Jesus: He has dedicated his life to serving himself. That is the

 Minister: But he's a Christian.
Jesus: He is an Old Testament Christian. The ancient Hebrew scriptures
say that God is an angry God, a vengeful God, a jealous God. But he is
not. Nor is he petty, nor vindictive, nor narrow minded, nor
self-righteous. God was not made in our image. He is not insecure or
emotionally immature. God is not like us, but in our better moments we
 can be like him.

Frank, I appreciate the effort to challenge Bush on his Christianity and
his devoutness. But I do want to take exception to a few things here
 (apart
from the references to God as he and him, since even for believers in a
god, god's masculinity should be avoided).

There is no such thing as an Old Testament Christian. Christians are
people who believe that Jesus brought a new gospel that superceded the
 Old
Testament. People who believe exclusively in the Christian-denominated
Old Testament do not call it that, and do not call themselves
 Christians.
They call it the Torah, and are Jews. The ancient Hebrew scriptures
sometimes refer to god as jealous and stern, and sometimes as the
all-merciful, sometimes as the source of all righteousness (which is much
different from 'self-righteousness'). Trying to identify anger,
vengefulness, jealousy, pettiness, vindictiveness, and self-righteousness
with the Old Testament god is a very wrong foot to start out on, to try
to redeem Christianity from the crimes of its advocates and practitioners.

The history of Christianity is replete with Christian warriors, crusades
and holy wars, with emperors claiming divine right and religious and
temporal authorities who practiced forced conversions and the
 execution of
heretics and non-believers. Trying to make these crimes some kind of
hangover or holdover from Judaism is shabby and irresponsible. Judaism
 has
plenty to answer for on its own without having to be held responsible for
the crimes carried out in the name of Christianity.

[LAAMN] Re: [actionla] critique of 3/19

2005-03-21 Thread activism

Was I supposed to be happy about that situation? At the very least, the
organizers showed insensitivity.

Cursing and all, that was how people felt at the time. (Not just me!)
Many of them would probably not bother to submit a critique, but would
simply decide not to attend any more protests.

Be grateful for honesty wherever you find it.

[LAAMN] Book Signing/Lecture on Rabble-Rouser Upton Sinclair

2005-03-21 Thread Michele Welsing

Upton Sinclair scholar and author Lauren Coodley will discuss her new
book: The Land of Orange Groves and Jails: Upton Sinclair's California
at a book signing/lecture on Saturday, March 26, 2 p.m. at Southern
California Library, located at 6120 S. Vermont Avenue in L.A.

Lauren Coodley, a professor of history at Napa Valley College who has
spent a decade studying Upton Sinclair’s life and writings, will
discuss Sinclair’s legacy and sign her new book, Land of Orange Groves
and Jails: Upton Sinclair’s California on Saturday, March 26, 2 p.m. at
the Southern California Library. Copies of the book will be available
for purchase at the event. Admission to the event is free, but
reservations are recommended. To RSVP and for more information, call
323-692-3435. Also check the web at www.socallib.org. The Library is
located at 6120 S. Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles (between Slauson and
Gage).

Coodley’s appearance at the Library is one of three stops on a brief
tour of Southern California. She will also lecture and sign her book on
Thursday, March 24, 7:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Museum of History (470 W.
Walnut St., Pasadena, 626-577-1660, ext. 10, or at
www.pasadenahistory.org) and on Friday, March 25, 7 p.m. at the Los
Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro (Berth 84, foot of 6th St.,
310-548-7618, www.lamaritimemuseum.org).

Novelist and Muckraker

Novelist and muckraker Upton Sinclair, famed for his expose of
Chicago’s meatpacking industry, also wrote a series of entertaining
critiques of Southern California’s oil industry, movie studios, and
urban sprawl—most of which still apply today. The Land of Orange
Groves and Jails (published in December 2004) spans 50 years of
Sinclair’s funny and fiery writings.

Taken together, these plays, novels, articles, and pamphlets show how
Sinclair’s personal life inspired his political activism. When
neighbors in Long Beach struck oil, he wrote about the oil industry.
His father’s addiction inspired an analysis of alcohol distributors. In
1934, he responded to the Depression by running for governor under the
EPIC slogan, “End poverty in California.” The hard-fought campaign that
followed has parallels to our current political world of vicious attack
ads and allegations of voter fraud. He also was a political figure who
understood popular culture better than any of his contemporaries, using
movies and the power of Hollywood to give voice to his ideas.

This quintessential rabble-rouser has found an advocate in Prof. Lauren
Coodley. Beginning with her dissertation, Coodley has spent nearly 10
years studying Sinclair’s life and writings. She organized a panel of
national Sinclair scholars at UCLA and wrote the script for a film
biography. More importantly, she has rethought how we view Upton
Sinclair, both as a Californian and as a writer who turned his own life
experiences into political pop culture.

DETAILS:
Saturday, March 26, 2 p.m. at the Southern California Library, 6120 S.
Vermont Avenue,

[LAAMN] Paul Wolfowitz and the World Bank

2005-03-21 Thread Chris Ellis

The World Bank along with its partner in crime, the IMF are already
notorious for their extortion of nations around to the world into
accepting U.S. style free market policies through draconian
structural adjustment and privatization policies imposed in
exchange for accepting economic aid from these international loan
sharks! How bad is it going to get now that known war criminal Paul
Wolfowitz has been appointed to lead it? The world must respond now
to pull the plug on this global loan shark! Organize your
community, university, labor union to divest from World Bank
bonds-the sales of which are used for this type of international
extortion! See accompanying link to find out more:

[LAAMN] Black media being swallowed up by corporate conglomerates

2005-03-21 Thread Michael Novick

Where's Africana? The End of Black Online Independence
http://www.blackstate.com/blacksites.html
Africana.com the online news and educational website aimed at people of
color recently merged and was subsequently subsumed by AOL Time Warner
becoming a part of AOL's Black Voices channel. Earlier this year the
premiere African American magazine for black women Essence was bought out
by Time Warner.

These examples of two well known black publications being bought by white
owned corporate conglomerates present a problem for the independence of
black media. These along with the selling of BET to Viacom a few years back
leaves very few places where we can control our image in the media
dominated by negative images of black people. The Internet as a media
should be a place where black people can control the news, the image and
the perception but that is compromised when the ownership of the content
changes. How radical can these publications be? Can they speak to corporate
abuse and mistreatment of minorities? Can they criticize hiring patterns
and speak out against employment discrimination?

Earl G. Graves, publisher of Black Enterprise, said that before selling to
Time Warner, the owners of Essence magazine should have allowed Blacks
companies to make an offer to purchase the company. Black owned
corporations like Radio One could have been a great partner in the growth
of Essence. But this mindset is the reason why we as a group do not
succeed. We do not look to each other for growth and opportunity as other
ethnic groups have in the past and present. Robert Johnson sells BET to
media giant Viacom but not a possible consortium of African American
business and media giants like Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, Russell Simmons
and Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs.

Websites that are not white owned and or owned and controlled by the giant
corporate media allows alternative views to what is commonly fed and
repetitively forced or brainwashed into the American psyche by other
news-entertainment companies such as Viacom (CBS, MTV et al.) Disney (ABC,
ESPN, et al.) AOL Time Warner (CNN et al.) GE (NBC), News Corporation (FOX,
DirectTV). Thus the issue over white ownership of African American content
is not a difficult one, it is about who controls the perception, who
controls what African Americans look like, what type of content is fed akin
to information control.

Being free online is about allowing the free flow of thought unfiltered by
an overseer. Africana.com was co-founded in January 1999 by Harvard
University educators Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Kwame Anthony Appiah, along
with Harry M. Lasker III, to enhance educational and economic opportunities
for blacks in America and around the world. However now instead of
exploring black academia, black thought and culture what we have now is the
black version on US Weekly or Entertainment Tonight, discussions about
spring wardrobe and celebrity gossip not exactly the mission of Africana.
But rest assured web audience you still have a place for independent black
political thought. And I don't think as Dave Chappelle says, they are going
to come take me away anytime soon.
