[lace] I won a drawing

2005-12-12 Thread Tess Parrish
It has been some time since the lovely sparkling spider arrived in my
mailbox all the way from England, thanks to Pauline and the gods who
decide who wins drawings. I had of course written my thanks to Pauline
and had sent Arachne my delight at such an unexpected gift.

Then odd things happened. I couldn't find a couple of important
Professor-related postings, so I wrote Avital to see if they had
appeared. She did a careful search, found nothing, and suggested that
I go into my Mail folders and see what might be lurking. She was
right, of course: there were four unsent emails, one thanking Pauline
for the spider and another the missing posting telling you all how
delighted I was to receive such an unexpected present.

For some reason, the computer had decided that it didn't want to work
that day (even Macs have off days!) and all my efforts had gone for
naught. Well, it's all sorted out now, and I just want everyone to be
sure to know that the beautiful sparkly spider has an honored spot on
my beret and that I am very grateful indeed for Pauline's generosity.

We are all so lucky to have Arachne to brighten our lives. Thanks,
Avital, for clearing up the mystery. And thanks, Pauline, for thinking
of me.

[lace] Christmas lace exchange

2005-12-12 Thread Annelore Stone
Hello,

This morning I received not just one, but two Christmas decorations from Chris
Vail from Illinois! One is a tatted ornament done from a picture on Mark
Meyer's Tat-Man site. It is done in 3 colors. Very nice. The other one is
Snowland, a knit Christmas ornament created by Chris! It is a green
Christmas tree, outlined in a darker green and having tiny bead decorations, a
white surrounding background, all in a gold covered wire frame with a hanger
to put on a Christmas tree or on a window. That really turned out very nice!
Thank you so much, Chris!

Our lace meeting is this coming Saturday, and I will take these ornaments and
the one I received from Jane Dobinson last week along for show and tell.

Thank you so much, Bev, for organizing this exchange!

[lace] lace card

2005-12-12 Thread
Dearest spiders and especially Carol in Salem, Oregon, USA,
Today the mailman brought a beautiful Torchon Christmas ornament with a
little dove charm. The package only took 7 days to get here - I was so
afraid it would get lost, as I'm learning other things are getting lost in
transit. (in all fairness, the Postal Service is doing pretty good. The
commercial shippers are way behind). Anyway... the ornament is green
sparkly thread, kind of a circle with the little dove in the center, and
CLEAN!! Since I don't own a digital camera, I'll take it to the office and
get a picture of it there.

cleanliness - nothing disparaging against Carol, my other ornaments were
rather nasty thanks to evil roaches. And I get excited over any little bit
of good news these days.

[lace] Cretan lace

2005-12-12 Thread Tess Parrish
I have just been asked if it is possible to buy the little book on
Cretan lace which was put out by the Greek lacemakers some years ago
and which will be the subject of one of the workshops at the OIDFA
Congress in May. Here is what I wrote:

The easiest way to get this book is to download it from
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/lace.html Go to the site,
then click on Books, then scroll down about 10 books until you come to
:

You will see that the book is in the original Greek, a complete English
translation, and a French one. The English and French are both in the
Western alphabet. The Greek is of course the original. It is not a
large book, so you shouldn't have too much trouble downloading it. As
it is a small paperback, you would be getting pretty much exactly the
same as buying the book in Greece.

You can also find it on lace CD#1.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: little Old lady and Football

2005-12-12 Thread Tamara P Duvall

Haven't seen this one before... Beware of little old ladies :)

From: L.F.

A little old lady is walking down the street, dragging two
plastic garbage bags with her, one in each hand There's a hole in one
of the bags, and every once in a while a $20 bill is flying out of it
onto the pavement.

Noticing this, a policeman stops herMa'am, there are $20 bills
falling out of that bag...

Damn! says the little old lady.I'd better go back and see if I
can still find some. Thanks for the warning!

Well, now, not so fast, says the cop. How did you get all that
money? Did you steal it?

Oh, no, says the little old lady. You see, my back yard backs up to
the parking lot of the football stadium. Each time there's a game, a lot
of fans come and pee in the bushes, right into my flower beds!

So, I go and stand behind the bushes with a big hedge clipper,
and each time someone sticks his little thingie through the bushes, I
say: $20 or off it comes!

Hey, not a bad idea! laughs the cop. OK, good luck! By the way,
what's in the other bag?

Well, says the little old lady, not all of them pay up

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: Irish Humour

2005-12-12 Thread Tamara P Duvall
I've had a whole slew of not-so-new-but-funny jokes over the last week,
and am trying to decide which ones are old enough to be worth
re-posting... I assume all three are sitting in a bar in US or else Oz.
If you remember the joke, apologies :)

From: D. C.

An Irishman, an Englishman and a Scot were sitting in a bar. The view
was fantastic, the beer excellent, and the food exceptional.

Y'ken, said the Scotsman, I still prefer the pubs back home. Why, in
Glasgow there's a wee bar called McTavish's. Now, the landlord there
goes out of his way for the locals so much that when you buy 4 drinks,
he will buy the 5th drink for you.

Well, said the Englishman, at my local, The Red Lion, the barman
there will buy you your 3rd drink after you buy the first two.

Ahhh, that's nuttin, said the Irishman. Back home in Dublin there's
O'Driscoll's Bar. Now, the moment you set foot in the place they'll buy
you a drink, then another, all the drinks you like. Then, when you've
had enough drinks, they'll take you upstairs and see that you get laid.
All on the house.

Well, said the Englishman, did this actually happen to you?

Not me myself, personally, no, said the Irishman, but it did happen
to me sister.

In Oriental way of thought
Life's balance you maintain.
For every Yin there is a Yang
For every joy some pain

And so for some who love to lace
With thread as light as feather,
The other side's a motor bike
Complete with full black leather.

But maybe there's a common thread
That these two joys might bind
To lose yourself in what you do
And escape the daily grind!
