Re: [lace] Inspirations, pub. by Country Bumpkin, Australia (Long)
I can only agree with Jeri. I subscribe to the Smocking and Embroidery magazine from the same publishers. I suffer from sewing needle phobia and just looking at the pictures has inspired me to start smocking for the grandchildren. The grandchildren are fortunately not critical of the garments and the parents are even more inept with a sewing needle than I am, so the garments are much appreciated!! Fortunately one does not need a sewing needle to make lace!! [lace] technical list question
Dear List, Who knows the answer to this one? I sent a note to the list (and to myself as well) concerning the Halas lace on ebay and received notice of removed attachments. I did not include any attachments. When I wrote to the moderator for help, I received a note saying that address doesn't function. I am also a smocker and subscribe to the Smocking and Embroidery magazine..automatic shipment from Creative Needle (www.smocking.com). They seem to also have some backordered Inspiration magazines on their site, under All Sale. I have never seen one of the Inspiration magazines and didn't think that they might contain some lace projects. Do they? All of the Bumpkin publications are absolutely gorgeous and very inspiring. Hello Kate Your message to Arachne came through fine, but at the end of it there is [demime 1.01d removed an attachment of type image/gif which had a name of rtCurve.gif] [demime 1.01d removed an attachment of type image/gif which had a name of s.gif] That means that there were two attachments, both .gif files, which the system hss stripped out. My guess is that your email system is set up to include a couple of small files in the signature. Sometimes a message comes through to me twice, because the sender has clicked 'reply all'. The message directly to my email address comes through as html or with an attachment whilst the Arachne list version is just plain text. These days it's not so critical as most computers have web browsers, high speed internet connections and big memories, but the *correct* way is to send plain text email messages and keep the html for web pages. (I think I've been buying them in the UK for a few years, and only recently succumbed to temptation over here). Carolyn Hastings Stow, MA USA I have never seen one of the Inspiration magazines and didn't think that they might contain some lace projects. Do they? All of the Bumpkin publications are absolutely gorgeous and very inspiring. Jude in WY USA -- Carolyn: There appears to be a recent change that includes printing in England for the US (and Canadian?) market. The binding has thickened to one that can be read when placed on a bookshelf. The announcement of name change in UK appeared in this issue - #55, p. 2. Perhaps that is because there is already a magazine named Inspirations in England? As I warned, there is a paper crafts magazine named Inspirations in US stores, so be specific if you ask the service desk of a book store to reserve a copy for you. Jude: Sorry I was not clear enough because I did not think it necessary to give details of things that might not be of interest to Arachnes. #8 told of additional features in this issue that were of usual content: Other articles feature ribbon embroidery, traditional embroidery, embellishments with beads and buttons, applique, goldwork. This is the normal range of topics in 'Inspirations'. Jude: Inspirations is about embroidery most of the time. They are particularly good with articles and instructions for stumpwork (technically, this is made with needlelace stitches), silk embroidery, ribbon embroidery, beading, wool embroidery and applique on garments and baby blankets. It is a magazine of instructions. Everyone: Lacemakers need to understand that in some embroidery communities, including The Embroiderers' Guild of America, they often classify any decorative stitching made with a threaded needle as being embroidery.I believe this is true in the English, Canadian and Australian Embroiderers' Guilds, as wellIn my memo, paragraph 4 (above the numbered list), it says to ask an embroiderer who collects the magazine about lace content of each issue before purchasing. (It's such a special magazine, it is often enclosed in a clear, sealed, wrapper. Sometimes they enclose a special little gift - this issue that I reviewed had a small booklet of step-by-step bead embroidery instructions.) If you want to learn how to make lace with a needle, the Embroiderers' Guilds offer wonderful instruction to members via correspondence courses and seminars. I learned these techniques at EGA, long before I joined lace guilds. If you collect embroidery or lace, you often find both embroidery and lace on garments and household linens. Same is true of content of some needlework books. Often embroidery on a combination piece helps to date and identify the whole, including the lace. It is for these reasons that I acknowledge both in Lace and Embroidery Resource Center. Re: [lace] Halas lace flower on ebay
In a message dated 9/23/07 10:52:21 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The petals in this flower look like the trademark fish symbol built into Halas laces. WHat an interesting and unusual piece of Halas Needlelace! 150162952891 Kate Henry Indiana USA Dear Kate, I have one of thes 3-D wired lace flowers from Kiskunhalas. The 3 crossed fish symbol is not worked into any of the petals. It is an exception to the usual - that all Halas laces made in Kiskunhalas contain the trademark. A similar flower, but with two layers and a total of 10 petals appears on page 234 of the book Halasi Csipke or Halas Lace or Halaser Spitze - one book, a three language title. My flower was made by a lacemaker pictured in the book, now retired. It was my honor to be invited to her home for lunch - a lovely memory. People who do not know much about Halas lace should know that it is still made, and it is expensive per square inch. The lacemaker who made my lace has been known to take the train to Budapest to deliver tiny laces. There has been history of mailed laces in envelopes from Kiskunhalas disappearing. It is a slow local train, and would take a day for the round trip. Oh! What a lacemaker and a collector will do for lace! [lace] Needle lace
As every now and then one of us spiders writes something wistful about wanting to make needle lace, I thought it might be nice actually to do something about it. [lace] Needle lace
Thanks for posting this Aurelia. I'm a rank beginner in needlelace and my embroidery guild has asked me to teach it to them in the Spring. I've warned them that it will be 'the one-eyed leading the blind', but they insist. So your blogs are sure to help me out. I agree with Brenda that a sig (or possibly stationery) was the source of the attachments. As far as I can tell, my moderator address (at the bottom of this email) is working properly. I received a couple test messages but did not receive anything from Kate. Probably Yahoo had a temporary problem. Re: [lace] Needle lace
Dear Aurelia, Thank you ever so much for the instructions you posted on your blog. I once took a needle lace workshop with the local chapter of EGA, but since I had just begun having arthritis in my hands, I felt under pressure to keep up with others in the class so gave it up. Maybe I'll have another go at it...Let us know when you post another lesson. [lace-chat] Dream interpretation
Is anyone good at interpreting dreams? I had the oddest one I've ever had last night (not the most scary or the most wierd, but odd): Baby birds, still blind and without feathers, but able to walk, were in queue on the roof of a two storey house and were jumping off one at a time. I was on the ground underneath trying to catch them before they splatted on the concrete path below. I caught about two thirds of them, put them, put them on the ground, and they ran off into long grass. Hadn't seen anything in real life or on TV even remoted connected with anything like that, and I'm perfectly happy in all respects. I do have odd dreams from time to time, but this is the oddest.
