Indian Investigators do not Suspect Iran in Israel Embassy Blast
by Juan Cole(source: Informed Comment)
Tuesday, February 14, 2012

India has suffered from both Hindu and Muslim terrorist groups. So the attack
on an automobile outside the Israeli embassy in New Delhi could easily have
been carried out by an Indian group. Israel’s government, a master of spin and
propaganda, immediately blamed the bombing on Iran and Hizbullah. But there is
no evidence for this cynical allegation, which makes no sense. India is Iran’s
economic lifeline, and Tehran would not likely risk such an operation at this
time.
India gets 12% of its oil from Iran and sees an $8 billion annual export
opportunity in filling the trade vacuum left by unilateral US and European
boycotts of Iran. Contrary to a bad Reuters article, Indian officials denied
Tuesday that the bombing would affect trade ties. (Logical because no evidence
points to Iran.)
Indian investigators are first rate. Based on the modus operandi, their initial
thesis is that the attack was the work of the “Indian Mujahidin” group. It had
used a similar remote controlled sticky bomb, placed by a motorcyclist, in an
attack on Taiwanese tourists outside the Jama Masjid cathedral mosque in 2010.
IM is a Sunni group, not connected to Iran, and doesn’t like Shiite Muslims
(Iranians are Shiites). IM like other Sunni radicals support the Palestinians
and they are unhappy with increasingly close ties between India and Israel.
American media that just parrot notorious thug, Israeli Foreign Minister
Avigdor Lieberman in this unlikely allegation are allowing themselves to be
used for propaganda. Why not interview Indian authorities on this matter? They
are on the ground and have excellent forensic (“CSI”) abilities. Stop being so
lazy and blinkered; that isn’t journalism.

[LAAMN] Obama, the Human Rights Hypocrite

2012-02-15 Thread Romi Elnagar
Who Will Liberate America?
Obama, the Human Rights Hypocrite
by PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

http://www.counterpunch.org/2012/02/15/obama-the-human-rights-hypocrite/

Is Obama a hypocrite or merely insouciant?  Or is he an idiot?
According to news reports Obama’s White House meeting on Valentine’s
day with China’s Vice President, Xi Jinping, provided an opportunity for Obama
to raise “a sensitive human rights issue with the Chinese
leader-in-waiting.”  The brave and forthright Obama didn’t let etiquette or
decorum get in his way. Afterwards, Obama declared that Washington
would “continue to emphasize what we believe is the importance of
realizing the aspirations and rights of all people.”
Think about that for a minute. Washington is now in the second decade of
murdering Muslim men, women, and children in six countries.
Washington is so concerned with human rights that it drops bombs on
schools, hospitals, weddings and funerals, all in order to uphold the
human rights of Muslim people. You see, bombing liberates Muslim women
from having to wear the burka and from male domination.
One hundred thousand, or one million, dead Iraqis, four million
displaced Iraqis, a country with destroyed infrastructure, and entire
cities, such as Fallujah, bombed and burnt with white phosphorus into
cinders is the proper way to show concern for human rights.
Ditto for Afghanistan.  And Libya.
In Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia Washington’s drones bring human rights to the
people.
Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and secret CIA prison sites are other places
to which Washington brings human rights. Obama, who has the power to
murder American citizens without due process of law, is too powerless to close
Guantanamo Prison.
He is powerless to prevent himself from supplying Israel with weapons with
which to murder Palestinians and Lebanese citizens to whom Obama
brings human rights by vetoing every UN resolution passed against Israel for
its crimes against humanity.
Instead of following Washington’s human rights lead, the evil Chinese invest in
other countries, buy things from them, and sell them goods.
Has any foreign dignitary ever raised “a sensitive human rights
issue” with Obama or his predecessor?  How is the world so deranged that
Washington can murder innocents for years on end and still profess to
be the world’s defender of human rights?
How many people has China bombed, droned, and sanctioned into non-existence in
the 21st century?
Will Syria and Iran be the next victims of Washington’s concern for human
rights?
Nothing better illustrates the total unreality of life in the West
than the fact that the entire Western world did not break out in riotous
laughter over Obama’s expression of his human rights concern over
China’s behavior.
Washington’s concern with human rights does not extend as far as
airport security where little girls and grandmothers are sexually
groped. Antiwar activists have their homes invaded, their personal
possessions carried off, and a grand jury is summoned to frame them up
on some terrorist charge. US soldier Bradley Manning is held for two
years in violation of the US Constitution while the human rights
government concocts fabricated charges to punish him for revealing a US
war crime. WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange is harassed endlessly with the goal of
bringing him into the human rights clutches of Washington. Critics
of Washington’s inhumane policies are monitored and spied upon.
Washington is the worst violator of human rights in our era, and Washington has
only begun.
Who will liberate Americans from Washington’s clutches?
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS was an editor of the Wall Street Journal and an Assistant
Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.  His latest book, HOW THE ECONOMY WAS LOST, has
just been published by CounterPunch/AK Press. He can be reached through

[LAAMN] Greece in Flames - by Savas Michael-Matsas, Mind Blowing Charts

2012-02-15 Thread Ed Pearl

Hi. The Charts below the article were made by the Senate Budget committeee,
for their hearings on the US budget. I placed them here as I don't have at
hand any such made for Europe, but they are, if not comparable, likely
worse. I may use them again for my next dometic economy emailing but save
them as broad indicators of where the work economy is heading.

Greece in flames: the prelude of the European Revolution

by Savas Michael-Matsas ,

The worst fears of the ruling classes of Greece and Europe are becoming
true: an uncontrollable social explosion is under way in Greece.

When these lines are written, late in the night on February 12-13, 2012, the
violent clashes and street fights between demonstrators and the riot police,
in the center of Athens and in other cities all over the country, still
continue. The phony "majority" that just voted in Parliament the new package
of measures of social cannibalism imposed by the troika of the EU, the
European Central Bank, and the IMF cannot and will not stop the Greek social
wild fire to expand in the country and spread beyond Greece, all over Europe
and internationally.

The popular rally in Syntagma Square Sunday, February 12 was literally
gigantic: nearly a million people converged in the Square in front of the
Parliament from all the neighborhoods of the Greek capital, in a mass
mobilization that superseded in magnitude and fighting spirit every previous
one, including the huge rallies during the General Strikes of June and
October 2011.

Last week, already two General Strikes had taken place, on February 7 and on
February 10-11 but many factors -- lack of preparation, bureaucratic
opposition to a real mass mobilization, extremely bad weather conditions --
although significant, they had nothing in common with what happened on
February 12, when the masses flooded the streets in Athens and nearly all
other cities giving a nearly insurrectionary character to the mobilization.

The riot police, with a prepared plan, attacked the people in Syntagma from
the early moments of the rally, at 5.15 pm. When the well known composer
Theodorakis and the hero of the anti-Nazi resistance Manolis Glezos, both
nearly 90 years old, advanced to enter the Parliament to make a joint
statement of protest, the riot police attacked them and all the
demonstrators in the Square with tons of chemicals. From that moment the
center of Athens was transformed into a battlefield, while people continued
to come en masse from all directions. In front of the Parliament itself,
they have resisted and remained until 10.30 pm some contingents from the
EEK, ANTARSYA, and the youth of SYRIZA. But all the streets and avenues from
Omonia to Syntagma and even around Acropolis were packed by people resisting
the savage police brutality until late after midnight.

Barricades were erected in some of the streets. Banks, big shops, cinemas
etc., about 40 buildings, were set on fire. The police station in Exarchia
was attacked. A hundred citizens from all age groups were injured, some of
them seriously and brought to the hospital. Another hundred were arrested,
including the demonstrators who had occupied the Town Hall of Athens. The
center of Athens looks today like a bombarded city.

It is noteworthy the fact that the Stalinist KKE one more time held its own
independent rally in Omonia Square (they claim to have assembled 50 thousand
people) but they avoided to join the many hundreds of thousands of people in
and around Syntagma Square because of the clashes of the demonstrators with
the police, and they remained far way from the battle, finally dispersing
peacefully their contingents. According to the Stalinist mantra every
violent clash with police forces, and any form of direct action is "a State
provocation".

The popular rebellion is not limited to Athens. In other cities, all over
Greece, from Corfu in the North West and Thessalonica in the North to Patras
in the West and Creta in the South, were and are taking place mobilizations,
demonstrations, occupations of public buildings, town halls, prefectures
etc. Attacks by angry demonstrators against the political offices of
bourgeois members of parliament took place: in Corfu (North West, Ionian
Sea), Agrinion (Western Greece), Iraklion (Creta, South Aegean Sea) the
offices of all local deputies were destroyed.

The fury of the rapidly impoverished and ruined people was reflected even in
the Parliament, blowing up the bourgeois parliamentary political system as
it used to be the last 38 years, after the fall of the dictatorship.
Although, a two thirds majority of deputies voted for the barbaric
Memorandum imposed by the troika and the current Papadimos government, the
negative vote of an unprecedented large number of deputies was followed by
massive expulsions from the ruling parties supporting Papadimos -- 46
deputies, including founding members or parliamentary spokesmen of their

Dear Friend of the Children,

For the second time this week MECA must share with you news of an event that
has a terrible impact on Palestinian children. On Monday, Israeli forces
bulldozed the community space MECA helped build in Silwan,

East Jerusalem, known as the “cultural café.”

You and hundreds of other MECA supporters helped provide the funds to build the
café and the sports field in front of it. This was a

unique project to provide a much-needed space for children to play and for
youth and adults to gather. Its purpose was also to protect the land from being
stolen by violent Israeli settlers or turned into a parking lot by the
Jerusalem Municipality.

The community and the staff of Madaa Center are determined to rebuild the café.
With your help, we can support the residents of Silwan in demanding their right
to live and build on their land. Their goal is to complete a new café in time
for a Mothers' Day Celebration on March 21, 2012 (Mothers' Day is celebrated
across Arab countries on this date).

MECA has made a commitment to raise $15,000 for this project by February 29,
2012. With your

emergency contribution now, we can meet that goal. And please, make your voice
heard by

sending a letter to Israeli officials responsible for this demolition. Our
partner in Silwan tells us it is important that official bodies know there is
support and vigilance from the international community.

Many thanks for your commitment to the children,
MECA Staff

A friend in another group posted this lengthy article, and while some of it is
a little hard to follow, I am sure it is correct, as I have heard before that
Goldman Sachs is responsible for the Greek economic crisis.

Also, I note that Mitchell Cohen, the author, is on the board of WBAI, which is
a good thing IMHO.

GREECE IN FLAMES: PRELUDE TO EUROPEAN REVOLUTION? A DEBATE WITHIN THE LEFT.

[LAAMN] Who is Capriles Radonski, opposition candidate against President Chavez

Venezuela: a good look Capriles
Radonski, opposition candidate(read: thug and terrorist) against President
Chavez

by Jean-Guy Allard (special to ARGENPRESS.info)

The right-wing leader Henrique Capriles Radonski, who, amidst the coup
d’etat against President Hugo Chávez in April  2002 , led the assault on
the Cuban Embassy in Caracas along with Cuban-Venezuelan terrorists, and who
was unmasked by Wikileaks as a collaborator of the USA Embassy in Caracas, will
be the candidate for the presidency that will confront President Hugo Chavez in
next October elections.

As was anticipated in view of the alliances between candidates, Capriles
won the majority of the votes in the election carried out last Sunday  by
the so called Democratic Unity Table (Mesa de la Unidad Democrática) or
MUD. According to observers, its campaign commanders were characterized by
voting delinquencies such as illegal party propaganda near the voting centres
and the buying of votes.

Capriles is the leader of the party Primero Justicia and was born on 11
July 1972, in Caracas to one of the most privileged families in
Venezuela.  His mother,  Mónica Cristina Radonski Bochenek, of Jewish
(Russian-Polish) origin, is the owner of a well-known cinema chain.  His
father, Henrique Capriles García is from a Jewish-Dutch family from Curacao.

Both families have interests in the media, own various industries,
services and real estate. Capriles Radonsky  graduated from the
conservative Catholic University Andrés Bello (UCAB) in Caracas, and also
studied  at Columbia University, New York.

KNOWN COLLABORATOR OF THE USA EMBASSY

In reports published by the USA State Department on Venezuela and
published by Wikileaks, Capriles was linked to the assault on the Cuban Embassy
in Caracas, and as a suspect in the assassination of the Venezuelan Prosecutor,
Danilo Anderson.

The documents demonstrate the complacency of the USA Embassy in Caracas
towards this leader of the Primero Justicia Party of fascist bent  and
whose role in the assault to the Cuban Embassy and other illicit
activities  has been censured in the text.

These documents show that the USA Embassy not only recognizes
Capriles, who is now the governor of the state of Miranda, but also
offers him cooperation and the many paragraphs that are blacked out by the
censors in Washington reveal collaborations that is beyond what they are
prepared to confess.

On April 12, 2002, during the most tense hours of the coup d’etat, the
Embassy of the Republic of Cuba was assaulted by a group of extreme right
demonstrators that were led by two individuals identified in Venezuela to
terrorist acts against Cuba, they are Salvador Romaní  and  Ricardo
Koesling. These two were soon after joined by Capriles  and the former
commissar of the DISIP (former secret police), the assassin,  Henry López
Sisco.

They cut the electricity and water supply to the diplomatic headquarters,
they destroyed the vehicles of the diplomats and they surrounded the embassy so
that no one could leave it. Capriles Radonsky was caught on film by the
Venezuelan TV stations climbing a ladder and jumping over the embassy
fence,  then enter the embassy and  threatening the Ambassador of Cuba
in Venezuela,  Germán Sánchez Otero, with more violence if he did not give
up the Venezuelan officials whom they thought were hidden in the Embassy.

On that same day, April 12, Capriles  -who was then mayor of the
municipality of  Baruta  where the Cuban Embassy was located-
not only refused to take measures  to stop acts of violence, but
witnessing on site the violence, insisted on “inspecting” the Embassy,
something completely against international conventions, and then made
provocative statements.

Capriles Radonski was also an accomplice in the arbitrary detention of
Ramón Rodríguez Chacín, then Minister of Justice and the Interior and took part
in the illegal sacking of his home.

THE ASSASINATION OF PROSECUTOR DANILO ANDERSON

After many lies and spins of the right concerning the circumstances of
the assault, on March 16 2004, the prosecutor Danilo Anderson, in charge
of  more than 400 cases of people suspected in the coup d’etat of April
2002, issued an order of arrest against Capriles, accusing him of violating the
fundamental principles of international law, violating private property and of
abuse of power.  While these proceedings were going on, Capriles was kept
in detention until September.

On November 18, the young prosecutor died when his car exploded,
destroyed by a bomb that contained the explosives C-4, a powerful artifact the
type that has been  used en in numerous occasions by Cuban-American
terrorists.

A list was published of the intellectual authors of the assassination,
among whom was Salvador Romaní, a Cuban lawyer, along with the financial
swindler Nelson Mezerhane, shareholder of the private TV station Globovisión,
the journal

Republicans want to give "moral" control over your healthcare to your employer.
DON'T LET THEM.

   Dear Romi,

Republicans are trying to attach an amendment to the highway funding bill this
week that could deny countless women and men access to all sorts of lifesaving
healthcare, simply based on the stated beliefs of their employers.

The Right is claiming to stand up for the religious liberty of employers, but
this attack is really meant to unravel healthcare reform from within. They want
to give employers the power to impose their own religious beliefs on their
employees, getting in between Americans and their doctors and taking life and
death decisions away from the people who should be making them.

The vote in the Senate this week is just the start. Republican leaders in both
the Senate and the House have signaled that this is an election year fight they
want to have, and they will be pushing for such utterly extreme legislation
repeatedly.

Tell them, "NO." Join our emergency petition now to stop far-right congressmen
from giving your employer the power to deny you important healthcare.

Imagine your employer could deny you access to healthcare altogether on the
grounds that their religion was opposed to modern medicine and they believed
prayer was the best medicine. No exaggeration -- that's how far this amendment
by Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) goes.

The Obama administration announced a reasonable accommodation on this issue,
providing that in the Affordable Care Act mandate for contraception coverage,
religiously affiliated institutions that object to contraception as a matter of
religious doctrine did not have to pay for that coverage for their employees --
instead, insurance companies would cover the cost. That compromise satisfied
the majority of those critical of the mandate before it included that
exemption, and has been widely hailed as striking the right balance between
religious liberty and women's access to important healthcare.

The GOP and its Religious Right allies have not only moved the goal post with
their new overreaching proposal, they have abandoned any pretense that their
concern was ever really "religious liberty." This is about the Right's ongoing
war on women's health ... about primarily male lawmakers and institutions
making decisions for women about their bodies ... about giving employers undue
power over their employees' lives ... about granting special privileges to the
Religious Right that says the rules shouldn't apply to them ... and it's about
trying to destroy healthcare reform.

Tell Republicans you aren't buying their phony "religious liberty" argument.
Speak out and make sure Congress stops these attacks on Americans' healthcare.

Thank you for your activism. The country has never needed it more.

--Ben Betz, Online Strategy Manager

P.S. This is one more example of how far the Right is willing to go in its
anti-choice zealotry. The right-wing decision makers inside Susan G. Komen for
the Cure were willing to deny millions of women access to breast cancer
screenings in order to hurt Planned Parenthood ... now Republican lawmakers are
attacking all Americans' basic access to healthcare and rights so they can deny
women contraception. Don't let them.

‘Assad must go to save Syria from intervention’

Published: 15 February, 2012, 13:03
Edited: 15 February, 2012, 13:03

Syrian President Bashar Assad should resign if he doesn’t want to repeat
the fate of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi, while Russia
and China should help him to do so, the Middle East expert Tariq Ali told
RT.

British historian and journalist Ali considers it unlikely that Syrian
president will step down on his own accord.

*“He has to be pushed out,” *Tariq Ali insists, for which *“the Syrian
people are doing their best”.*

Pressure is being mounted outside Syria by Turkey and NATO for intervention
– that would be disastrous and bring enormous bloodshed, like in Libya,
believes Tariq Ali.

The expert says both Assad and his father have spilled enough Syrian blood
and that “this family is unacceptable”.

*“Syria needs a non-sectarian national government to prepare a new
constitution,"* Tariq Ali stressed.

He expressed hope that all the most influential parties, like Russia,
China, Iran and even Hezbollah must realize that it is time for President
Assad to go and to do so, no peacekeeping force is needed.

Tariq Ali agrees that mounting international pressure on Bashar Assad is
needed because simple economic sanctions will not bring the desired
results. Countries like Iran and China would not abide them, so it is time
for Russia and China to realize they need Assad no more.

He believes that once Assad falls, the new government will keep good
relations with Iran, because this will be in the interest of the new
democratic government.

*“If the Assad clan refuses to relinquish their stronghold on the country,
sooner or later something disastrous will happen,”* Tariq Ali predicts,
threatening a foreign intervention and recalling the inglorious deaths of
Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi lynched by mobs inspired by the west.

*“That is the future that stares them in the face, there is no other
future,”* Tariq Ali said.

*“The fact is that the overwhelming majority of people in Syria want the
Assad family out – and that is the key thing that we have to understand and
he [Assad] should understand,”* Tariq Ali claims.

He also warns about letting Islamists of the Muslim Brotherhood take
control of the Syrian government. Even if it becomes a moderate one,
religious minorities will most probably be targeted to divert attention
from economic and social problems.

Bahrain, Syria (and Beyond) Live Coverage: The Momentum of Protest, Part 1

2110 GMT: Just when it didn't look like the international community could
be more divided on Syria, Syrian President Bashar al Assad has called for a
Constitutional
referendumthat
would, in theory, end singe-party rule:

The proposed charter drops Article 8, which declared the ruling Baath Party
as the "leader of the state and society", allowing for a multi-party
system, state television said on Wednesday.

The president, who must be a Muslim man, can serve a maximum of two
seven-year terms, although it is unclear if this would apply to Assad, who
is already in his second term.

Russia has praised the move, the US called it "laughable," and the
posturing continues. For EA, the question of reform can be boiled down into
two points: is the regime serious, and does it matter either way?

Reform - Syria was under an emergency rule between 1963 and last April, but
violence has been steadily, or exponentially, increasing every month since
that emergency law was lifted. Other agreements made by the Assad regime,
for instance with the Arab League, have been broken almost immediately.

  Pakistan: The Muslim
League(s)
Written by Lal Khan Wednesday, 15 February 2012
[image: Print]

*The innumerable Muslim Leagues that traverse the spectrum of Pakistan’s
dominating political establishment in a number of ways reflect the disarray
and the pathetic conditions of the ruling classes and society they try to
scathe and exploit. Like Pakistan, their putrescence lies in their origins.*

The Muslim League was created in 1906 by a number of Muslim aristocrats to
present their servitude to the Raj in order to gain economic and political
benefits from the imperialist masters. The first letter sent to the Viceroy
Lord Minto from the leadership of this “new” party narrated these desires
of the Muslim elite of India. But the real evolution of this force and its
unpopularity even amongst the oppressed Muslims was written in one of the
last letters by Sir Allama Mohammad Iqbal to whom is attributed the
Two-Nation ideology.

In a letter to Mohammad Ali Jinnah dated May 28, 1937, a few months before
his death, Iqbal wrote, “I have no doubt that you fully realise the gravity
of the situation as far as Muslim India is concerned. The (Muslim) League
will have to finally decide whether it will remain a body representing the
upper classes of the Indian Muslims or the Muslim masses, who have so far,
with good reason, taken no interest in it. Personally, I believe that a
political organisation, which gives no promise of improving the lot of the
ordinary Muslim, cannot attract our masses. Under the new constitution the
higher posts go to the sons of upper classes; the smaller ones go to the
relatives of ministers. Our political institutions have never thought of
improving the lot of Muslims generally. The problem of bread is becoming
more and more acute.”

In the ensuing decades, the various Muslim Leagues have hardly ever heeded
the concerns of their professed ideologue. However, the concocted history
of the creation of the Pakistani state, even being linked to the Indus
Valley Civilisation, would not have come into being if all had gone
according to the decisions of Jinnah and the Muslim League. In early May
1946, the Cabinet Mission arrived in India. According to the Cabinet
Mission Plan published on May 16, “partition” as an option was dismissed
and there was to be a united India where the central government would
control defence, foreign affairs and communications. The subcontinent would
be divided into three confederated units A, B and C. The Muslim League
Council deliberated for three days before coming to a decision. On the
final day, Jinnah announced the acceptance of the Cabinet Mission Plan. The
Council voted unanimously in its favour. This in reality meant the
refutation of the so-called 1940 “Pakistan Resolution” and a retreat from
the idea of partition. The sacrifices and the struggle of the “veterans” of
the Pakistan movement had been for what? The millions who perished in the
massacres and mayhem came as a result of this bloody partition and not for
its cause.

Paradoxically, it was Nehru’s provocative press conference, at the behest
of Edwina Mountbatten and the conservative sections of the British elite,
in Bombay on July 10, that forced Jinnah and the Muslim League to retract
from the Cabinet Mission Plan and re-embark on the discourse of partition.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, veteran leader of the Indian National Congress,
wrote in his renowned book, *India Wins Freedom*: “Now a situation had
arisen where we were becoming greater supporters of partition than Jinnah.
I warned Jawaharlal that history would never forgive us if we agreed to
partition. The verdict would be that India was divided not by the Muslim
League but by Congress.”

In 64 years of Pakistan’s existence the role of all arrays of the Muslim
League have been to gain political power for the benefit of the different
factions of the ruling classes who needed the state to enhance their rates
of profit and primitive accumulation through corruption and criminal
methods. This ruling class was historically belated and economically too
weak and therefore could not develop a modern industrialised society. Their
relentless lust for plunder created frictions and conflicts between
different sections of the Pakistani bourgeoisie and feudal aristocracy.
This severe crisis was reflected in the political arena, leading to
bickering and conflicts amongst the elite and hence various Muslim Leagues
representing different interests of the ruling class. In adverse
situations, the military stepped in to rule directly. To assume a political
role, every dictator embarked on a path of acquiring a concubine in the
shape of the Muslim League and used it as an instrument of political
usurpation. The only time the Muslim Leagues were ejected from the
corridors of power was after the revolutionary upheaval

Black History Month Film Showing

Award Winning Documentary—

Freedom on My Mind

Friday, February 24, 7:00 p.m.

This feature length film brings to life the 1960-1965 Mississippi Voter
Registration
Project.  The documentary tells the story of local sharecroppers—led by women
like Fannie Lou Hamer—and young civil rights organizers, Black and white, who
worked together to challenge the apartheid system in Mississippi.  The betrayal
of their demands for equality and political power at the 1964 Democratic Party
Convention was a watershed event in the modern civil rights movement.

Today, racist and xenophobic “voter ID” laws threaten ‘60s civil rights gains
with  a gateway to Jim Crow.  An open mic will follow the film on how to regain
and extend all human and civil rights.

A Chili and Cornbread supper, with vegetarian, option will be served at 6:30
p.m.  Film donation $3-$5, supper donation $8, (work exchanges available for
low income).  The program will be held at Solidarity Hall, 2122 W. Jefferson
Bl., Los Angeles, off the 10 freeway at Arlington, on bus lines 38 and 209.
Disabled accessible.

Co-sponsored by the Freedom Socialist Party and Radical Women.

[LAAMN] Fw: BREAKING

2012-02-15 Thread Romi Elnagar

Greenpeace

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser
Romi, I just wanted to give you an update on our activities in North Carolina.
Just minutes ago, activists greeted employees at Duke headquarters with a
message: We’re not going away until you clean up your act. Duke & its CEO Jim
Rogers keep claiming they support using
renewable energy, and yet they’re spending their time and money by
investing in more dirty coal.

We need to get 50,000 letters to Duke by tonight and we’re almost there.
Send your message to Jim Rogers right now and tell him to dump dirty
coal!
Thanks, Robert

If you can't access this link, go to
https://secure3.convio.net/gpeace/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=1023

Activists have taken a stand at a coal plant in North Carolina to send a
message: Dirty energy is not the answer.

Help back up these activists by sending the same message yourself to Duke
Energy CEO Jim Rogers right now.

Just moments ago activists took a stand at a coal-fired power plant in North
Carolina.

Duke Energy is looking to acquire the company that owns the plant, Progress
Energy. If the deal goes down, Duke will not only be the largest utility in the
country but also one of the dirtiest. That’s because both companies rely on
destructive practices like mountaintop
removal for getting their coal and neither is making very much progress
toward renewable energy.

These
activists are there to send a clear message to Duke: Dirty energy is
not the answer. But you don’t have to be at a coal plant to send the
same message yourself.

Help back up the activists and help us reach our goal of 50,000 letters to
Duke CEO Jim Rogers in the next 48 hours by sending the same message
yourself right now.

Companies
like Duke know they can do better and have invested a lot of money in
convincing the public they are. Jim Rogers himself recently acknowledged
that his company and other utilities are in a “unique position...to
deploy solutions, to raise the capital and not raise the national debt,
to do it at scale...”

Unfortunately,
their behavior doesn't match that rhetoric. Duke continues to rely on
dirty old coal plants like the one these activists are at today in North
Carolina. Polluting the air, destroying mountains, poisoning the water
and killing the climate in the process.

And
Duke’s planned merger with Progress Energy seems to only be leading
them down more dead ends -- more dangerous nuclear plants, more dirty
biomass, and more coal-fired power plants. In other words, more global warming.

Duke
can make a different choice if they want to. But that will only happen
if we call them out. That’s why activists have taken a stand today at a
coal plant in North Carolina today to get the message across, and it’s
why you should take a minute to deliver the same message yourself right
now.

Quit Coal,

[LAAMN] Moyers/Winship: Money Throws Democracy Overboard, Harry Truman: A Type America Will Never See Again

2012-02-15 Thread Ed Pearl

From: Anthony Saidy [mailto:saidych...@sbcglobal.net]
Sent: Tuesday, February 14, 2012 11:28 PM

To the below I would add Truman's part in launching the Cold War, which
might not have occurred if FDR had not dumped Henry Wallace as VP.

Sent: Tue, February 14, 2012 5:02:48 PM
Subject: HARRY & BESS

Forgiving Truman for his unconscionable use of the atom bomb of two Japanese
cities has always left me unable to deal with any good qualities he may have
had.
That said the following demonstrates an unrecognizable aspect in our
political attitudes of today.
-Cindy Asner

On Feb 14, 2012, at 9:51 AM, Michael Fish wrote:

HARRY & BESS

Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many, or
more, important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other
42 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on
what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in
Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and
father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their
entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension
reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying
for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and,
later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to
Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating,
"You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't
belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale.."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the
Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I
don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any
award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the
Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have
found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their
offices. Political offices are now for sale.

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were
either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the
truth, there's hardly any difference!

I say dig him up and clone him!!

Money Throws Democracy Overboard

by Bill Moyers and Michael
Winship
Common Dreams: February 14, 2012

Watching what's happening to our democracy is like watching the cruise ship
Costa Concordia founder and sink slowly into the sea off the coast of Italy,
as the passengers, shorn of life vests, scramble for safety as best they
can, while the captain trips and falls conveniently into a waiting life
boat.

We are drowning here, with gaping holes torn into the hull of the ship of
state from charges detonated by the owners and manipulators of capital.
Their wealth has become a demonic force in politics. Nothing can stop them.
Not the law, which has been written to accommodate them. Not scrutiny --
they have no shame. Not a decent respect for the welfare of others -- the
people without means, their safety net shredded, left helpless before events
beyond their control.

The obstacles facing the millennial generation didn't just happen. Take an
economy skewed to the top, low wages and missing jobs, predatory interest
rates on college loans: these are politically engineered consequences of
government of, by, and for the one percent. So, too, is our tax code the
product of money and politics, influence and favoritism, lobbyists and the
laws they draft for rented politicians to enact.

Here's what we're up against. Read it and weep: "America's Plutocrats Play
the Political Ponies." That's a headline in "Too Much," an Internet
publication from the Institute for Policy Studies that describes itself as
"an online weekly on excess and inequality."

Yes, the results are in and our elections have replaced horse racing as the
sport of kings. Only these kings aren't your everyday poobahs and
potentates. These kings are multi-billionaire, corporate moguls who by the
divine right, not of God, but the United States Supreme Court and its
Citizens United decision, are now buying politicians like so much pricey
horseflesh. All that money pouring into super PACs, much of it from secret
sources: merely an investment, should their horse pay off in November, in
the best government money can buy.

They're shelling out fortunes' worth of contributio
