[LAAMN] Video, Oaxaca- A Victory in The Streets- 11/2/06

2006-11-06 Thread Anna Kunkin

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf6H_sxCx3k

(Lo que sigue es una explanación para la gente de habla inglés, para
ayudarles a entender de lo que se trata el video. Si alguin no está de acuerdo
con lo que he escrito aquí, le pido el favor de informarme de mis errores.
  Gracias, Anna)

This video is of the events in Oaxaca on Nov.2 in front of the university of
Oaxaca when the federal police tried to break in and destroy the radio station,
the people's main communication tool to each other, and to the outside world.
The whole town came out to defend and fight back and they won a great victory.
-The voice in the beginning is the voice of radio Oaxaca calling for
citizens to come out and form barricades around the university to protect the
radio station. We cannot allow this important voice to be lost.''

  - Then you see the people responding; creating barricades.

-You will see a man and a woman scolding the federal police, and appealing
to them as fellow Mexicans with families; reminding them that they are no
different than the people in the streets that they are attacking.

  - The doctors making a statement; saying that some of the news media has been
framing the movement  in Oaxaca as being made up of gang members and criminals;
(This framed by shots of the townspeople standing hand in hand to form
barricades)
but, they say, we are doctors; profesionals who are defending our city and
helping the people. Holding up his stethoscope, he says, These are our
weapons. With these weapons we fight and help our people and our compañeros.

  - Then you see a member of the police saying that they have no intention of
attacking the university or of arresting anyone. The lie to this is evident in
the next shot where helicopters are shown dropping tear gas into the
university.

  - Then you see a couragous people; a people fighting together for a just
cause, and in the end, winning. I watch this with tears...and only hope that I
would find the courage to be like these people in the same situation.

On the right of the screen is a list of more videos that you can watch just
by clicking on the links. One of them is the video that came out of Indymedia
reporter Brad Will's camera after he was shot dead in the streets of Oaxaca
last week.

I hope that this little recap helps all my English speaking compañeras and
compañeros to understand the importance of this battle. This is the type of
thing that people in Latin America have been dealing with for hundreds of
years. Our government doesn't want us to know that this is what has been going
on in our name, but now, with modern technology it is no longer hidden from us.

Our tax money is paying for this, and in the cases of the worst brutality and
torture, the perpetrators are trained here in Fort Benning, Georgia at the
School of The Americas. My friend Hector Aristizabal, a torture victim from
Columbia, said that with knowledge comes griefand yes, my tears have
surprised me. But let's let our grief and our compassion work for us to give
us the strength to make change. Let's support our sisters and brothers in their
efforts to create justice in their countries. In doing so we will
create a just world; one in which as Subcomandante Marcos says, Un mundo
donde quepan todos. (A world where we all have a place.)

Please watch this video and pass it on.

  A big abrazo to all,
  Anna

[LAAMN] Complete Voting Recommendations w/judges, propositions, local races

2006-11-06 Thread Ed Pearl
Hi. Here are my recommendations for Tuesday's election.
The majority, originally from Faramarz Nabavi, and several
from identified others. Here's my updated intro, then the choices
and Faramarz' analyses. Many thanks to all who contributed.

I will only add that democracy demands the voice and power of
the public on an ongoing basis. My good rule of thumb is to vote
alternate where either the Dem or Rep is 10pts ahead in the polls.
So, I'm voting Peter Camejo for Governor, Donna Warren for Lt. Gov.,
Jack Harrison Atty. Gen., Marsha Feinland for Senator, and strongly
urging those in the beach cities to vote for Jim Smith, vs Jane Harmon.
Sarah Knopp, a remarkable educator, for State Suprintendant of Educ.
Debra Bowen is very special and in an apparently tight race. I can
think of nobody more needed or capable of changing our corrupted
voting system and our democracy preserved. Other than that, I pray
the Dems will have a Congressional majority, at minimum. Conyers
and Waxman holding hearings can do wonders in exposing, educating
and stopping Bush's not so creeping fascism, our #1 priority in this
election.

Ed

2006 GENERAL ELECTION VOTING RECOMMENDATIONS

Election Day: Tuesday, November 6, 2006
Hours of voting: 7:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M.

VOTING LIST ON TOP
EXPLANATIONS FOLLOW BELOW
SOURCES LISTED AT BOTTOM

NOTE: To the best of my ability, I have listed candidates who are
anti-war/pro-civil liberties for federal office, and for state office who
are not prominent promoters of the death penalty. Third party candidates
are listed in safe seats where the Democrat won by at least 10 points
more than the Republican in the previous race and where the current
Democratic candidate does not deserve to be elected and is not in danger,
with one exception (Treasurer). I have not recommended any candidate I
find strongly objectionable. The recommendations listed here do not
represent the views of any particular organization.

Also, check out my new daily blog at http://faramarz.freeshell.org

[LAAMN] 2006-11-18 Santa Barbara: Son of Rosenbergs

2006-11-06 Thread Uncle Don B Fanning
From: Dick Flacks [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2006 10:56:10 -0800
Subject: [SBProgCoalition] Fw: [socforum] Invitation -- Meet Robert
Meeropol, son of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg

a special opportunity for learning and inspiration!

Meet

ROBERT MEEROPOL

Son of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg Executive Director of the Rosenberg
Fund for Children

Robert Meeropol was six years old when his parents, Ethel and Julius
Rosenberg, were sent to the electric chair in 1953, executed by the
U.S. government after one of the most hotly debated trials in U.S.
history. Now, Meeropol leads the Rosenberg Fund for Children (RFC), a
public foundation he started in 1990. The RFC echoes the support
Meeropol received from the progressive community after his parents'
deaths, by aiding children of today's activists who are living
through similar nightmares to that which he experienced as a child.

Meeropol - now an attorney, activist, author and Executive Director
of the RFC- will discuss the work of the foundation and its
particular urgency in these troubling times. The Fund's work
assisting the children of activists who have been harmed because of
their involvement in progressive struggles, will be the backdrop for
a brief talk about the dangers of the current political climate and
its parallels to the McCarthy era of the 1950s. There will be
socializing too, and a chance to chat with Robert informally as well.

Sat, Nov. 18th, 4:00-600 PM

1930 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara (corner of Anacapa Mission)

Hosted by Howard Winant Debbie Rogow, Dick Mickey Flacks and Beth
Schneider...

Refreshments will be served.

RSVP by Nov.15 to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or to Amber Black at the
Rosenberg Fund for Children at (413) 529-0063.

Tax-deductible contributions to the Rosenberg Fund for Children are
encouraged. Help raise the funds needed to defend families of
political prisoners and targeted activists!

Copies of AN EXECUTION IN THE FAMILY will be available for purchase.

For more information visit the Rosenberg Fund for Children's website
at www.rfc.org.

Subject: November Films at Friendship Manor THE REAL THING! Please
forward to your lists!
Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2006 06:32:48 -0800

Here are the films for November

Come View A timely Film at Friendship Manor
6647 El Colegio, Isla Vista
Friday nights at 7:30 P.M.

November 3
THE BIG BUY

A look at the criminal investigation of Texas Congressman Tom DeLay
on campaign fund-raising charges and his efforts to redraw the
state's Congressional districts.

November 10
THE DEVIL'S MINER

The story of 14-year-old Basilio Vargas and his 12-year-old brother

Bolivia. It is believed that over eight million workers have perished
in the mines since the 16th century.

November 17
NUKES IN SPACE; THE RAINBOW BOMBS

During the heart of the Cold War, the United States and the former
Soviet Union launched and detonated a combined total of over 20
thermo nuclear weapons in the upper atmosphere and near space region
of earth in an effort to test the effects of launching an offense as
well as countering an offense. Even during the Cuban Missile Crisis!

November 24
THE GREAT CONSPIRACY

The 9/11 News Special You Never Saw is a 70-minute sequel to The
Great Deception, the ground-breaking 44-minute video by Barrie
Zwicker, the first mainstream journalist in the world to ask hard
questions, in early 2002, about the official story of the events of
9/11. In The Great Conspiracy, Zwicker analyses the use of fear to
befuddle the public, and deconstructs the so-called war on
terrorism as a public control mechanism. He then examines in depth
the failure of the military to function on 9/11 and the entirely
inappropriate behaviour of the president and his aides that day.
Finally, the resistance of the White House to any proper
investigation, the extreme taintedness of the 9/11 commission and its
drastic underperformance are examined. Throughout, the compliance and
complicity of the mainstream media in maintaining a trance of
ignorance is addressed. And the responsibility of each thinking
citizen emphasized at the end.

Friendship Manor is in the heart of Isla Vista on the corner of El
Colegio and Los Carneros. The event will take place upstairs in
Jaimison Hall near the library and meeting room.

Parking is at the Manor Corner Parking Lot (the entrance is on the
southeast corner of the empty lot at Camino Pescadero and El Colegio,
on the east side of Friendship Manor. The opening is nearly opposite
the west end of Cervantes Road. Do not park in the underground
parking structure! Better yet, walk, bus, or bike to the film.

All are welcome. Suggested donation is $3 - $ 5 or whatever you can
afford. For more information contact Sandy by e-mail
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), or call her at 965-7771

This event is co-sponsored by Campus Greens, Hopedance, Isla Vista
Co-Op, and Veterans For Peace
