[lace] Computer

2005-06-28 Thread delia.palin
Hello everybody!

I am having loads of trouble with my computer and can only get online once a
day, if I am lucky. 'They' say it could be weeks before it is sorted out
properly. However, I am still intending to participate in Secret Pal etc, but
please don't be worried if I can't post things online as quickly as I should.

If anyone needs me my telephone number is 01594 510519 (UK). If I have real
problems, I will try to get in touch with Brenda by phone.

Thank you.

I don't have any colours at all now, or even white, just a few spools of ecru.
He can't find anyone to spin it onto the small reels we use, so I won't
be able to get any more once his stock has run out - a shame because (IMO) it
is the best Bucks Point thread I've ever used. I also have 120/2 in
white which I use for my honiton. He has quite a large stock of that so I will
be selling it for a while yet.
Colours in 80/2 are difficult to find and I think the range in Cotona is
insipid. I have used Madeira Rayon 40 for Bucks but it works up more like a
50 Cotton than an 80. For bright colours the biggest choice is silk.

RE: [lace] membership

2005-06-28 Thread Avital
Er, sort of. If someone were to decide to post in Ugaritic or Swahili, there's
nothing anyone could do to prevent it, except to unsubscribe that person after
the fact. We can't *force* someone to write in English in advance! But we do
prefer that you post in English.

As for fees, there isn't a licensing fee. Liz is a sys admin at panix.com. She
set up Arachne and configured the permissions, but once it's up and running it
doesn't cost anything (except time) to keep it going. No organization collects
fees for allowing you to run an e-mail list. You could buy a server (these days
it looks like an ordinary PC), install list software, configure your own list,
connect to the Internet, and -- voila -- you are a list owner.

When I was at the Hebrew University I was the owner of the longest continuously
running Jewish studies list. There weren't many lists in those days because you
had to have access to a computer system that could be secured (i.e., someone
couldn't come in and switch it off or change things), you had to be able to
install majordomo, and to know the commands to set up the list. Now it's very
easy to set up and maintain lists because organizations like Yahoogroups do all
the background work and maintenance. They've made the server commands very easy
with a Web interface (no more typing terse list commands and sending them to an
anonymous server). Yahoogroups doesn't charge for lists either. They just
subject you to advertisements unless you choose the 'paid' version, because
they're in the business to make money.

Best wishes,

Avital

2005-06-28 Thread Avital
The short answer is "No, not easily." Obviously, just about everything a
computer does is time-stamped somewhere and if I had access to the server logs
and the time to search back several years I could probably find out when you
subscribed. But since I'm a moderator, not a system admin, and only have access
to the usual range of majordomo commands, I can't find out when you signed on.
If we had a complete set of archives somewhere that would make the job easier,
but we don't.

Best wishes,

[lace] using coloured threads for Bucks

2005-06-28 Thread Bev Walker
Hi everyone

If you can't get the WHall threads, Mettler 60/2 is reasonably 'fine' (the
term is relative - quite fine for machine sewing, fine enough for
Buckspoint ) - and comes in many colours. The best way to use mulitple
colours in Bucks, and avoid random crisscrossing or too much thread
fiddling - do honeycomb sts rather than the diagonal ground.
Go here to see a nice picture:
http://home.metroweb.co.za/~cooke/whatnow.htm
and if you can obtain a copy of Colour: What Now, for more info on
colour in Buckspoint, so much the better ;)

For thread junkies, if all you have to work with are the Heirloom threads
from YLI, a tip I just learned from Jeri on a somewhat unrelated thread
topic (rayon I think, yes?) - run the thread through a damp cloth before
winding onto the bobbin (allow a minute for it to dry, maybe do this on a
dry - as in weather - day). One pass removes most of the starch! Actually
I haven't tried this with YLI, but I did experiment with a stiff
variegated thread for serging, voila the stiffness disappeared and I had a
pleasantly pliable strand for lace :))

Yes, it was, but only up to a point. If you unsubscribed and then
resubscribed (for whatever reason), you lost "seniority", and went back
to the end of the queue :) So, after a year or so, if you took a couple
of holidays, or had been involuntarily unsubscribed, you ended looking
like a newcomer I subscribed - for the first time - June 15, '95
(took my son full 24 hrs to stop laughing and *help*, when I complained
that all my attempts came back rejected. Well, how was I supposed to
know that one didn't address the Majordomo as "Dear Sir"?) But, within
6 months, I was no longer #56 on the list; I changed providers and
e-address, unsubscribed the old one and subscribed the new and,
abracadabra, there I was, somewhere in the middle hundreds...

Re: first Anniversary Commemoratives... Some of us might not have felt
- at the time - that the ones coming out of UK and painted by Margaret
Wall were as "legitimate" as the ones done by JoAnne Pruitt in the US,
but '96 was, indeed, the year in which *two* Commemorative bobbin
styles were available (which is why I got both; "belt and suspenders"
being safer ).

Afterwards, we only had one "true" one, because the maker, design, etc
no longer went through the "committee of 200" (yes, that's about all
the membership there was at that 1st anniversary ). JoAnne took
charge, did all the negotiations, and made sure that all who wanted to
make them got a chance to bid, and that the best bid would win - take
it or leave it, that design and maker was *it* for that year. Much
easier all around :)

The "special occasion" bone bobbin that Clay mentioned was, I think, an
Archer one, for "Arachne '98" gathering in Nottingham, UK. Like the 1st
Anniversary Commemorative, it was also commissioned by Pat Hallam, who
organised the whole adventure. Those were the days... I've not seen
some of the *American* friends I met there, since; never mind the Brit
ones...

I also do not recommend YLI Heirloom thread for lacemaking. I have tried
it, and learned that it is cotton, "glazed" with a stiff starch which makes
it unfriendly to bobbin-lace. It did not cooperate with being hitched on a
bobbin - double or otherwise - and because it is so firm, it did not
"marry" its neighbors, resulting in a gauge which was not consistent with
its purported size.

On the other hand, fellow guild-mates who do heirloom sewing swear by it
for that purpose, so it's a case of using it for the purpose for which it
was designed!!

At one time, there was a means of finding out who belonged to the list by
sending a query to Majordomo. For some reason (security, as I recall...)
that may not be available. And if I'm not mistaken, the list was
chronological. So if you found yourself on the list, you could determine
when you joined by figuring out when the people above and below you joined
the list. My guess is that the queries are still possible, but may be
restricted to our list moderator, Avital?

Hello Angela

Try a patchwork/quilting shop for YLI heirloom sewing 70/2 or 100/2. I
think they come in colours, but I don't know how big the colour ranges
are. Other than that Pipers silks do colours in their ranges - you are
probably looking at spun silk 210/2 or twisted silk 4/20

How are you planning to use colour in Bucks point, other than for the

[lace] Re ten-stick again

2005-06-28 Thread Karen
Dear Helen,

Whenever possible, I would plan to finish a ten stick by sewing it to a
previously completed section of ten stick.

Where this is not possible, you could try throwing back a passive pair
(next to the foot edge) in a couple of rows towards the end. Work to end,
tie off all pairs. Cross two outer pairs beneath all threads and tie (reef
knot and a half) above. The bundle can then be laid flat against the braid,
and the pairs previously thron back tied to hold it in place. I would try a
sample first, to see if it works, but certainly in Honiton this is a finish
for ending a braid at a point. I see no reason why it cannot be adapted to
ten stick, though it might work better with a rib which has more pairs
rather than fewer.

The long thin things look rather like fancy cocktail sticks - belied by
the fancy images around the photo, and with damaged ends to boot!
Many years ago I needed a couple of extra pairs to get around a corner,
and wanted them *now* couldn't wait for mail order so I used some
little plastic cocktail forks (2 prongs) with handles very similar to
these. I used a hot knife to 'weld' the ends of the prongs together so
that I could add a spangle and hey presto improvised bobbins!

As for the two round items, I suppose you could lay one on top of a BL
pillow, stick pins in the holes and use it to make Tenneriffe/Sol lace

And...No, there is no Arachne Membership Bobbin that I've heard of. We do have
a membership pin. JoAnn, are there any left?

Hi All!
I am out of the enamel logo pins that we had made up a couple of years back, is
there any interest in me getting more? I did have a thought, how about
patches? I saw a web site that does them, and they can do really involved
designs with different colors. Just a thought.
As for the 1st year bobbins, I did those, does anyone remember that pointy head
I did on them? Margaret Wall, to my knowledge, has never done any of the
bobbins that were the "official" Lace@arachne.com bobbins, but we have had
others putting out their own Commeratives.
I am SO glad to hear that we will have the Lacing with wire class after all, at
the IOLI convention, I was just about to cry when I heard it might be
cancelled. I am going to try to be the best student I can, so the teacher does
not regret comming!
Pure joyful sigh!
JoAnne Pruitt
P.S.
Pat Hallam is going to bring the rest of her Commeratives for this year, so if
you do want some and are comming, you will have a chance. I will also be
bringing ALL commeratives from previous years, so you can look those over and
fill in missing items.

RE: [lace] Craft, Hobby & Stich International at NEC Birmingham

2005-06-28 Thread Andrea Lamble
Hi Ann,

You could try http://www.necgroup.co.uk

where their will be links to what's on at the NEC - a cursory glance
showed a trade only Hobby & Stitch exhibition but that is in Feb 2006. I
couldn't see anything relevant for July/August this year.

Hope this helps Best wishes, Andrea from a rather warm and sunny
Cambridge, UK
