2012-12-11 Thread Cindy Henderson

This is from Peace Freedom Comrade Chuck Anderson. Chuck has been very
active in KPFK for a long time, and I share his recommendations
 To: change-li...@yahoogroups.com; actio...@lists.riseup.net;

From: quetzalcoat...@aol.com

Chuck

quetzalcoat...@aol.com

Subject: [actionla] Quorum needed in KPFK station board elections

Please feel free to forward widely, and to alert your own email lists:

KPFK is far from quorum on the local station board elections; only about half
the number needed have been sent in so far. This year, ballots for all 5
Pacifica stations are being collected and tallied in NY. Please send in your
ballot if you have not already done so, and please alert others you know who
are KPFK subscribers. If you are a listener-sponsor and have NOT received your
ballot, please call 866-720-4357 IMMEDIATELY to get a new ballot.

I am endorsing the candidates of the Grassroots Community Radio Coalition, in
particular current LSB members Aryana Gladney of the Black Riders Liberation
Party and Lawrence Reyes of the Puerto Rican Alliance, Reza Pour of the Union
of Progressive Iranians, a former LSB member, Jamie Rae Garcia, a nurse with
Occupy the Hood, Jack Neff, Sonia Parada and Armida Corral.

All 9 candidates are listed at www.gcrc-socal.org along with the platform of
the coalition for building the station and attracting new listeners with their
talents, voices, contributions and concerns. -

-Michael Novick

PS Additional endorsements for the Grassroots slate always welcome!--MN

[LAAMN] FW: [pfp-scc]Peace Freedom Party Calls California Secretary of State to List All Four Presidential Candidates in Party Presidential Primary

2012-02-10 Thread Cindy Henderson

Friends and fellow activists,
The Secretary of State is attempting to further marginalize third Parties,
especially Peace Freedom, California's only socialist 3rd Party by omiting
several of our candidates from the Presidential Primary Ballot. California
voters need choice beyond the failed policies that have benefited only the one
percent. Below is an article from Ballot Access News, describing the
situation. Please read it and sign the online petition.

Please contact the L.A. County Peace Freedom Party for questions or comments:
323-960-5063
Thank you,
Cindy

Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2012 03:29:24 -0800
From: ctwebervot...@att.net
To: joanna.south...@sos.ca.gov
Subject: [pfp-scc]

Here is an article from Ballot Access News which talks about Keyes v Bowen,
C062321. It concluded that candidate eligibility is best left to each party.
 C. T. Weber
Peace and Freedom Party of California
State Chairperson

Peace Freedom Party Attempts to Persuade California Secretary of State to
List All Four Presidential Candidates in Party Presidential Primary February
9th, 2012

The Peace Freedom Party is carrying on an active campaign to persuade
California Secretary of State Debra Bowen to list all four presidential
candidates that the party suggested for its presidential primary ballot. See
this story in the Sacramento Bee, which says the party has a press conference
at 10 a.m. in Sacramento on Thursday, February 9. The story starts with another
topic at the top; just continue reading beyond the first-listed item.
The story implies that the reason the Secretary of State left one of the four
candidates off the party’s presidential ballot, Peta Lindsay, is that she is
under age 35. However, the reporter seems unaware that the California State
Court of Appeals already determined that parties, not the Secretary of State,
should make their own determinations of eligibility. In Keyes v Bowen, C062321,
decided on October 25, 2010, the Appeals Court wrote, “Any investigation of
eligibility is best left to each party, which presumably will conduct the
appropriate background check or risk that its nominee’s election will be
derailed by an objection in Congress.” See this wiki page for Lindsay.
Furthermore, if the basis for the Secretary of State’s action is that Lindsay
is under age, that still doesn’t explain why she omitted the name of Stephen
Durham from the ballot. Durham only recently announced his presidential
candidacy, so he hasn’t had much time to publicize it, but he is the subject of
a lengthy, full-page article in the Freedom Socialist, issue of February-March
2012.
An internet petition is circulating, asking the Secretary of State to list the
two omitted candidates. The two candidates who are not omitted are Rocky
Anderson and Stewart Alexander. However, it is somewhat likely that Rocky
Anderson will withdraw from the PFP primary, and if he does, and if the
Secretary of State’s action is not reversed, the presidential primary will
carry only one name. UPDATE: here is a story from indybay.

[LAAMN] Against the NDAA? Help the Candidate of the 99%

2011-12-30 Thread Cindy Henderson

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) included a dangerous
provision authorizing the U.S. military to pick up and imprison civilians —
including Americans — without charge or trial, (the same week the Occupy
Movement was being cleared from city streets all over the U.S.)

If you feel irate and betrayed that both of our California
Senators voted in favor of this:

http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/271037/20111221/ndaa-bill-senator-vote.htm
And if you are ready to stop being ripped off by politicians who claim to work
for us, and cave in to the ruling elite, keep reading:

Marsha Feinland, retired school teacher from Berkeley is running
for U.S. Senate in 2012. As a Peace
Freedom Party Candidate for this office in 2010 Marsha demonstrated her
commitment
to civil liberties, workers and immigrants’ rights, single payer healthcare and
environmental protection. Check out her
stand on all the issues we’ve been all
been talking about and in the streets about, and it’s apparent that she is one
of the candidates of the 99%.: http://feinlandforsenate.org/index.php

Under Proposition 14’s new election laws, all candidates for
partisan office will run in the same June Primary. All voters will be able to
vote for her
regardless of what party they are registered in, including decline to state.

To get on the California Ballot, Marsha needs 10,000 petition
signatures form California Voters: any California voter, regardless of Party
registration,
including decline to state may sign or circulate a petition for Marsha Feinland
for Senate.

If you want a candidate powered the people, instead of elite wealth, pick up

[LAAMN] FW: BREAKING: This Morning in New York City...

2011-11-15 Thread Cindy Henderson

Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2011 11:58:40 -0500
From: messen...@truthout.org
To: coz42...@hotmail.com
Subject: BREAKING: This Morning in New York City...

Last night, I watched lower Manhattan turn into a militarized lockdown. The
park known as Liberty Square was apparently cleared by force, though I arrived
20 minutes after the police barricades encircled a two-block radius, kicked out
all media and prevented all foot traffic on public sidewalks surrounding the
park.
This was expected. The emergency text message went out at 1:00 AM and read,
URGENT: Hundreds of police mobilizing around Zuccotti. Eviction in progress!
prompting a mass mobilization of people like me, part-time protesters who
signed up to converge on the park for the looming police raid on the physical
heart of the Occupy movement.
The police were prepared for this flood of bodies. Many subway stops were shut
down, as was the Brooklyn Bridge. My go bag had been packed for weeks, waiting
for just this moment. I laced up my boots, and spent an agonizing 20 minutes on
the subway from Brooklyn.
Upon arrival in lower Manhattan, I struggled for about two hours to get to a
position where I could see into the park, to no avail. From a block away, I saw
massive piles of what used to be supplies dumped into waiting trucks. People's
major concerns were two-fold: first, the health and safety of the occupiers
locked in the camp; and second, the 5,000 books of the Occupy Wall Street
library. What a picture it would be (maybe it exists) of police in riot gear
gathering boxes of donated books and loading them into garbage trucks. A
perfect metaphor for what appears to be the intention of last night's raid:
destroying the body of knowledge that had been collected by a movement just two
months old, which was built by collective effort, literally from the ground up.
After four hours of wandering in groups and alone on the dark, empty streets of
lower Manhattan, Foley Square, a park rich with the history of labor struggles
in New York City, became the rallying point. After a short discussion with the
handful of police on hand, Foley Square was determined to be a safe zone - for
the time being.
Here I sit, watching the pulse of the Occupy Wall Street movement strengthen.
Stories of arrests are being exchanged over a breakfast of apples and muffins.
A sleepless crowd is beginning to be reinforced by New Yorkers from around the
city as the morning news streams images of a camp turned back into a barren,
soulless corporate park known as Zuccotti. But the drums are back. The spirit
and the idea of the Occupy movement has only been strengthened. Today is the
end of the beginning, and what has been built cannot be disbanded. Now, we
stand at the beginning of the next phase, looking into the eyes of the people
who created a new consciousness and a new politics.
Today is November 15, 2011, a beautiful day tainted only by the physical harm
of those who left their blood and sweat on the cement of Liberty Park.

If there ever was a class of workers that needed a union, it's
the truck drivers who haul cargo in and out of U.S. seaports.

L.A. Toll Group port drivers have decided they had enough of
being treated like 2nd class citizens by their Australian
employer and have organized themselves to form a union to
achieve the American Dream.
Now they need your help.
Toll Group, an $8.6 billion global company with yearly earnings
of a quarter of a billion dollars, is showing no mercy.
They're pulling all anti-union stunts to stop the momentum
created by workers and are retaliating against drivers that
have taken a stand.
We need your help to spread the word about the port drivers' fight at Toll
Group. Please watch and send out the video to all of your contacts -

[LAAMN] Sat. June 26: Socialist Party Event w/ Black Panther Bobby Seal

2011-06-24 Thread Cindy Henderson

The Socialist Party of California announced today that it will host an evening
with founder, chairman, and national organizer of the Black Panther Party,
Bobby Seale, on Saturday, June 25th at 6pm, at the Los Angeles Workers Center,
1251 South Saint Andrews Place in Los Angeles, California. This special event
is open to the public. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-serve
basis. There is no cover charge. Donations are welcome.Mr. Seale’s program for
the evening will focus on “community controls of economic frameworks that
retail and produce services and goods and political institutions that affect
our lives.” His speech will be followed by a QA session and a brief
meet-and-greet. Mr. Seale will also autograph copies of Black Panther and Bobby
Seale books and DVDs, which will be available for sale at the event. This event
came to fruition after a recent Socialist Party meeting, where Local leaders
from Los Angeles County, Orange County and Riverside County discussed hosting a
revolutionary leader to address the needs of the community, motivate the
working class to take power back into their hands, and provide continued
inspiration to those who are currently working on behalf of the people. Bobby
Seale, one of the nation’s most dynamic defenders of civil rights and champions
of social power, was an obvious choice. The Socialist Party of California has
drawn and continues to draw inspiration from Bobby Seale and the Black Panther
Party’s example of community organization and social control. From the free
breakfast programs for children and the armed citizen patrols to the medical
services and Ten-Point Program, the Black Panthers, under the leadership of
Bobby Seale, achieved a level of community power since unseen in the United
States. Please join the Socialist Party of California and Bobby Seale on June
25th.

Subject: [clnews] An appeal for solidarity to all workers of Suzuki Motor
Corporation
To: i...@iuf.org

Please help in circulating this appeal to all unions of Suzuki Motor
Corporation workers around the world. We call upon all activists, intellectuals
and citizens in India and abroad to help by sending this appeal to a Suzuki
workers’ union known to you or by taking it to workers of a Suzuki plant in
your area.

An appeal for solidarity to all workers of Suzuki Motor Corporation
More than 2000 of your co-workers are on strike for their right to organise and
form a union in the Maruti Suzuki plant at Manesar in India
Workers have to fight unitedly against heightened attacks on labour rights all
over the world in the name of recession and austerity measures

Dear friends,

More than 2000 workers of the Maruti Suzuki factory at Manesar, Gurgaon are on
strike since last June 4 and have occupied the factory. Their demands are
totally lawful. For now they are just demanding that their legal right to form
their own union be recognised. As per the labour law, they have all the rights
to form their own union and all the workers support this demand. These include
a large number of contract workers and apprentice workers who have been working
in the factory for years. Maruti Suzuki India, the biggest car maker in India
is a partial subsidiary of the Suzuki Motor Corporation who owns 54 percent of
its equity.
But the management of Maruti Suzuki, in a totally illegal manner, has refused
to give recognition to the union and is adopting fascist tactics to break the
agitation. It is getting open support from the Congress government of the state
of Haryana. The management has declared the strike as illegal and the 11
leading workers have been dismissed. Even the state government has declared
the agitation as illegal. It has given a free hand to the Maruti Suzuki
management to deal with the workers.
The workers are sitting inside the factory gates for past 12 days. The
management has disconnected the electricity and water supply in the factory
premises and even the canteen has been shut down. The workers are sitting in
the same clothes in excruciating summer heat but they are not ready to buckle
down in the face of the strongarm tactics of management. Large number of police
personnel and armed security guards of Maruti Suzuki are deployed at the
factory gate who stop everyone at a distance of 100 meter from the factory
gate. Not even the media persons and the relatives of workers are being allowed
to meet the workers. The relatives who take food to the workers inside are also
being threatened and intimidated. Those who are trying to spread their message
to fellow workers in the region are attacked by the security gurads of the
company. (Please go here for more news about the strike:
http://workersresist.net).
We appeal to all the workers of the Suzuki Motor Corporation to show solidarity
with their co-workers who are fighting against all odds and pressurise the
company to stop its repressive tactics and accept the just demands of the
workers. Workers all over the world are facing heightened attacks on labour
rights in the name of recession and austerity measures. Workers have to fight
unitedly against the might of the corporates to safeguard our rights and jobs.
We must find ways to organise all workers of transnational corporations like
Suzuki as well as all workers of an industry like the automobile industry. The
corporations are colluding to crush workers all over. It is high time that the
workers across countries start joining hands to resist.

A high-profile South Carolina union leader said Wednesday that he doesn't see
any other way for the labor movement to win the battle against an anti-union
bill in Wisconsin than to call for a general workers strike if such legislation
passes.
Kenny Riley, who heads up the Charleston local 1422 of the International
Longshoremen's Association - the largest and most powerful union in the
Palmetto State - is a bright star among the national union leadership.
He's heading to Cleveland today for the Emergency Labor Meeting.
Riley will speak in Cleveland on a panel titled How Can We Help Mobilize the
Labor Movement to Fight the Attacks Against Working People?
Panelists who were also scheduled include Russell Bannan, American Federation
of Teachers Colorado State Organizing Director; Gladys McKenzie, Field
Representative, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees
Council 5 (Minnesota) and David Newby, President Emeritus, Wisconsin State
AFL-CIO.
Riley's main worry is what will happen after all the rallies and protests that
brought the debate over workers rights and collective bargaining onto the front
pages of newspapers and prime-time TV broadcasts.
In Wisconsin, for instance, if Republican Gov. Scott Walker ends up passing a
bill that strips collective bargaining rights, what good was all that noise?
I don't see any other way than [proposing] a general workers strike, Riley
says. I would actually want to have a call for a general strike before the
bill is passed.
Riley plans to say as much during the Cleveland meeting tonight.
Riley says he's tired of having feel-good meetings and isn't looking forward to
listening to labor experts or historians talk in the abstract.
For his part, Riley is ready to move forward with warnings about the prospect
of a nationwide general workers strike in response to the anti-collective
bargaining legislation in Wisconsin, even if workers never actually have to
pick up a picket sign.
You don't always have to pull the trigger, but you have to pull a gun, he
says.
If that sounds strongly worded, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley might have been
expecting it.
The newly elected anti-union Republican governor recently took to her Twitter
page recently to declare: The more heavy-handed the unions are with us, the
more we are going to talk smack back.
Last year, South Carolina had the third-lowest organized workforce in the
country at 4.5 percent, according to the national Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Palmetto State has a bloody history when it comes to unions, including a
brutal massacre in the town of Honea Path in 1934 when security forces working
for a textile company opened fire on workers attempting to organize.

I am sending this plea out to more than 50 of my friends because I believe you
will agree we have to do something to stop the plunder of Social Security.

Please consider responding to this urgent request to stop the Senate from
cutting funds from Social Security that would lead to the layoff of the people
who process our social security checks each month. If these employees lose
their jobs, recipients of social security will experience delays in receipt of
their payments and others applying for social security will suffer longer
delays in getting approved.

Thank you

Take Action

Dear Sharon,
Republicans have found an easier way to cut Social Security—just cut funding
for the Social Security Administration (SSA). In the wee hours of the morning
on February 19, all but three House Republicans voted to cut $1.7 billion from
the SSA. The proposed cuts are so severe that the SSA could have to furlough
thousands of workers for 1 month out of the 7 months remaining this budget
year.

The impact of these cuts for retirees, disabled workers and families will be
devastating.

Please attend a noon rally on March 2nd to support restoring funding to the
Social Security Administration. Click here to see if there is a rally near you.
If you can’t attend a rally, please call your Senators.

Here’s what these cuts will do:

Up to 400,000 people will have their applications for retirement, survivors and
Medicare benefits significantly delayed.
Up to 290,000 people will have their applications for disability benefits
significantly delayed. Unbelievably, it already takes nearly 500 days on
average to have a disability claim resolved.
What’s worse is that these cuts are nothing but cutting for cutting’s sake.
;When we say Social Security doesn’t add a penny to the deficit that goes for
the costs the Social Security Administration incurs making sure that workers
get the benefits they earned. The money you contribute to Social Security
every day you work pays not only for your benefits, but for the Social Security
Administration’s work keeping track of your earnings, so that you get the
benefits you earned.

Please attend a noon rally on March 2nd to support restoring funding to the
Social Security Administration. Click here to see if there is a rally near you.
If you can’t attend a rally, please call your Senators.

The Republican agenda is clear. The party wants to cut, privatize, and
otherwise harm Social Security. This month they are trying to defund the SSA.
In April and May they will try to cut Social Security benefits outright.

It’s up to the U.S. Senate to keep the doors to the SSA open for business.
This could be decided over the next two weeks. We need you to call your
Senators today.

Thanks for fighting to strengthen Social Security,

Melissa Byrne

Statement: Jean Ross on the Defeat of Proposition 24

Following the defeat of Proposition 24, a ballot measure that would have
repealed three recent business tax breaks, Jean Ross, executive director of the
California Budget Project, a nonpartisan public policy research group, released
this statement:

The people of California voted down Proposition 24, which would have repealed
three business tax breaks that will cost the state $1.3 billion or more per
year when they take effect. Voters shouldn't be asked to address complex tax
issues at the ballot box.

Independent research shows that business tax breaks have little impact on job
creation. But the loss of $1.3 billion a year in funding will widen the state's
budget gap and jeopardize funding for schools, health care, and other public
structures that serve the common good. As part of a balanced budget solution,
the Legislature should heed the call of editorial boards and analysts across
the state and scale back these tax breaks to avoid further budget cuts that
could harm the economy, jeopardize our economic competitiveness, and push the
state back into a recession.

Here we are, the day before the election, and only one candidate fro the 26th
State Senate District has answered the League of Women Voter's questions on
State Budget Priorities and Education.

The most recent California Budget was over 100 days late, and hit public
schools, universities, and social services with more cuts. Only one candidate
deals with this on Smart Voter, the non-partisan League of Women Voters public
information resource for voters.

Cindy Varela Henderson is running to defend public education, public services
and jobs by making corporations and California's billionaires pay their share.
Read her views at the League of Women Voters' Smart Voter website:

[LAAMN] Vote for a real Peace Candidate on Tues Nov 2nd

2010-10-31 Thread Cindy Henderson

Neither of the candidates from the major parties have posted anything on the
League of Women Voters' Smart Voter Voter information page. But:

Voters in Santa Monica, Topanga, Pacific Palisades,Malibu, West Hollywood, West
L.A. Brentwood and the West Valley will be able to chose a genuine Peace
candidate who favors Single Payer Healthcare and ending corporate personhood.
Richard Castaldo, 29, is running on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket and
wants voters to hear his views: you can see his positions on the Leauge of
Women Voters Smart Voter Guide:

State Senate Candidate Cindy Varela Henderson Calls for Action Against Budget
Cuts

Emphasizes distinctions from Democratic and Republican candidates
“I’m pro-working family and pro-environment; they’re not.”

Cindy Varela Henderson, the Peace Freedom Party candidate in the
26th Senate District (and the only female Latina in this race), is running to
expose the bankruptcy of tax and budget policies that produce cutbacks and
lay-offs and to offer alternatives, and she’s taking her message door to door
in her district.
“Everyone running talks about being for jobs and education, I’m the
only one with a plan to fund jobs and to fund education,” Henderson said.
“I propose revising 1978’s Proposition 13 by implementing a
split-roll taxation so homeowners and residents are protected and corporations
begin to pay their fair share,” Henderson said. “It is time for the
corporations to pay.”
“I propose implementing an oil severance tax to provide additional
money for the people of this state from the oil industry,” she added. “Other
states do this, why not California?”
“ I propose returning to previous tax rates so the wealthy are
taxed as they used to be,” she said.
She said the current Democrat leadership in Sacramento kept all
these ideas “off the table, and instead chose to agree to massive, devastating
cuts in jobs. education and services.”
“They don’t want to tax the corporations and the rich,” Henderson
said. “The burden on working people is already too great. Working people need
relief from that burden.”
Henderson and campaign volunteers will leave campaign headquarters
at 2617 S. Hauser Blvd in Los Angeles 90016 to knock on doors, talk with
voters, and distribute brochures this weekend October 16-17th and every weekend
til the election Nov. 2.
“We’re emphasizing that this election is historic,” she said, “with
several ballot measures that can either check the power of the corporations and
restore funds to the state treasury and restore some democracy, or can give
away even more of what’s left of California’s resources and the power of
working people to improve their lives.”
“We’re urging No on 23, Yes on 24 and 25, and No on 26,” she said.
“In combination, this would increase state revenues, eliminate the minority
rule over the budget and keep California on track to protect and improve our
environment.”
She criticized her Democrat opponent, Curren Price, for his economic
development proposals as “tried and failed economics. He wants to offer tax
breaks to corporations. The difference couldn’t be more revealing.” She also
noted Price’s recent sponsorship of a bill that would cancel 911 phone service
for people who couldn’t afford a phone and his opposition to a ban on plastic
bags after receiving money from that industry.
“Pro-corporation and anti-environment. This cannot be our future,” she said.
Henderson said her Republican opponent, Nachum Shifren, spends most
of his time “scapegoating immigrants and their alleged impact on education,
classrooms and jobs, as if those are at the bottom of the economic scale are
the reason teachers are underpaid, laid off or furloughed and schools are in
disrepair.” Henderson criticized both of her opponents for apparently having no
memory of when California had the best education system in the country, “and it
was free”, and of having no vision or willingness to try to restore the state
to its former greatness.
“Price’s vision is to administer austerity, Shifren’s vision is to
make it worse,” she said.
Henderson is a phone technician, a member of the Communication Workers of
America, Her campaign website is: www.voteCindy4Senate.com.

My comrade Gary Gordon reprises the Beats with this aptly turned strophe:

In a message dated 10/12/10 9:16:54 AM, ggor...@netvip.com writes:

“I saw the best minds of my generation become progressive democrats, drinking
Obama’s cool-aid, hooking themselves on technological wonders as their work and
wealth was stolen from them, believing that $50/yr to the ACLU would actually
protect their rights as the right wing formed militias and took over school
boards.”

[LAAMN] End of Key Jobs Program:Balancing California's Budget on the Backs of the Poor

With California unemployment statistics at 12.9%, the highest at any time since
the Great Depression neither Democrats and Republicans had the courage to agree
to spending for a statewide jobs program that provided 1,000 jobs per month for
Californians. Read the article fom the California Budget Project posted at:

[LAAMN] California loses another 1,00 0 Jobs a month Because legistlators won't tax the Rich

2010-10-07 Thread Cindy Henderson

With California unemployment statistics at 12.9%, the highest at any time since
the Great Depression neither Democrats and Republicans had the courage to agree
to spending for a statewide jobs program that provided 1,000 jobs per month for
Californians. Read the article fom the California Budget Project posted at:

[LAAMN] FW: [SouthernCaliCoalition] Neither one deserves our votes

If you are an educator whose union has endorsed either gubernatorial candidate,
please consider signing this letter. If you know anyone in such a position,
please forward this email. Thanks!

Thus, in imagination, individuals seem freer under the dominance of the
bourgeoisie than before, because their conditions of life seem accidental; in
reality, of course, they are less free, because they are more subjected to the
violence of things.

Karl Marx, The German Ideology

Neither one deserves our votes

A group of California teachers explain why both the Democratic and Republican
candidates for governor are ready to attack their union--and working-class
families.
September 20, 2010

EDUCATORS IN California face a rotten choice between a rampaging Republican and
a dithering Democrat. Neither major candidate has real answers to solve the
crisis rocking working families in the state.

Meg Whitman's slash-and-burn austerity program is clear enough to everyone.
Jerry Brown, on the other hand, has easily won the endorsements of the
California Federation of Teachers and the California Teachers Association. This
support is undeserved.

Brown said in a recent interview on KCRA, We're going to have to make some
cuts that nobody really looks forward to. He accepts the logic of balancing
the crisis on the backs of state workers, students, the poor and the disabled.
There is not a shred of evidence that he will raise taxes on the rich, close
corporate tax loopholes or campaign to overturn Proposition 13.

In another interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Brown pledged to cut
pensions for public employees. He also referred to low-income families as
criminals and suggested that environmental laws are bad for economic growth.
On education reform, Brown personally championed two charter schools as mayor
of Oakland and failed to restructure that city's notoriously pro-corporate tax
system to actually fund its schools.

In his political career, Brown has been the lead architect of California's
prison-industrial complex. As attorney general, he has overseen a system that
destroys the lives of young men of color as quickly as it saps state resources.
(To be fair, his Web site touts his record of opposing wasteful prison
spending...such as blocking the funding of direly needed new medical facilities
for inmates.)

To add insult to injury, Jerry Brown's losing principles are surpassed only by
his losing campaign.

Giving our money and time to the less evil politician and hoping for the best
is a questionable strategy in good times. But right now we're being hammered by
an economic recession and anti-teacher federal policy worse than the Bush years.

In 2005, a coalition of nurses, firefighters and teachers defeated Arnold
Schwarzenegger's anti-union ballot initiatives by grassroots organizing and
constant public demonstrations. This is a rough blueprint for standing up for
ourselves, no matter who gets elected in November.

It is time to rescind our unions' endorsements of Jerry Brown.

Let's redirect our resources to rebuilding the organizing power inside
California Federation of Teachers and California Teachers Association, the
power that is the lifeblood of unionism. Let's get serious about undoing Prop.
13. Let's give an honest hearing to Green Party and Peace Freedom candidates.
Let's spend our money kick-starting a national drive to fire Arne Duncan and to
put a halt to Race to the Top.

Sincerely,

[LAAMN] Grassrooots KPFK: Vote Now

2010-09-18 Thread Cindy Henderson

please forward widely:

If you care enough to be a member of KPFK, your vote may put help put it back
on course.

Peace and Freedom Party of L.A. urges everyone who is concerned about the
direction our KPFK has been going recently to cast your ballot for all the
candidates on the GrassrootsKPFK slate.

GrassrootsKPFK principles: peace with justice, migrants’ rights, defense of
the earth, gender equity, bilingual and non-English programming, workers’
rights, accountability, transparency, a local focus, and quality broadcasting.
These are the values and goals that reflect our communities and this is what
KPFK should be about.

The candidates on the Grassroots KPFK slate will rejuvenate the station with
an intergenerational and multicultural perspective, and all are active and
effective in community struggles: Brenda Medina, graduate student in Chicana/o
Studies, Aryana Gladney, a single mother and grassroots organizer in the Black
Riders Liberation, Chuck Anderson, Peace and Freedom’s Orange County
chairperso, who is also a leader in O.C. Veterans for Peace and A.C.L.U.
Lawrence Reyes, social worker and union activist in SEIU local 721, and
co-chair of local 721’s Latino/a caucus. Ron Spriestersbach, a lifelong
learner and activist who would like moreKPFK coverage of the environment and
global warming. Michael Novick, retired LAUSD schoolteacher and former union
shop steward , who for years has published a valuable community resource: the
anti-racist newspaper, “Turning the Tide” Lydia Brazon, boldly and
unequivocally calls for more Spanish-language and interlingual programs. All l
these folks have demonstrated their abilities to connect with the community
both listening and leading, and they are who KPFK needs at the helm.
GrassrootsKPFK’s candidates have served on every committee of the Local Station
Board and they all attend Local Station Board meetings.
Read more about them at www.grassrootskpfk.net/candidates

If you’ve been troubled by KPFK’s drift away from community based programming
and “mainstream” programming, if you want KPFK to re-committ to fiscal
transparency, democracy and a commitment to multicultural, multilingual
programming, vote for the Grassroots candidate slate.
Make your vote count by ranking these candidates in whatever order you choose:
Lydia Brazon
Aryana Gladney
Brenda Medina
Michael Novick
Lawrence Reyes
Ron Spriestersbach
 Chuck Anderson

Do not rank candidates that you do not support. Vote now, and mail your vote
now. Your ballot must be received by the station by Septembeber 30, 2010 to be
counted. Help these folks return KPFK to it's true purpose and place as voice
for diversity and class-struggle.

In solidarity,
Cindy Henderson

[LAAMN] Ralph Nader /Stop the Runner Initiativ @ Southern California Library Sat Sept 27

2008-09-24 Thread Cindy Henderson

NADER AT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIBRARY SATURDAY, SEPT. 27

Ralph Nader, Peace Freedom Party candidate for President, will speak on
Proposition 6 (aka the Runner Initiative) and his campaign this Saturday,
Sept. 27, at 9:30am at the Southern California Library for Social Studies
Research, at 6120 S. Vermont Ave., L.A., CA 90044. He will be joined by Vice
Presidential candidate Matt Gonzalez, California State Assembly candidate
Lucilla Esguerra (48th District), and speakers from the Peace Freedom Party
and the Vote No On Prop 6 campaign.

Proposition 6 is another in a series of acts, some successfully passed (like 3
Strikes) that will further criminalize youth and the poor. It is part of the
larger package of efforts that provides for the continuing expansion of the
prison industrial complex, further funding for additional police, cuts in job
training, elimination of after school programs, more sophisticated approaches
to racial profiling

Ralph Nader, known by many as one of the nation's foremost consumer protection
activists, has long been an advocate and activist in the related fields of
social and economic justice and peace, He was endorsed at the Peace Freedom
Party state convention in Sacramento in August and is on the ballot in 45
states-- a record for a third party candidate. He is also a write-in candidate
in four additional states.

For more information on Nader's campaign: www.votenader.org
For more information on the Peace and Freedom Party: www.peaceandfreedom.org
For more information on Prop. 6: www.votenoprop6.com

SAT. SEPT 27th 9:30am-12noon
6120 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90044
(off the 110 Freeway, exit Slauson or Gage).

It's accessible by MTA Bus 204 and Express Bus 754. Street parking is available.

The event is free and open to the public.
Donations to the campaign will be requested

[LAAMN] FW: [pfp-scc] Nader Volunteer, State Party Official Beaten At GOP Convention

2008-09-07 Thread Cindy Henderson

Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2008 12:02:26 -0700 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: [EMAIL
PROTECTED] Subject: [pfp-scc] Nader Volunteer, State Party Official Beaten
At GOP Convention From: Joe Williams / Santa Cruz
 -- Nader Volunteer, State
Party Official Beaten At GOP Convention
 http://newsblaze.com/story/20080906000600.nb/topstory.html September
06,2008 Ralph Nader volunteer, Peace and Freedom state official beaten,
hospitalized at GOP convention; PF Party condemns 'brutal' attack
MINNEAPOLIS - A volunteer with the Ralph Nader for President campaign - and
an official of the Peace and Freedom Party California State Central
Committee - was beaten by police and hospitalized at the Republican
National Convention here in what party leaders condemned as a brutal
assault on Barry Burgess and our liberties. Burgess, elected to the Peace
and Freedom Party Contra Costa County Central Committee and state committee
in June, was attacked distributing literature for the Ralph Nader for
President campaign, according to Kevin Akin, California State Chair, Peace
and Freedom Party. Atkins statement follows: Barry Burgess was handing
out literature for Peace and Freedom presidential candidate Ralph Nader
(and) was the subject of an unprovoked attack by club-wielding police, who
inflicted head injuries and arrested him... he was treated at a hospital
and released, and is now recovering at a Nader supporter's home.
Following similar but smaller attacks on demonstrators in Denver, the
police attacks on peaceful demonstrators in Minneapolis, which have
occurred without any criticism from leaders of the Republican and
Democratic Parties, show how seriously our civil liberties have been
eroded. The Peace and Freedom Party demands accountability from
Minneapolis, Minnesota and federal authorities, and an investigation with
appropriate consequences for those engaging in this mass brutality and
intimidation. We also demand that all the trumped-up charges against those
exercising their constitutional rights be dropped. We anxiously await
further word on the condition of Barry Burgess, and hope that enough
complaints are received by Minneapolis officials to restrain the savage
excesses of their police tonight and tomorrow. We also hope that this
brutal attack on Barry Burgess and our liberties inspires Americans to
examine the real actions and positions of the presidential candidates on
freedom of speech and free assembly. To comment on this story, email to
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

Hi Folks,Too many voters are still stuck with paperless voting
machines—machines that are vulnerable to tampering and malfunction.A new bill
in Congress would ban paperless voting. It's got enough support to pass, but
time is short. This week, the Democratic leadership is deciding what Congress
will take up next. If they don't put voting on the agenda, there simply won't
be time to make the change by the 2008 presidential election. We need Congress
to ban paperless voting before it's too late. Can you help out by signing this
petition to Congress? It's really easy—just click the link
