[lace] wedding apron/lace boder/Prague

2004-06-22 Thread Dmt11home
There is a beautiful border which is described as being for a wedding apron
in the museum. It is thought to be Flemish dating from the 17th century. I have
been searching for a portrait of a woman wearing a lace or lace trimmed apron
from that era. I have found several aprons on children, but none on adults
although it appears that it was an adult fashion. If anyone knows of a portrait
showing a fancy lace or lace trimmed apron on an adult, I would like to hear
about it. Supposedly there is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth at Gripsholm Castle
in Sweden. But I am unable to find any mention of it on the internet.
Alternatively, thinking outside the box, I am beginning to look to the
Eastern European Countries and their wedding traditions. I would appreciate it if
anyone who is going to Prague would keep a wary eye out for wedding aprons or
folk costume aprons with elaborate lace borders. The lace in question is an
elaborate tape lace like Milanese with a braided ground reminiscent of
Valenciennes but executed with only two pairs of bobbins and many sewings in the way
that
Russian lace grounds are made.

[lace] new Tonder lace books plus the fun I had there...long!

2004-06-22 Thread Sally Schoenberg
At the Tønder Lace Festival I got three books new to me about Tønder lace.
First book: "Femten Bredere Tønderkniplinger" by Astrid Hansen, has a fine
selection of 15 patterns, roughly half take under 30 pairs, the rest over.
Good photos, patterns, and colored diagrams. I bought the book for the
wonderful wide lace patterns that I've never seen available before. I got
it at the Tønder Museum and was told it was just published. Next,
"Tønder/Tyl 17 mønstre med arbejdstegninger" by Knipling i Denmark,
patterns redrawn by many Danish lacemakers, I think! I don't know any
Danish so I'm guessing. Profuse apologies if I've made any mistakes as I'm
certain I have. Again, well drawn patterns, great colored diagrams, nice
selection running from simple to wide. My third new book is
"Tønderkniplinger og deres navne" by Jette Petersen. It is in Danish like
the first two, published by the Tønder Museum, and has very little writing.
It's mostly photos of 138 different patterns of tonder lace, each of which
is named. The photos are good enough to use as a starting point for drawing
a pattern.

I enjoyed the festival a whole lot. At first I was dismayed to find out how
far my Tourist Bureau assigned accomodations were from everything, but I
found a bicycle shop renting bicycles. As soon as I had some wheels, I was
able to get everywhere fast on the beautiful Danish bicycle trails, and I
didn't miss a single lace event. The crowds of lacemakers were impressive.
On the last day I went on the bus excursion to Rømø. We stopped first at a
mill in Højer. The miller had been a lace merchant as well as a miller, and
his ledgers, lace sample book, a pillow if I remember correctly, thread,
many lengths of fine Tonder lace, and photos of the miller and his family
were on display. Some of us also climbed several levels in the mill and
admired the huge wooden gears inside.

Next we stopped at Lorenzen's Gård in Bådsbøl-Ballum. It is an old family
farmhouse preserved as a museum by the Lorenzen family. It has a very fine
collection of long lengths of Tønder lace collected by Hansigne Lorenzen who
lived at the farm with her husband from 1890 until she died in 1952.
Hansigne's daughter Cathrine continued her mothers interest in preseving
Tønder lace, she made lace and taught lacemaking at the farm which she
inherited. It says in the brochure that the school and farm are open to the
public every July 2pm to 6pm and weekend courses in Tønder lacemaking are
held at the farm every spring and autumn. There's a website:
www.lorenzensgaard.dk

The third place we visited was The National Museum Commodore's Farm on Rømø.
It's a farmhouse built in the 1700's and hardly changed since. Only a tiny
bit of lace was displayed, on a woman's costume, if I remember correctly,
but the house and barn were very interesting. My only regret about the
excursion was that I didn't take "Tønderkniplinger og deres navne" with me.
That's the book with all the photos of Tønder lace. It would have been nice
to note in my book where I had seen displayed the lace pictured in the book.

Another regret, I didn't take with me my list of participants so I could
note down who I met. What with all the crowds, and the different languages,
my memories now resemble a whirlwind. One thing is certain, lacemakers are
such nice people all over the world.

[lace] more on the CDs

2004-06-22 Thread Tess1929
Here is the web site URL in case you want to see what we have put on the CDs
and what has been scanned since the last ones were published.

A number of people have asked if I will be bringing CDs to Prague. I don't
plan to do so--after all, I have to bring lacemaking supplies and clothes!
So if you want them, please let me send them to you in the usual way: it would
really be a lot easier for me. I'll be sending them out up until the 6th of
July. After that, orders will have to wait to be sent out until I get back
in August, although I can certainly receive emails while I am gone.

Also, a note especially to Americans: please remember that the PayPal account
was set up for those people who don't have access to US funds. I have to
pay a fee for every transaction, and although it isn't enormous it does add up
over the long run. But for anyone from the far corners of the world (can you
believe Surinam, Korea, South Africa, and of course Down Under!), it certainly
is convenient and I'm very happy that this option is available.

Some people are just finding out about the CDs so are asking for CDs 1&2. I
have about 10 left of each--I have 150 of CDs 3&4!--so if you want them
please let me know right away. If there is a demand for more I'll have to do
another edition later.

Thanks to all for your little notes of appreciation. The Professor is
pleased to know that we are grateful to him. By the way, we are just putting The
Romance of Lace by Thomas Wright on the site.

No more scanning for me until after I get back--whee! I hope to meet lots
of you in Prague.

RE: [lace] Sally Barry's books and lace

2004-06-22 Thread Clay Blackwell
My copy of Knipling 3 has the picture in the section which is described as
examples of reconstructions after old laces. No pricking or diagram.

I have a feeling that the pricking and diagram were available in Tonder at
one of the festivals or workshops.

Yesterday, I finally got the translation for the journal, "Kniplebrevet".
I was most interested in reading about the handkerchief. However, this
morning as I gave the magazine and the translation a closer look, I noticed
the following on p. 76/26: In an article about Drøhse's House (about
half-way down...) it says that there is a retrospective exhibit featuring
the work of Astrid Hansen (who made the wedding handkerchief). It goes on
to say that the Tønder Museum is publishing a book in conjunction with the
exhibit which will have 14 lace patterns with prickings and diagrams, will
have English and German translations within, and is to be released this
month! This is definitely something we need to seek out, IMO!! The Big
Heart corner may not be in the book, but chances are the straight lace
will, as it is one of her favorites.

Sally said the pattern for the Big Danish Hearts is in Karen Trend
Nissing's
book "Knipling 3". And the smaller lace on the other two sides is
Little
Danish Hearts.
It is in this book but only as a picture not as a pricking.

What era are we speaking of? Are we speaking of an entire lace dress or one
with a lot of lace on it, collars, flounces, etc? Are you trying to get the
detail of what the lace looks like, or a more vague Gibson Girl effect?
I actually don't know of a web-site with a huge selection of lace clothing,
but auction sites like Whitaker and Doyle sometimes have vintage clothing
pictured and various museums have lace clothing on their web sites such as the MFA
in Boston. http://www.mcny.org/Collections/costume/worth/worth.htm is a
collection of clothing by the designer Worth at the Museum of the City of New York
much of it very lacy.
I recently ran a search on the NY Public Library's online picture collection
on lace and saw many fashion prints. The site is

Re: [lace] Reference pictures

2004-06-22 Thread Avital Pinnick
It would help if you could be more specific about the types of lace that interest you.
For a broad selection of different types, www.lacefairy.com has good close-ups of
lace. If you're interested in something larger, say, Irish crochet wedding dresses,
there are many vintage clothing sellers that provide excellent close-up shots (when
you're looking at a $4000 price tag, they'd better). Ebay also has good shots,
depending on how meticulous the seller is.

When you narrow your choice down to certain kinds of lace, it will be easier to
suggest Web sites.
