Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Unlocalizable bundled templates
Hi Martin, So, as commented on the issue, here is the abstract of ESC minutes: l10n Update (Sophie) + some people unhappy about the templates - they are not localized + planned for 4.5 (Kendy) + cannot ship 100x each template, the plan is to have the template once, but strings separate (Kendy) + possible to use autocorrect mechanism + go through pootle (Miklos) + will sync with Miklos offline (Kendy) I'll follow-up with Kendy and Miklos on it and keep the list informed. Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Translation of LibreOffice Guides on Github
Hi :) Machine Translators are not perfect anyway. GT might provide a good starting point but then human beings with skills and knowledge need to take over and at least proof-read and modify. I think OmegaT can be used quite happily without using GT or any other MT and the main purpose of Milo's post was to show that OmegaT is an excellent tool for this type of work. The use of GT was just to get to a finished result faster. Please can we try to avoid the often repeated discussions about MTs and GT in particular issue and instead just focus on the main point about using OmegaT to translate the Published Guides? I just downloaded the po zip and extracted to /core/translations/ When i go to language settings and choose Guarani it still gives me the old translation. I can't really figure out how to apply the new one. [libreoffice-l10n] Translation of LibreOffice Guides on Github
Hi, For each LibreOffice component there exists a Guide: XX. The documentation team keeps them up to date, the work on update for LO4.4 has just started. It would be great if we had their translations to as many languages as possible. For this we have developed a workflow, which is based on the OmegaT translation tool and its support for collaborative translation by means of a remote repository. This approach has been tested by translating the Getting Started Guide 4.2 to Slovak. Thanks to OmegaT its update will be now very easy: we will have to translate just the differences. I think that nobody wants to translate a single sentence twice and OmegaT fulfills this requirement perfectly. TDF (Sophie, Norbert and others) has created for this purpose a repository in the Libreoffice space on Github: XX Once a OmegaT team project is set up there, anybody can join the translation process through the OmegaT program - no special knowledge of other programs except for OmegaT is necessary. This is a big advantage. This setup allows even that two translators translate simultaneously a single document. In the Github repository we currently have team projects for fr, de, sk and cs. In this moment we look for administrators for other languages, who would set up the repository for their language and later would organize the translation. Basic set up of one language is also very easy. OmegaT however offers some other options which may significantly simplify and speed up the translation process. This requires some experience - I will be glad to help you. These 'other options' include - creation of a glossary with GUI translations: OmegaT then offers them in a dropdown menu - one does not have to look up these translation in Pootle or LO itself. - reuse of old translation, if you have one. This requires some extra work (alignment of the original and translation) , but pays well off. - machine translation. These are usually not perfect, but still can save a lot of typing. They are offered in OmegaT only as a suggestion, so one and modify them if necessary. - reuse translation of LibreOffice Help Machine translation can be of big advantage if it works. We have used Google Translate for translation between Slovak and Czech versions. I estimate that it has reduced the required time by about 75%. Slovak and Czech are close languages so GT works very well. Maybe that other pairs work well too (english - ??, french - spanish, spanish-italian, slovak-polish, german-dutch etc). I've written a simple script to translate OmegaT translation memory using Google translate (translation memory is an xml file, where OmegaT stores all translated segments). If you want to give it a try, I can translate the English, Czech or Slovak version of the translation memory to your language so that you can check. with best wishes Milos -- email jabber: sramek.mi...@gmail.com -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: l10n+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/l10n/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Unlocalizable bundled templates
Hi Sophie, but it was promised for the 4.4.x series, AFAICR. I think this shows that localizers should never again trust LO developers when they promise something will be made localizable immediately after release, as this immediate future is now a 6 months period - I think we should from now on ask directly for totally localizable features - otherwise they should be blocked/postponed and not rushed into releases. It would help, if you listed what exactly needs localization in your opinion. AFAIK new Impress templates does not contain text. Are you referring to the business letters, business card and English CV templates? I'm not sure, if they fall into same category as UI. Hi Martin, Le 26/02/2015 11:55, Martin Srebotnjak a écrit : Hi Sophie, but it was promised for the 4.4.x series, AFAICR. I don't thin so, new features don't go in minor series. If I remember well, it was said that localized templates would be implemented in minor releases, but the whole mechanism to handle localization correctly has to be developed and will be available for the next major version. If you have localized template to provide, we can discuss it with the UX team. I discussed the template contest with the UX team because I was not happy, just as you are. But instead of blocking the whole thing which was important either for LO and the UX team, I've reviewed the templates and ask for those who are too English to be removed. I'm not completely satisfied, but I can wait until the next major version. I'll ask Kendy today in the ESC meeting where the development of the localization mechanism stands and keep you informed.
