Just as "sassy" comes from "saucy" (amusingly, my American Heritage
dictionary says "saucy" is a variant od "sassy"; the Concise Oxford --
a Brit "production" -- has it the other way 'round ). Both (and also
"impudent") are closer synonyms for "cheeky" than "ornery" would be.
Just today, I've read about an "ornery" cat, and had no difficulty
imagining it. Can't imagine a "sassy" (or "cheeky") one, though :)

[lace] Tallies

2004-03-21 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Cucumber tallies are made with the workers of 2 areas - 2 trails, or a
diamond block and a trail, and the square tally is worked, then the workers
go back to their respective sides and continue doing what they were doing
before! Cucumber tallies are wider than they are long. - Just another
variation, to keep life exciting!! I think they are mainly used in Beds
lace.
Often there are 2 trails by the footside, and cucmber tallies hold them
together.
