[libreoffice-l10n] Handling of auto correct replacement options

2024-03-11 Thread Heiko Tietze
It has been requested to introduce a global replacement tables for things like
--> into the arrow symbol (→). Besides the question whether such character
exists in all fonts, it feels to me that this replacement table is handled by
the local communities. If you have an opinion please join the discussion at

[libreoffice-l10n] WhatsNew dialog on first start of a new version

2024-02-15 Thread Heiko Tietze
If we publish a new version we inform the user via infobar and ask to read the
release notes. Besides the issue of stacked infobars, this information and the
presentation is not really suited for end users. On the other hand, we always
prepare awesome best-of videos, yet not everyone follows us on social media.

The idea is to simply show a dialog with a few images combined with a short
text, arranged in a carousel with next/previous buttons.

The challenges are
a) we have to prepare this shortly before a new version goes into feature freeze
b) the localization of some strings can not start earlier
c) the images occupy a couple of bytes locally but are not used after the first
presentation

If you dislike the idea, please comment on
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159573

Hi Andika,

not sure to understand your question correctly ("is all of my work actually
used" makes me wonder what else could be done with it), but please add those
remarks in the survey. It has a free form question at the end and you could turn
this into a suggestion like "provide more detailed statistics" beyond what
Weblate and https://dashboard.documentfoundation.org/ offers. A discussion on
the mailing list is good but perhaps better when the results are public.

It's a command label. And being overly verbose makes the menu too large. If it
was a dialog we could structure the content to fit the full DnD label.

Thanks for all your input, +Drag it is now.

Fwd: [libreoffice-l10n] Abbreviation for Drag 'n Drop

2024-01-08 Thread Heiko Tietze

Forwarding Martin's message, essentially the same as Mihail's idea.

Would be cool to have a Unicode symbol for DnD, and mouse symbols or a hand
pointer exist but are not for sure represented in all fonts.

Hello, Heiko,

no, in 100+ languages you won't find such a quick fix.

But I wonder if "DnD+Shift" is the correct description? DnD is a description of
a technique, not of the actual process.

Wouldn't "drag+Shift" suffice? That would make it shorter in all languages ...
It is clear that - when you stop dragging and release the Shift key - it drops
(somewhere).

DnD could be mentioned in the tip or help.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Difference between Chapter Numbering and Heading Numering

2023-03-05 Thread Heiko Tietze
Seth is putting a lot of effort into consistent labels and a correct
documentation. And actually I though he added the chapter/heading thing to the
glossary but I cannot find it.

Chapter: Paragraph with a first level outline like 1. or 2.
Heading: Paragraph with any outline level like 1.1 or 2.1

Remember that all headings are just paragraphs, and you make it visually
appearing as heading (plus being part of the ToC and listed in the Navigator,
etc) by changing the outline level from None (or Text Body so far, see bug
153735) to level 1..10. These levels are special bullet and numbering schemes
defined via tools > chapter numbering.

Much of this is work in progress and for an overview see
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=153751

Of course, you all are welcome to comment

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Mistakes in source strings

2022-09-20 Thread Heiko Tietze

In case of "from" it's not so clear whether it should be uppercase.

"Some conjunctions (e.g., but, yet) and prepositions (e.g., over, through) are
capitalized, and sometimes some are lowercased—it depends on the style guide you
follow. For instance, in AP style title case, prepositions of four letters or
more are capitalized. But in Chicago-style title case, all prepositions are
lowercase, no matter their length."

https://www.grammarly.com/blog/capitalization-in-the-titles/

The full line in question is: "Three library containers are shown in the Macro
From list:" - clearly not title style but a reference to a labeled
list. Would indeed have been better to put the term in quotes.

The text is not part of the source code but used in the help.

[libreoffice-l10n] Survey translation

Hello translators,

the design team wants to run a poll about new application icons. These icons
affect the branding and we want to ask the TDF members to decide. Now it would
be nice to support non-English speakers with a localized introduction and the
good-bye message. I've put the few sentences into a spreadsheet at

Please translate if your fellow TDF members needs translation. Deadline is next
Friday - unless more time is need (nothing really urgent, plan is to update for
v8 or so).

Thanks a lot in advance,

Ignoring the accelerator and the colon, this is in a few languages I understand:

I don't know the exact place for this string in order to evaluate myself the context in

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Two options to autocorrect dashes

2021-06-30 Thread Heiko Tietze
The patch to remove the EN/EM DASHES from the replacement table is here
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/117585

It affects --, ---, :--:, and :---:. As well as - for NL. The option replace
dashed still works depending on language and kind of content with EN/EM.

On 29.06.21 11:16, Heiko Tietze wrote:
We have two options to replace -- by EN (or EM) DASH, one in Tools >
Autocorrect: Replace (-- = -), the other at Options ("[ ] Replace dashes"). This

Auto-correction/Replace is defined in extras/autocorr/lang//Documentlist.xml
and turns two dashes into one EN DASH U+2013 for more or less all languages
(grep -R – *), many but not all replace three dashes by EM DASH U+2014 (grep -R
— *). NL and NL_BE replace a single dash by EN DASH.

The "option" replacement is done via SvxAutoCorrect::DoAutoCorrect() at
IsAutoCorrFlag(ACFlags::ChgToEnEmDash) and SvxAutoCorrect::FnChgToEnEmDash(),
which is a rather complex function.

Now I'd vote for removing the option from the replacement table as this is in my
skills but I'm afraid of the triple dash thing / EM dash. At least for me it is
not converted after removing the replacement entry. Removing the code in
SvxAutoCorrect might be doable but could have side-effects.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Localizing "Community Edition" branding in LO71

2020-12-20 Thread Heiko Tietze
The brand string is part of the images. Could be done for the SVG, in theory,
but not in case of the splash screen, which is and has to be raster graphics
(PNG). Well, nothing is impossible in informatics but the effort should be balanced.
But moreover it makes not much sense to translate brand names in general.
"Gemeinschaftsversion" in German sounds totally weird. We had an eye on l10n
while choosing the name so the term is kind of inter lingua, hopefully.
And last but not least, this brand image is not used for any binary version

No, since the Gallery, like some other places, is more kind of a place holder

parts. Also pending the finishing of the migration to the new gallery package

I wanted to ask from the localisation community, do you consider it important to
have these translatable?

Our HIG is here https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Guidelines/SideBar

The deck is what in other dialogs is meant by tab. Or is it the tab
view/content/panel and the tab is only this UI element to switch between Font,
Font Effects, Position etc.? Anyway, you should consider ordinary tab views as
the prototype for the sidebar.

We could also drop the term and just talk about Content Panel(s).

I introduced %MOD1 and %MOD2 for the tip-of-the-day strings to be specific on
Windows/Linux vs. macOS. You can translate, for example, STR_CMD defaulting to
"⌘ Cmd" to something else.

Martin asks in tdf#13079 to revert this patch and to duplicate the full strings
in order to allow cases. Sounds like the wrong way to me and I would like to
get more input first. One point is that I cannot find any example that requires
a case (in German I can always talk about "%MODx-key" and apply the case to
"key").

The full list of strings is here
https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/cui/inc/tipoftheday.hrc

TIA,
Heiko

PS: @Martin: many thanks for looking very closely on every detail. I really
appreciate that even when disagreeing in this particular situation.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Character in LibreOffce UI Master

2019-12-28 Thread Heiko Tietze
It was done in [1] based on the guideline [2]. With LibreOffice it would be
easy to insert this character per special characters dialog, in Weblate you
probably have to use the Unicode ID U+25B8. But copy/paste seems to be easier.

I wonder why this patch has made it into 6.4. Tried to cherry-pick but failed
because of a merge issue (and it was a bit late too). The patch also fixes the
Ctrl/Cmd and Alt/Option thing by using the variables %MOD1 and %MOD2.

[libreoffice-l10n] Addendum: LibreOffice survey translation

2017-08-11 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hello all,

Sophie asked in a previous mail to translate a survey (redmine #2341).
Unfortunately, I forgot to add one question to the spreadsheet and created the
subticket

https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/2341

for that ("For how many years are you a user of LibreOffice and its
predecessor?"). Please just add the translation as comment (bg, cs, es, fr, nl,
zh are needed, and perhaps also it).

Apologies and many thanks,
Heiko

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Re: Translation of the survey on deprecated feature

2017-06-12 Thread Heiko Tietze
Have seen my fault after sending the email. Just overlooked Slovenian
and missed the ML. Sorry for that.

[libreoffice-l10n] Re: Translation of the survey on deprecated feature

2017-06-12 Thread Heiko Tietze
Sent the email unintentionally to Martin only.

Thought the quickstarter is neither available on Linux but it is,
however with limited functionality and buggy on Qt-based systems. The
same is true for postscript printing when you switch off the PDF
option, which actually goes through CUPS (as I was told, not an expert
in this field). Likely the same on macOS.

What we want to know is whether or not users are aware of these
features and make use of it. Knowing that 0.0001% of the Linux users
(n=2 *g*) have tried this vs. 0.001% of the Windows folks (n=10)
brings it not into the focus of development. Of course we will treat
the numbers with care and do not deprecate features just because
people don't know ImageMap anymore, for example.

Thanks a lot to everyone for the translations. So far we have
en,dt,fr,no,bg,hr,cz,it,tr
Would be nice to get also Spanish and Russian.

Cheers,
Heiko
