to go through and look at my inspection
in far more detail and to look at engine mount / nose gear structure welds
very thoroughly. It also makes me think of how difficult it can be to
inspect a weld and see if there are any cracks.

I hope its ok that I say this. But, in what I believe you can teach all of
us, nearly all pilots, I think seeing a presentation and discussion of this
at any aviation forum including a gathering would be incredibly helpful and
informative.

KR> Test Flight #5 - Phase 1

2019-11-14 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Good news and bad news: After standing down for three and a half years for
medical issues, those are done; BasicMed cleared to fly. During that time I
installed mods to correct CG issues, RevMaster oil cooler, fuel pump and oil
pump, new main gear legs, wheel fairings, electric flaps, welded aluminum
fuel tanks, moved the Great Plains 2180 VW forward 2 inches (Jim Faughn),
new brake pedals (Larry Flesner), new engine cowl and converted to
single-place operation. Here is the narrative for test flight #5 made on
November 6, 2019:
The aircraft is a KR-2 N6242 EA-B, built from vendor plans by myself. This
model is generally acknowledged to be responsive in handling
characteristics. The aircraft is in Phase I flight test. This event was
the fifth flight. Modifications had been completed to mitigate aft CG
issues found in the first four flights. The cockpit had also been modified
to convert from two-place side by side to single-place for better
ergonomics. Fuel onboard measured 6 gallons right tank, 7 gallons left
tank. Total capacity is 15 gallons. Weather conditions: clear sky,
visibility greater than 10 miles, wind from the south at less than 5 knots
resulting in a direct crosswind component, gusts were 0 to 5 knots, windsock
favored using runway 29. Takeoff had no issues. Climbed easily to 2500
feet to the practice area 5 miles north of K2W6. Explored handling
characteristics. About 5 knots prior to each stall, got some slight
airframe buffet and elevator stick shake. Determined power off stalls to be
57 knots clean and 52 knots full flaps, no indication of wing drop. Shallow
and steep turns up to 45 degrees bank did not require rudder input for
coordination, as expected. All air speeds are indicated. Level cruise
speed was 124 knots at 2500 feet and 3000 RPM using a 52x52 wood prop. OAT
was 16 degrees C.
Returned to K2W6 and entered the 29 pattern cross wind at 1000 feet MSL.
Wind sock favored runway 29. Made radio calls for inbound, cross wind, down
wind, left base and final. There was no other aircraft traffic either on
the ground or airborne. The plan was to make two touch-and-goes and then a
full stop. This would be the first use of flaps for landing N6242. My first
approach using full flaps was at 65 knots, but to high over the threshold,
so executed a go-around. Down low under 50 feet AGL the crosswind required
a slight crab and also had some light gusts. The next full flap approach
crossed the 29 threshold at about 30 feet AGL and 65 knots. About 2 feet
AGL a sudden gust picked up the left wing just as I attempted to take out
the left crab. I countered with left roll and right rudder. Both inputs
were over-controlled and PIO started. The aircraft impacted the runway for
a hard landing in a level attitude. Rollout was tracking on the runway
centerline for a few seconds before the nose started a gradual uncommanded
pitch down. Full aft stick would not stop the pitch down. The prop
impacted the runway and yawed the nose to the left approximately 30 degrees.
Now sliding on the nose, the aircraft was heading in a straight line for the
left edge of the runway. Main gear wheels were functional. Right rudder
and braking was nil. As the nose impacted the grass, the aircraft yawed
quickly to the left in a ground loop. The right main gear collapsed and the
right wing tip scrapped on the edge of the runway. Total turn for the
ground loop was about one fourth of a turn. The aircraft stopped off the
runway pavement edge.
Before securing the aircraft I made a radio call to alert any other aircraft
that my aircraft was blocking the runway. When I shut off the ignition, the
engine stopped and the jagged stub of one wood prop blade suddenly appeared
over the cowl. A construction worker from the taxiway re-construction job
site was the first responder. I was not injured; seat belts do work. I
assisted the airport manager and the Skytech FBO personnel with a runway FOD
walk down picking up prop splinters and bits of fiberglass. The nose gear
was found about ten feet from the aircraft in the grass at the runway edge.
The collapsed right main gear leg was still attached to the aircraft. Perry
Benshoof, Washington FSDO, responded to the incident and authorized movement
of the aircraft. Skytech personnel used a fork lift, helicopter dolly and a
tractor to retrieve the aircraft and put it in my hangar at K2W6. Flight
time was 0.8 hours.

My insurance company Global Aerospace, Inc. declared the aircraft a total
loss. They now own N6242 and are going to sell it for salvage. Contact
Adam Martz, 913-749-0261. The center main spar is cracked due to the right
main gear collapse. I have a detail list of damages and equipment list if
you may be interested for salvage. Contact me off line.

The FAA Washington FSDO determined the cause of the incident was a nose gear
collapse. The gear leg stub indicated a prior stress c

Re: KR> test run

2017-11-14 Thread Mac McConnell-Wood via KRnet
Hello Stef,
As a long retired KR2er ,I recall my first flight.
Engine cooling on the ground runs was fine-run for 1/2 hour-no probs. So I
take it on first flight. - notice in the climb the temps start to rise.
Level out at top of climb and temps return to normal. Decide to go to my
home field
 which has a longer strip.
Overhead ,I reduce speed-flaps down and join downwind . Temps start to rise
againJoin base leg and the Revmaster quits.
I have to dive to get over inconvenient trees. Flop her in and broke prop.
To rectify cooling probs :
1. Change oil to recommended Revmaster grade.
2.Fit an adjustable cooling exhaust flap.
3 Enlarge inlets.
Don't know which of these were relevant -but never had any more problems.
But don't rely on ground run cooling figures!
Good luck,
Mac ex G-BVZJ

Yes, you do. Equal and opposite reaction thing, if there's a propeller
on it (and I assume there would be to check cooling). I personally
would not bother with this. The engine will run much cooler in flight,
so if you optimize the cowling to run cool on the ground, you'll have
way too much cooling in flight, and way too much drag. More than
likely, it will cool just fine in flight, and if not, modifications will
likely be limited to baffling (or plenum) and the lower exit area of the
cowling, which will not be noticeable. I'd finish the thing before you
get too old to fly it...

KR> test run

2017-11-14 Thread Stef den Boer via KRnet
Hi guys,

I need to have a final check from you all. This weekend (if the wether is ok) I
planned to do a ful power run with my engine.

I made a trolley with a fake firewall. I can remove the wheels from the trolley.
I want to use a tree with a cable behind it. But do I need te be aware for the
trorqe of the engine? I can make a wooden pine 2x3 inch and screw it to my
trolley about 20 ft lengt? is the enough or do you all say you are stupid to do
it.

I want to do it, because i want to know that the temp in cowling and engine is
oke, If this is oke i can sand and spray my cowlings. If the temp is gettiong to
high i need to modify it.

http://www.masttotaalconcept.nl/kr2/styled-27/index.html

On the lower part you have a bit idea from the trolley.

Just so you all have something to read...

I finished my GRT EFIS Sport installation in my Mustang 2 last week
(pretend I said KR and it will feel like a KR post). I knew that it
would be a good system based on what I have seen of EFIS capability, but
I was completely taken by surprise by just how impressed I would be with
it. After flying with it for 15 minutes I loaded a synthetic approach
to a local airport and flew it almost to the runway. I was in VFR
conditions and I was looking outside to make sure that I would not hit
anything or anybody, but it was apparent that if I was inadvertently
stuck in IFR with 50' ceilings that I could have most likely landed
safely as long as I trusted the instrument. I have just increased the
safety factor of my flying by a huge margin. Once I put in the
autopilot servos and the ILS I will have more capability than many
airliners.

For those with limited panel space they also have a new mini system with
most of the capability of the Sport (but will not do the engine
instruments on the same screen) starting at $995. Much more capability
than a Dynon D-10A, just a hair bigger, and less than half the price.
If you have a plane you need one. Nuff said.
