Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Formula names and accents or other signs
Hi! Sophie kirjoitti 2016-09-29 18:53: Following-up on a issue that was open because accents in Formula names in some languages, would it be problematic for your language if we set as a rule to not put any sign in Formula names but the dot (dot) as in en_US? I'm basically fine with removing other separator characters. However for Finnish this needs to be a manual change (not scripted) because we have one case where underscore character is used so that there are two versions of the same function: another with dot and another with underscore: HYPERGEOM_JAKAUMA and HYPERGEOM.JAKAUMA. This messy situation (caused by trying to be compatible with translated names in some old version of Excel) needs to be dealt with first. Would that be too difficult because there is no corresponding meaning without? For FR for example, we decided to remove them but that doesn't change the meaning of the word and it's often that capitals are not accentuated, so people are already used to read them. Accented characters Ä and Ö should be allowed for Finnish. They are also used in formula names in Finnish version of Excel. I fear that removing them would simply be considered a regression by most users. Thanks for asking feedback! It seems that things are a little bit complicated with Finnish Excel. Essentially it does not have this feature directly in the date format implementation but instead they have hardcoded the partitive suffix into those predefined date formats that need it. I tested this by creating a file in Excel and entering a date with different formats. Then I saved it and opened the same file in LibreOffice 3.4.4. The result can be seen in this screenshot: http://www.puimula.org/htp/libreoffice/dformat.png - The predefined format for the date containing partitive month names translates to format string [$-40B]P\. \t\a;@ (P is Finnish format character for day of month and is full month name.). You can see that Excel hardcodes characters "ta" at the end of the month name. This is visible when you open the file in LibreOffice but can also be seen within Excel if choose the format and then go to custom format edit view. There is no direct support for genitive month names in Finnish Excel (thus no predefined formats where day of month precedes the month name), but of course you can create the custom format yourself. So actually the current implementation in Excel matches pretty much exactly LibreOffice 3.4.4 for Finnish. It seems to me that the intelligent month name format would lead to doubled partitive suffixes when a document created in Excel is opened in LibreOffice. We could avoid that by modifying the rule a bit: in case format specifier (or in the Finnish example above) is immediately followed by a character literal, nominative form is used even if there is day of month present in the format. This would also avoid problems with older OpenDocument files where people may have used similar hardcoded suffixes. Even then users who take advantage of the new feature in LibreOffice will see the month names incorrectly if they open the file in Excel. I don't see this as a problem since no data is lost, the formatting problem is minor and it is really just a missing feature in Excel which we cannot fix anyway. Yes. Or more precisely we have 14 forms for month names but these three are the ones that are actually used in date expressions. > Hmm.. I could add also a partitive form to locale data and use that in > the number formatter. Is the rule simply always that if the day precedes > the month the genitive is used, and if the day follows the month the > partitive is used? Well the genitive and partitive need to be swapped here but othewise, yes. So the complete rule looks like this: - If there is no day of month in the format, use nominative form for the month. - If the day is before month, use partitive form for the month. - Otherwise (that is, if the day is after month) use genitive form. These rules are valid even if there are additional words between the day and month. Here are some real word examples of valid Finnish date formats: -> use nominative for -> use nominative for D. -> use partitive for D. "päivä" -> use partitive for D. -> use genitive for D. -> use genitive for D. "päivä" -> use genitive for > I could get that in quite easily if the rule is simply what I assumed > above. It should be as simple as that and definitely a great feature for us. Has anyone checked how this affects interoperability with Excel? Similar problem with Finnish. We need to use genitive or partitive depending on whether the month name comes before or after the day of month. So you can write the date for today either as "marraskuun 19. 2011" (genitive) or "19. marraskuuta 2011" (partitive) Currently this is not much of a problem for us since using spelled (as opposed to numeric) months is quite uncommon. We can also work around the problem by using custom date formats: "n" for genitive and "ta" for partitive month name. This happens to be possible because all month names are inflected from nominative to genitive or partitive with exactly same suffix. This workaround would no longer work if all date formats containing day of month would automatically substitute with genitive form. Thus we probably should not add for Finnish at this point. But the feature is nice anyway and with a small extension (support for partitive forms) could make our date formats much easier to work with.
