Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, is pleased to announce that our chapter in Los Angeles/Orange County will be hosting Al-Jazeera correspondents Ayman Mohyeldin and Sherine Tadros on Sunday October 3, 2010 starting 3 PM at the Embassy Suites Hotel - Anaheim South, 11767 Harbor Boulevard, Garden Grove, California, 92840. The title of their presentation will be Reflections on the Israeli Attack on the Gaza Strip. If you live in Southern California or are simply visiting, come hear first hand from Mohyeldin and Tadros on the human side of the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in 2008, as well their assessment of the current situation in the Gaza Strip in the context of international efforts to break the ongoing siege and the so-called peace process. Their stop in Orange County is part of a multi-city US speaking tour that includes discussions at Columbia University, Georgetown University, University of Maryland, the New America Foundation and elsewhere. On December 27, 2008, Israel's already crippling siege on the Palestinian people of the Gaza Strip escalated into a brutal military attack. Al-Jazeera was the only global news network reporting from inside the Gaza Strip and israel for the entirety of the attack. Throughout Al-Jazeera's reporters Ayman Mohyeldin and Sherine Tadros brought news of the human tragedy unfolding to living rooms throughout the English speaking world. They found themselves as vulnerable as the civilians of Gaza Strip. If you live in Southern California or are simply visiting, come listen to their accounts of what it was really like to report on the attack, as well their analysis of the current situation in the Gaza Strip in the context of international efforts to break the ongoing siege and the so-called peace process. Ayman Mohyeldin is the lead Gaza Strip Correspondent for Al-Jazeera English. He is an accomplished Arab American who reported on the so-called trial of the President of Iraq Saddam Hussein before he covered the December 2008 Israeli Airstrikes over the Gaza Strip. He became the first journalist to report on the intricate network of tunnels that are now a vital route into the Gaza Strip for medicine, food and fuel supplies. Mohyeldin was a foreign news producer in Iraq with CNN (2003-2005). He studied International Politics at American University in Washington D.C. and earned his BA in International Relations with a focus on the European Union. He also earned an MA in International Politics with a focus on Peace and Conflict Resolution. His graduate thesis entitled The News Media Paradigm in the War on Terrorism was recognized and accepted by the International Association of Media Researcher's Conference in Barcelona, Spain (2002). Mohyeldin started his career working at NBC News. Mohyeldin's coverage of major news events include the Iraq War, the first multi-candidate presidential Egyptian Elections in 2005, Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the 2005 Palestinian elections in the Gaza Strip. As a producer, Mohyeldin became the first journalist to enter one of Libya's nuclear research facilities after producing Col. Muammar al-Gaddafi's first interview announcing Libya would abandon all WMD programs. Mohyeldin's work in the CNN documentary Iraq: progress report about the daily struggles of Iraqis during the war was nominated for an Emmy. He served as an associate producer for the NBC News Special that also received Emmy Award nominations for Ship at War: Inside the Carrier Stennis Inside the Real West Wing. He is also known for his coverage of the annual Muslim Pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca and was involved in the production of CNN specials Islam: The Struggle Within and Hajj: A Spiritual Journey. Before his assignment to the Gaza Strip, Mohyeldin reported from across the Middle East, including on sectarian violence in Lebanon, voting irregularities in Egypt, and human rights abuses in the Gulf. Sherine Tadros is an Arab British journalist based in the Arab world. She is a correspondent for Al-Jazeera English based in Doha, Qatar. After obtaining two degrees in politics, Tadros worked for the Al-Arabiya network as executive producer, before joining Al-Jazeera in 2005. During the 2008-2009 Israeli attack on the Gaza

The following provides a brief update on them and some other labor activists. *Mansou Osaloo*, the head of the Tehran and Suburbs Vahed Bus Workers Syndicate received an additional one year term in August for having connections with the illegal opposition groups. This additional one year jail term has been confirmed by a superior court extending his incarceration to six years. *Ebrahim Maddadi*, the deputy head of the Bus Workers Syndicate, has been denied any normal prison breaks despite the fact that he has already spent more than 2 of his 3.5 years in jail. *Reza Shahabi*, another board member of the bus drivers union, is still in jail after more than three months with no official legal case brought against him. Reza Shahabi is suffering from severe back and neck problems. *Alireza Saeedi* and *Behrouz Mollazadeh* of Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane factory have been sentenced to one year in prion each by Dezful revolutionary court in southern Iran. They have been sentenced to offenses against the leadership. The two activists were arrested earlier in January and released subsequently on $70,000 bail. The reason for their arrest was possession of a satirical clip on their cell phones. *Sadigh Karimi*, a board member, and *Foad Keikhosravi*, an activist with the Free Association of Iranian Workers were tried for a second consecutive time by the branch one revolutionary court in the city of Sanandaj on September 22. The two were tried for a second time on the charges of organizing the May Day rally in the city this year, while the same court had already convicted them once on the same charges and they have been awaiting sentencing. The two activists were detained early morning of May 1 and the events took place at 6:00 p.m. on that day. *Asaad Moloudzadeh* of the Coordinating Committee to Facilitate the Creation of Workers Organizations in Iran walked in Oroumiyeh Court on September 13 to start his jail term. He is currently held in ward 12 of that prison. Moloudzadeh was sentenced to five months in prison on June 14 for propaganda against the state merely by membership in the Coordinating Committee. *Ali Yazdani*, a workers activist writing for Workers Rights Center publications has been summoned by the judiciary. The reason for this summon remains unclear. *Rasoul Bodaghi*, a member of the board of the Iran Teachers Trade Association is still awaiting his appeal on a 6-year jail sentence plus a 5-year ban on his social activity passed in August of this year. Bodaghi was arrested last September and has had his salaries cut for the last ten months. *Abdolreza Ghanbari*, the teacher under the death penalty has had his sentence commuted to jail terms. The teacher suffering from acute kidney problem has had recurring bouts of internal bleeding. The prison authorities decline his transfer to hospitals outside the prison system. Abdolreza Ghanbari was arrested on January 2 in Pakdasht Hesar Amin High School by the intelligence ministry operatives and taken to the ward 209 in solitary confinement cells in Tehran Evin prison. He was consequently sentenced to death for Moharebeh (i.e. waging war against Islam) and propaganda against the system. *Abdollah Momeni*, *Aliakbar Baghani*, *Hashem Khastar*, *Mohammad Davari*, and *Esmael Abdi* are other teachers in prison because of their union activities or participation in street protests following last years fraudulent election. --- Nurses Lose Contracts Permanently Due to Improper Dressing recent updates http://iranlaborreport.com/?cat=1 September 27, 2010 0https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/blank_quirks.html#comments According to the general secretary of the the main trade association for Irans nurses, the Nurses House, many of the contracting nurses at Imam Khomeini hospital in Tehran have been terminated by the Gozinesh, or personnel office. [LAAMN] Venezuela: The taking part, Rutten: GOP/'tea' party radicalism
Hi. I had to go to England to find what appears to be decent coverage of Venezuela's election. The LA and NY Times coverage is so slanted as to be propaganda. At the same time, coverage of our own election is rapidly mainstreaming the GOP/tea party lines. I thought it useful to pair these two articles. As yet, neither gray lady has fired colunmists. Ed http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/sep/27/venezuela-election-opposition-politics Venezuela: This was about the taking part The Venezuela election was not a major blow to Hugo Chávez. It shows politics is working properly again By Mark Weisbrot Guardian.co.UK, 27 September 2010 Today's election for 165 representatives in Venezuela's national assembly is significant but unlikely to bring about major change, despite the opposition having done better than expected. On the latest count the pro-government United Socialist party has 95 seats, with 60 for the opposition Democratic Unity, five for other parties and the rest undecided. The opposition claims it won a majority of the popular vote, but apparently it was very close between the two main parties. As expected, most of the international press and its sources hailed the results as a major blow to Hugo Chávez, paving the way for his possible removal in the presidential election in 2012. But this is exaggerated. The vote was widely seen as a referendum on Chávez, and it would be an anomaly in electoral politics if the government did not lose support after a recession last year that continued into the first quarter of this year. Chávez's popularity has always reflected the economy, reaching a low during the recession of 2002-03 - regardless of the fact that it was caused by an opposition oil strike. His approval rating has fallen from 60% in early 2009 to 46% last month. For comparison President Obama's approval rating has fallen from 68% last April to 45% this month, and his party is expected to take big losses in the congressional elections. This is despite him having clearly inherited economic problems from his predecessor. It is not clear why anyone would expect Venezuela to be exempt from the workings of electoral politics. The opposition has most of the wealth of the country - and most of its media. They have no problem getting their message out. Obama also faces a strong rightwing media, with Fox News now one of the most popular sources for coverage of the autumn elections, but there is much less of an opposition media in the US. Much has been made of the opposition getting more than a third of the national assembly, thus being able to block legislation that would deepen the revolution. Again, the importance of this is greatly exaggerated. In reality it is unlikely to make much difference. The pace at which it adopts reforms has been limited more by administrative capacity than by politics. The Financial Times recently added up the value of industries nationalised by the Chávez government. Outside oil, it came to less than 8% of GDP over the last five years. Venezuela still has a long way to go before the state has as much a role in the economy as it does in, for instance, France. On the positive side, the most interesting result of this election is that the opposition participated, has accepted the results, and now has a bloc of representatives that can participate in a parliamentary democracy. This could be an advance for Venezuelan democracy, which has been undermined by an anti-democratic opposition for more than a decade. As opposition leader Teodoro Petkoff has noted, the opposition pursued a strategy of military takeover for the first four years, which included a military coup and a devastating oil strike that crippled the economy. In 2004 the opposition tried to remove Chávez through a referendum; they failed, and then promptly refused to recognise the result - despite its certification by international observers such as the Carter Center and the Organisation of American States. They then boycotted the last election in 2005, hoping to portray the government as a dictatorship and leaving them without representation. This newly elected bloc could potentially draw the opposition into real political participation. If that happens, it would be a significant advance for a country that has been too polarised for too long. *** latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-0922-rutten-20100922,0,6665105.column The GOP/'tea' party radicalism An extremist agenda is indeed in play in American politics. But it emanates from the very GOP/'tea party' candidates who accuse the Obama White House of advancing such a plan. Tim Rutten LA Times Op-Ed: September 22, 2010 In an afterword appended to the White House diaries he published this week, former President Carter muses, It may be difficult for some younger readers to realize how much the Washington political scene has changed in the last 30 years. Carter points out that the congressional bipartisanship on which he

Photograph: Reuters The Israeli navy today boarded a yacht carrying 10 Jewish activists who were attempting to break the sea blockade around Gazahttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/26/jewish-activists-gaza-israel-blockade, forcibly diverting the vessel to the nearby port of Ashdod. There was no resistance, no violence, an Israeli military spokeswoman said. Before we boarded, we twice asked the captain not to cross the international line into Gaza http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/gaza waters but he refused. Contact with the passengers and crew via satellite phone was cut off. The boat, the Irene, sailing under a British flag, was carrying 10 Jewish passengers and crew from Israel http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/israel, Britain, the US and Germany. It was also carrying cargo, including medical supplies, fishing equipment, textbooks and children's toys, which the Israeli authorities said they would transfer to Gaza by land from Ashdod. Shortly before the takeover, Miri Weingarten, media adviser to the Irene, spoke to the British captain, Glynn Secker. He reported that the boat was flanked by a small military boat bearing machine guns and a naval frigate, with which he was in contact. The crew and passengers were warned that they were close to restricted waters and would not be allowed to proceed. They were told the Israeli passengers would be held legally liable. Secker reported that the mood on board the Irene was high-spirited. All on board had pledged to resist the Israeli troops passively rather than physically. Among the passengers are an Israeli Holocaust survivor, an Israeli whose daughter was killed in a suicide bombing in 1997, and a former Israeli air force pilot. *The boat's sponsors include the UK organisation Jews for Justice for Palestinians, which is supported by Marion Kozak, the mother of the Labour leader, Ed Miliband.* The interception comes almost four months after Israeli naval commandos boarded a flotilla of ships http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/gaza-flotillato prevent it reaching the Gaza Strip, which has been under blockade by Israel for over three years. Nine Turkish activists were killed in the bloody assault, on 31 May. The Irene is the first boat to get close to Gaza since the May flotilla despite a number of pledges to send aid by sea to the besieged territory. The Free Gaza Movement, which helped organise the flotilla, is planning a further attempt this autumn. Since the assault on the flotilla, Israel has agreed, under international pressure, to ease the blockade of Gaza, allowing in a wide range of food and goods. However, badly needed construction materials are still limited, exports are still banned, and there is no free movement of people from Gaza into Israel. - [image: Print this]http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/28/israeli-navy-diverts-gaza-ship/print - http://www.guardian.co.uk/email/367106489 - http://www.guardian.co.uk/share/367106489 - http://www.guardian.co.uk/users/clippings/add?r2PageId=1457983 - http://www.guardian.co.uk/contactus/367106489 - larger http://www.guardian.co.uk/help/accessibility | smallerhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/help/accessibility World news http://www.guardian.co.uk/world - Israel http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/israel · - Gaza http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/gaza · - Palestinian territorieshttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/palestinian-territories · - Middle East http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/middleeast More news http://www.guardian.co.uk/tone/news [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] --- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --- Unsubscribe: mailto:laamn-unsubscr...@egroups.com --- Subscribe: mailto:laamn-subscr...@egroups.com --- Digest: mailto:laamn-dig...@egroups.com

It was like a storehouse, filled with human-interest stories of the worst type. When he thought back to Prague, there emerged the occasion when he was admitted to the presence of the great Heydrich, who showed himself to have a more human side. A few sessions later, he mentioned a trip to Bratislava, in Slovakia, where he happened to be at the time when Heydrich was assassinated. What he remembered was that he was there as the guest of Sano Mach, Minister of the Interior in the German-established Slovakian puppet government. (In that strongly anti-Semitic Catholic government, Mach represented the German version of anti-Semitism; he refused to allow exceptions for baptized Jews and he was one of the persons chiefly responsible for the wholesale deportation of Slovak Jewry.) Eichmann remembered this because it was unusual for him to receive social invitations from members of governments; it was an honor. Mach, as Eichmann recalled, was a nice easygoing fellow who invited him to bowl with him. Did he really have no other business in Bratislava in the middle of the war than to go bowling with the Minister of the Interior? No, absolutely no other business; he remembered it all very well, how they bowled, and how drinks were served just before the news of the attempt on Heydrichs life arrived.* Hannah Arendt, *Eichmann in Jerusalem A Report on the Banality of Evil (1963) * And so, in 2010, we arrive at the news that Francisco Chávez Abarca, Luis Posada Carriles errand boy who was arrested in Venezuela in July, has been singing like a canary to Cuban investigatorshttp://www.cubadebate.cu/especiales/2010/09/24/continuation-of-terrorist-plans-from-the-us/. Its not all that remarkable that a former rightwing Latin American president with a distance learning Masters Degree from a university in Benson, Arizona would enjoy spending his leisure time with the biggest terrorist in the Western Hemisphere. The original civilian plane bomber. Someone who paid people like Chávez Abarca to plant explosives in Cuban hotels. At childrens chess matches. And its not really that unusual that all on its own, the U.S. Justice Department would not escalate its dilatory judicial processing of Posada on trivial migration charges. Whats remarkable is that Barack Obama, the man who ran for U.S. president, and won, as the anti-Bush, doesnt appear to find this state of affairs in the least alarming. That between public cocktail parties in Miami, Posada continues calmly plotting with his CIA handlers and friends from the Cuban American National Foundation, the sinking of oil tankers traveling from Venezuela to Cuba and the assassination of Venezuelas elected president with a very specific high caliber rifle all perfectly normal and uninteresting to our commander in chief. Posada laughs at the FBI. As he should. Five Cubans proved 12 years ago that the FBI is utterly uninterested in Miami-grown terrorism. In June, 1998, thanks to the efforts of these five Cubans, ten dossiers of highly specific information were provided to the FBI, including the locations of explosives, detailed flowcharts of the terrorist networks, contact information, aliases, m.o.s. The FBI reverse engineered the reports to arrest the intelligence sources, locking the Cubans up for their trouble, most in high security federal prisons, and there they remain today denied simple privileges granted to fellow inmates: email, visits from their wives. Quite the war on terror. -- Continuation of Terrorist Plans from the US 24 Septiembre 2010 Haga un comentariohttp://www.cubadebate.cu/especiales/2010/09/24/continuation-of-terrorist-plans-from-the-us/#respond [image: foto_portada_terrorismo_ingles]Download this Article in
