[Bug 1770044] Re: plasmashell crashes on login - so I can't use my desktop system.

2019-11-15 Thread vmagnin
The bug is still present in Kubuntu 19.10 (KDE Plasma 5.16.5), and it
appeared two years ago in Kubuntu 17.10.

I have reinstalled the package print-manager on my notebook to install a
new printer, but I was obliged to remove print-manager after plasma
crashed when trying to print as the Wi-Fi was off.

Note that without the print-manager, I can not add printers but I can
still print on already installed printers. So you can install print-
manager each time you need to manage a new printer then uninstall the
package.

[Bug 1770044] Re: plasmashell crashes on login - so I can't use my desktop system.

2018-05-30 Thread vmagnin
I first encountered that bug when installing Kubuntu 17.10 on my HP
Zbook. I found a turnaround (see below) but the bug reappeared today
after upgrading to Kubuntu 18.04.

The segfault appears in libkcupslib.so, which is in the print-manager package:
$ apt-file search libkcupslib.so
print-manager: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkcupslib.so

So I removed it:
$ sudo apt-get remove print-manager

After reboot or relogging, plasma is now working.
The problem is that I can't print anymore. And if I reinstall print-manager the
bug is back.

Note that I installed Kubuntu 17.10 & 18.04 on 5 machines, and the bug
appears only on my HP Zbook.

[Bug 1721821] Re: sddm freezes 50 seconds before KDE Plasma starts

2017-10-09 Thread vmagnin
The problem seem to be a "timed out" problem with NetworkManager
1.8.4-1ubuntu1, not sddm.

** Package changed: sddm (Ubuntu) => network-manager (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

2017-10-06 Thread vmagnin
** Description changed:

  I upgraded my Kubuntu 17.04 to 17.10 four days ago.

  My PC is booting fast: ~10 seconds to see the greeter. But when I
  connect to my Plasma session, the greeter is staying ~50 seconds at
  screen, before Plasma is starting (in ~10 more seconds). There was no
  problem before upgrading to Kubuntu 17.10.

  I connected to a terminal session just after having entered my password
  in the greeter, and I launched the htop command: all I can say is that
  there is no cpu eating process. The cpu is nearly idle during these 50
  seconds.

@Flames_in_Paradise
I confirm that when I deactivate B-tooth on my laptop, the bug is then present.
And disappears when I activate B-tooth.

I agree that this bug is annoying: it is not critical for someone at
ease with Linux but newbies could run away from Kubuntu... And it is no
chance it appeared one day before the final release !

Flames_in_Paradise,
it seems thought transmission is faster than light ;-)

The fix has solved the problem on two machines under Kubuntu 15.10 64
bits and one machine under Kubuntu 15.10 32 bits (but the CPU is 64
bits). I have no access to the 4th machine this week.

I have also noticed that on a 5th machine, a new laptop, the bug is not
present, probably because it is my only machine with a bluetooth chip.

Waiting for the fix, my workaround is to automatically launch the
Yakuake terminal at startup: by pressing F12 I can access to yakuake and
work in command line, waiting for plasma to be ready. You can then
launch firefox or libreoffice by command line, for example.
