[LAAMN] Our problem, by Howard Zinn

2012-01-12 Thread scotpeden
"You are saying that our problem is civil disobedience, but that is NOT
our problem. Our problem is civil OBEDIENCE.

"Our problem is the numbers of people all over the world who have obeyed
the dictates of the leaders if their governments and have gone to war, and
millions have been killed because of their OBEDIENCE.

"Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world, in the face
of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war and cruelty.

"Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty
thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running the country.

"THAT'S OUR PROBLEM."

[LAAMN] Iran Accuses Israel, US of Assassinating Nuclear Scientist, Omar Barghouti, Angela Davis - USC 7:00 PM this evening

Iran Accuses Israel, US of Assassinating Nuclear Scientist

''...After all, killing civilian scientists and civilian leaders, even if
you do it quietly, is unquestionably terrorism. That's certainly what we'd
consider it if Hezbollah fighters tried to kill cabinet undersecretaries and
planted bombs at the homes of Los Alamos engineers. '

- Common Dreams staff report
Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Iran has accused Israel and the United States of being behind the Wednesday
morning assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan.

UPDATE: According to the Inter Press Service
, Iran experts say the latest assassination is likely to scuttle the
already slim chances for a negotiated solution and convince the Islamic
Republic that the United States and its partners are determined to overthrow
the Iranian government.

"The Iranians are convinced that that is our goal," Paul Pillar, a CIA
veteran and former Middle East chief on the National Intelligence Council,
which advises the U.S. president, told IPS.

Pillar referred to inflammatory rhetoric by U.S. Republican presidential
candidates - one of whom, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, has explicitly
called for regime change - while others apart from Texas Congressman Ron
Paul have called for attacking Iran to prevent it from getting nuclear
weapons.

Pillar suggested that U.S. government talking points were being influenced
by domestic politics and that the Obama administration wanted to be seen as
being "tough on Iran" during a year in which the president is running for
re-election.

UPDATE: The US is "categorically" denying any role in today's assassination,
according to
 ABC News:

In the face of Iranian accusations, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
said the American government is not to blame for the bombing assassination
today of a man the Iranian media called a top nuclear scientist.

"I want to categorically deny any United States involvement in any kind of
act of violence inside Iran," Clinton told reporters today. "We believe that
there has to be an understanding between Iran, its neighbors and the
international community that finds a way forward for [Iran] to end its
provocative behavior, end its search for nuclear weapons and rejoin the
international community and be a productive member of it."

The
 Associated Press is reporting:

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Two assailants on a motorcycle attached magnetic bombs
to the car of an Iranian university professor working at a key nuclear
facility, killing him and another person Wednesday, state TV reported. The
slayings suggest a widening covert effort to set back Iran's atomic program.

The attack in Tehran bore a strong resemblance to earlier killings of
scientists working on the Iranian nuclear program. It is certain to amplify
authorities' claims of clandestine operations by Western powers and their
allies to halt Iran's nuclear advances. [...]

Iran has claimed that Israel's Mossad, the CIA and Britain's spy agency are
engaged in an underground "terrorism" campaign against nuclear-related
targets, including at least three slayings since early 2010 and the release
of a malicious computer virus known at Stuxnet in 2010 that Iran says
disrupted controls of some centrifuges - a key component in nuclear fuel
production. Both countries have denied the Iranian accusations.

Israeli officials have hinted about covert campaigns against Iran without
directly admitting involvement.

On Tuesday, Israeli military chief Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz was quoted as
telling a parliamentary panel that 2012 would be a "critical year" for Iran
- in part because of "things that happen to it unnaturally."

 Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan

 Iran's FARS news agency described
  the explosion as a
'terrorist attack' targeting Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a 32-year old graduate
of the prestigious Sharif University of Technology in Tehran. Deputy Tehran
governor Safarali Baratlou was quoted as saying: "The bomb was a magnetic
one and the same as the ones previously used for the assassination of the
scientists, and the work of the Zionists . Zionists seem to be trying to
create a security atmosphere in Iran on the threshold of (parliamentary)
elections to decrease the people' turnout in the polls." A similar bomb
attack on January 12, 2010, killed Tehran University professor Masoud Ali
Mohammadi, a senior physics professor.

King's Birthday!

*MARCH WITH THE MARTIN LUTHER KING COALITION *
* AND OCCUPY THE HOOD *
*IN RESPECTFUL MEMORY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING AT THE ANNUAL KINGDOM DAY
PARADE *
 *MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 2012*

*The Martin Luther King Coalition for Jobs, Justice and Peace is a broad
coalition of individual activists and community groups who are committed to
taking up the fight for social and economic justice and world peace where
Dr. King left off, and applying these principles in the context of the
conditions that we face in the world today. *
*Our goal is to build a genuine popular movement capable of organizing
effectively on a daily basis to change the society we live in.

Each year we mobilize a contingent in the Kingdom Day Parade to commemorate
Dr. King's legacy and to reassert our collective commitment to carrying
forward the struggle to realize Dr. King's dream of a society based upon
the principles of freedom, justice and equality for all people.

This year the Martin Luther King Coalition is pleased to co-sponsor its
contingent with Occupy the Hood, together with the support of the entire
Occupy Movement here in Los Angeles. Activists from the Martin Luther King
Coalition have worked within and supported Occupy L.A. from it's inception,
and we continue to view this movement as the most significant embodiment of
the spirit of Dr. King's movement to emerge in our own times. Like us, the
Occupy movement utilizes the politics of non-violent direct action and
civic persuasion. Their goal, like ours, is to build people power!

Today's needs are just as urgent and compelling as those of Dr. King's
times, perhaps even more so. Multinational corporations monopolize wealth,
smash unions, cut pay and benefits, eliminate jobs and ruin our
environment. They have corrupted our political system and pillaged the
public treasury in order to bail themselves out of a global financial
disaster that is the result of their own illicit manipulations of our
economy, and that of the rest of the planet. The wealthy pay few, if any,
taxes while the rest of us are told to tighten our belts. Essential
services and public programs are cut to the bone --- or "amputated"
altogether! Meanwhile, literally trillions of U.S. tax dollars have been
flushed down the drain of numerous wars and questionable interventions
around the globe since 9/11. There are over 2.5 million Americans
languishing in prisons --- more than ANY other country in the world. There
are at least 4 million homeless people in America on any given night, many
of them children. Somewhere between 6-9 million American homes have been
foreclosed on by the banks in the past 4 years. 45.8 million Americans were
dependent on food stamps as of August of last year. The list of symptoms of
our social crisis goes on and on and on!

IT IS TIME FOR US TO COME TOGETHER TO CHANGE ALL OF THIS!

If you are concerned about the decline of public education, MARCH WITH US!!!

If you tired of massive unemployment in our communities, MARCH WITH US!!!

If you are determined to see something more than drugs, mass incarceration
and gang-banging for our youth, MARCH WITH US!!!

If you believe that we as a society are capable of producing something
better than war, poverty and racism, MARCH WITH US!!!

If you believe that decent food, housing, health care, education, and a
clean environment are fundamental human rights, MARCH WITH US!!!

If you believe that we must work to ensure justice and equality for all
people, regardless of race, creed, color or nationality, MARCH WITH US!!!

If you understand that we must fight to end the erosion of all of our
fundamental HUMAN and CIVIL RIGHTS, MARCH WITH US!!!

*
* March with the Martin Luther King Coalition, Occupy the Hood, and many
other labor, peace and community activists from the L.A. area
 in the Kingdom Day Parade,*
* Monday, January 16, 2012.*

[LAAMN] Marcy Winograd turns Green

2012-01-12 Thread gdjohnson2
Former progressive Democratic congressional
candidate Marcy Winograd has registered Green.
Below is an introduction she sent out to fellow
Greens.

--

Dear Green Party Friends,

In accordance with protocol, I'd like to introduce
myself as a new Green Party member (as of last
week, when I tweeted I was filling out a new voter
reg form). Thank you for your past support of my
congressional peace campaigns and for your
enduring activism.

Currently, I am serving as a board member of the
Ocean Park Association (OPA), and working with
Mike Feinstein and Linda Piera-Avila on issue-
oriented and logistical campaigns (affordable
housing, Sustainability Bill of Rights ordinance,
voter registration) for Santa Monica Greens. In my
capacity on the OPA board, I will be organizing a
neighborhood preparedness infrastructure, with
block captains in voting precincts and search and
rescue teams.

This year I helped organize OccupyLAUSD to demand
surplus funds be used to open school libraries and
rehire laid-off teachers, librarians, nurses, and
counselors. I also led an OccupyLA delegation to
LACERS (LA City Employee Retirement System) to
express concerns over investments in predatory banks
and environmental polluters.

Some of you may have heard the KPFK interview I
did with Green Party Presidential Candidate Dr. Jill Stein,
(Dec. 26/podcast/KPFK.org under Connect the Dots
archive) who was both inspirational and enlightening.
Next Monday, Jan. 16, Lila Garrett, host of KPFK's
Connect the Dots, will explore the third party option
when she interviews both me and Dorothy Reik,an
organizer with Progressive Democrats of the Santa
Monica Mountains. Lila will ask me why I have decided
to leave the Democratic Party.

My New Year's resolution for 2012 was to invest my
energy in creating positive alternatives to perpetual war
and consumerism. The Green Party platform is terrific,
with its emphasis on local economies and opposition to
arms sales. With 900,000 DTS's in LA County and
growing realization of wealth inequity, I am hopeful we
can seize the moment to build the Green Party by not only
registering voters but also running for non-partisan
offices: union leadership positions, associated student
bodies, neighborhood councils, credit union and
cooperative boards, pension boards, etc., and creating
formal or informal spokescouncils where identified
Greens within those neighborhood councils, union
positions, etc., work together, as Greens, to advance
key and strategic agenda items. I would love to see
Greens/teachers run on a slate or mixed slate for the
board of the California Teachers Association.

Thank you for supporting my challenge to Jane Harman.
Many of you walked precincts and made phone calls --
and I appreciate your efforts.

I'm excited to work with you.

  To Peace,

  Marcy Winograd

[LAAMN] Carl Gibson: Grow Up, Ron Paul, Jeff Cohen: Obama, Sarkozy and Taxing Wall Street

2012-01-12 Thread Ed Pearl
Here's my reality check, maybe yours. I still would vote for Obama if it
prevented any of the Republican camdodates from becoming president, and I
still immensely value the singular presence during this campaign of Ron Paul
's stances on War, Imperialism, the military-industrial complex, et al. At
the same time, I fully agree with both articles . "What a revoltin'

Obama, Sarkozy and Taxing Wall Street

Posted: 1/11/12 12:50 PM ET

With U.S. media obsessing on the fight here at home among conservatives
vying to become president, most of them missed some big news about France,
which already has a conservative president. This week, French President
Nicolas Sarkozy announced that he would take the lead -- even go it alone
within Europe, if need be -- in introducing and pushing a Financial
Transaction Tax in his country.

That's right -- the conservative president of France wants to tax the
financial traders and speculators.

Referring to the tax as a "moral issue" and blaming deregulation and
speculation for the global economic meltdown, Sarkozy has said that traders
must "repay for the damage they have caused
 ."

What does it tell us about U.S. politics that the conservative president of
France - on this issue and others -- is way to the left of President Obama?
The U.S. president has not publicly promoted a Wall Street transaction tax
(even though U.S. financial institutions, not the French, were largely
responsible for the global crisis).

Sometimes called a "Robin Hood tax," a Financial Transaction Tax is endorsed
worldwide by everyone from conservative European leaders to the Pope and
Archbishop of Canterbury to Bill Gates and Ralph Nader. The tax is tiny per
transaction and would barely be felt by middle-class investors or their
pensions or 401(k)'s, but it could raise big bucks from high-volume
investors and impose a brake on the kind of speculation that tanked the
world's economy.

French President Sarkozy keeps explaining to the people of France and Europe
that a small transaction tax raises billions for countries facing deficits.

Wouldn't it be something if President Obama went to the American people with
such a deficit proposal, instead of putting Medicare on the chopping block?

President Sarkozy invokes the "moral issue

" of financial institutions repairing the damage they caused. What a shock
it would be to see President Obama aiming the "moral issue" at Wall Street
profiteers and demanding repair of damage, instead of rewarding them with
top White House jobs.

After failing to get resistant allies among European countries to join him,
Sarkozy is going forward on his own - declaring yesterday: "If France waits
for others to tax finance, then finance will never be taxed."

Can you imagine Obama standing up to a resistant Congress on a Wall Street
transaction tax? He can't even stand up to his own advisers on the issue,
according to Ron Suskind's insider book on the Obama White House,
"Confidence Men." Suskind reports that Obama briefly embraced the tax and
declared at one meeting: "We are going to do this!
 " But after Obama's top
economic adviser (and Wall Streeter) Larry Summers criticized the tax, the
idea was buried at the White House.

That was back in 2009. But the idea is still alive on Capitol Hill
. A couple months ago, Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep. Peter
DeFazio introduced a Financial Transaction Tax bill in Congress that would
easily raise $350 billion over 10 years. Rep. John Conyers introduced a
similar bill last year -- it would tax Wall Street to fund federal jobs
programs.

A Wall Street transaction tax is backed by National Nurses United and other
unions. It's popular with the U.S. public, and would be even more popular if
Obama were to campaign for it in 2012.

RootsAction.org has gained 50,000 signatures in support of the tax. You can
add your name here
  to those
pushing Obama to (re)embrace the Wall Street tax.

And don't get me wrong about President Sarkozy of France. He's no great
humanitarian. But he is facing an uphill reelection battle this year and the
conservative president understands how popula

[LAAMN] Henry Kissinger: "If You Can't Hear the Drums of War You Must Be Deaf

2012-01-12 Thread Williams Camacaro
Home | World | Henry Kissinger: "If You Can't Hear the Drums of War You Must Be
Deaf"Henry Kissinger: "If You Can't Hear the Drums of War You Must Be
Deaf"By Alfred Heinz 27/11/2011 09:40:00Font size:  Henry Kissinger, the most
famous living practitioner of international statecraftNEW YORK - USA - In a
remarkable admission by former Nixon era Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger,
reveals what is happening at the moment in the world and particularly the
Middle East.Speaking from his luxurious Manhattan apartment, the elder
statesman, who will be 89 in May, is all too forward with his analysis of the
current situation in the world forum of Geo-politics and economics."The United
States is bating China and Russia, and the final nail in the coffin will be
Iran, which is, of course, the main target of Israel. We have allowed China to
increase their military strength and Russia to recover from Sovietization, to
give them a false sense of bravado, this
will create an all together faster demise for them. We're like the sharp
shooter daring the noob to pick up the gun, and when they try, it's bang bang.
The coming war will will be so severe that only one superpower can win, and
that's us folks. This is why the EU is in such a hurry to form a complete
superstate because they know what is coming, and to survive, Europe will have
to be one whole cohesive state. Their urgency tells me that they know full well
that the big showdown is upon us. O how I have dreamed of this delightful
moment.""Control oil and you control nations; control food and you control the
people."Mr Kissinger then added: "If you are an ordinary person, then you can
prepare yourself for war by moving to the countryside and building a farm, but
you must take guns with you, as the hordes of starving will be roaming. Also,
even though the elite will have their safe havens and specialist shelters, they
must be just as careful during the
war as the ordinary civilians, because their shelters can still be
compromised."After pausing for a few minutes to collect his thoughts, Mr
Kissinger, carried on: "We told the military that we would have to take
over seven Middle Eastern countries for their resources and they have nearly
completed their job. We all know what I think of the military, but I have to
say they have obeyed orders superfluously this time. It is just that last
stepping stone, i.e. Iran which will really tip the balance. How long can China
and Russia stand by and watch America clean up? The great Russian bear and
Chinese sickle will be roused from their slumber and this is when Israel will
have to fight with all its might and weapons to kill as many Arabs as it can.
Hopefully if all goes well, half the Middle East will be Israeli. Our young
have been trained well for the last decade or so on combat console games, it
was interesting to see the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
game, which mirrors exactly what is to come in the near future with
its predictive programming. Our young, in the US and West, are prepared because
they have been programmed to be good soldiers, cannon fodder, and when they
will be ordered to go out into the streets and fight those crazy Chins and
Russkies, they will obey their orders. Out of the ashes we shall build a new
society, there will only be one superpower left, and that one will be
the global government that wins. Don't forget, the United States, has the best
weapons, we have stuff that no other nation has, and we will introduce those
weapons to the world when the time is right."End of interview. Our reporter is
ushered out of the room by Kissinger's minder.

Far from being the exception, the undermining of constitutional rights is
standard operating procedure under capitalism, regardless of which
politicians are in charge.

THE U.S. military can indefinitely detain U.S. citizens without
trial–that’s the latest of our supposedly “inalienable rights”
sacrificed by the Democratic former constitutional law professor who
currently inhabits in the White House.

After promising during his campaign to roll back the abuses of the Bush
administration, Barack Obama has spent the last three years pushing
through attacks on civil liberties that Republicans could only dream
about. He is eliminating all doubts that the Democrats are as firmly
committed as the GOP to strengthening the national security state at the
expense of our rights.

As part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) signed into law
by Obama on December 31, the military–under the authority of the
president–is empowered to hold anyone “who was a part of or
substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban or associated forces that
are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition
partners…without trial until the end of hostilities.”

According to legal scholar Jonathan Turley, the NDAA represents “one of
the greatest rollbacks of civil liberties in the history of our
country.”

Even the liberal New York Times, which regularly praises the Democratic
Obama administration, described Obama’s announcement that he would sign
the bill as “a complete political cave-in, one that reinforces the
impression of a fumbling presidency.”

The ACLU’s Laura Murphy pointed out that the last time Congress passed
indefinite detention legislation was the Internal Security Act of 1950,
passed during the McCarthy era. Then-President Harry Truman vetoed the
Internal Security Act of 1950, but Congress overrode the veto.

As Salon.com’s Glenn Greenwald wrote, the Internal Security Act:

"authorized the imprisonment of Communists and other “subversives”
without the necessity of full trials or due process (many of the most
egregious provisions of that bill were repealed by the 1971
Non-Detention Act, and are now being rejuvenated by these “war on
terror” policies of indefinite detention). President Obama, needless
to say, is not Harry Truman. He’s not even the Candidate Obama of
2008, who repeatedly insisted that due process and security were not
mutually exclusive, and who condemned indefinite detention as “black
hole” injustice."

IN THE New York Times, Andrew Rosenthal wrote, “It’s stunning that the
president is willing to sign a bill that might effectively turn the right
of habeas corpus into a mere privilege–even for citizens.”

But it’s not so “stunning” once you compare this measure with the
Democrats’ record on civil liberties over the past several years–from
capitulation to the Bush administration on the USA PATRIOT Act and similar
abuses to their own measures during the Obama years.

Beyond Obama’s failure to honor his promise to close the U.S. prison
camp at Guantánamo Bay–thus embracing the idea of indefinite detention
of foreign nationals suspected of terrorism–his administration has
overseen a vast expansion of executive power and attacks on rights that
includes: failing to prosecute war crimes, whether committed by U.S.
soldiers or former Bush administration officials; continuing the use of
warantless surveillance; actively prosecuting Bradley Manning and other
whistleblowers who have exposed war crimes; carrying out unlawful
detentions on U.S. soil and repressive, illegal treatment of those accused
of “materially aiding” terrorists; massively expanding the use of
unmanned drones to attack and kill so-called “terrorists” (and, often,
innocent civilians who happen to get in the way); carrying out
extra-judicial assassinations of foreign nationals and at least one U.S.
citizen (Anwar al-Awlaki); defending the right of the president to do so
free from oversight by invoking “state secrets”; continuing the
prosecution of Arabs and Muslims in the U.S. on the flimsiest of evidence
for crimes like “material support” of terrorism.

In other words, the Obama administration has shown its willingness at
every step to trample civil liberties in the service of expanding
executive power–and justify it by invoking the “war on terror.”

Obama did attach a “signing statement” to the NDAA, proclaiming that
he doesn’t want to use the massive power which he was granting to not
only his own, but to successor, administrations. “I have signed this
bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that
regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected
terrorists,” he wrote.

But then why enshrine such hein
