Re: [lace] Steel lace

2008-01-01 Thread Ilske Thomsen

Thanks Tamara and Tonie for sharing ths with us.
The Gallery link was in two ways interesting for me. The second was the
eahibition of Edward Mapplethorpe's new works. There was an artikle in
an Art-magazine shortly about his live first beside his older and in
former time very famous brother. And meanwhile his new and succesful
start as foto-artist.

Thanks again

Ilske

[lace] Advent calendar quiz - winners and answers

2008-01-01 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Many thanks to everyone who took the time to keep looking at the
calendar and entering the quiz.
I had a total of 12 entries from lacemakers and seven from family
historians, and there were very few really wrong answers so I marked
very strictly and I'm pleased to tell you that the winners are:

Threads for lace Ed 4 book - Rosemary Darrah
£5-00 Census Voucher - Michele Morris

Rosemary and Michele, well done to both of you. Will you eac please
email your postal addresses to me so that I can send you your prizes.

The full list of correct answers is to be found at
http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/adventcalendar/answers.htm
or click on the link from my homepage

I enjoyed putting it all together. Initially the advent calendar was a
cut and paste job but it was heavily edited to make it my own and then
I did all the question pages myself. The fact that all the submitted
entries had answers to all the questions with very few guesses has told
me that family historians and lacemakers are able to navigate around
the site, so presumably the navigation links are OK.

Happy New Year to everyone

Tamara, thanks for the Cal Lane NY Times article. Not only was the lacy
spade intriguing, but the article was about sharing, contributing, and
caring for artists. A wonderful beginning to our 2008 New Year.

[lace] Re Advent calendar quiz

2008-01-01 Thread Brenda Paternoster
I've left the quiz in place for a few more days with the doors all
permanently opened, but I've deleted the entry form from the number 24
window. Links from the top of my homepage.

I've also added the current date to my homepage.
It's working in Safari and FireFox but seems to have stuck at 30
December 2007 in Internet Explorer (version 5.2 for Mac). Would
someone with a Windows machine and a later version of IE please let me
know if it's working with that.

[lace] Winter IOLI issue

2008-01-01 Thread Beth Mccasland
Wooo Hooo, my winter IOLI issue arrived in yesterday's mail! Just so
happens I was looking at my printed copy of Le Pompe II (from the
Professor's web site), trying to do the mental gymnastics on how to do some
of the figures, when I heard my mailbox rattle. Saved by the Blast from
the Past issue! Thank you to all the authors! Which reminds me I need to
get working on my article on the remaking of the lace of the 16th century
fashion doll.

Cal Lane was one of the artists I mentioned in my review of the Radical Lace
exhibit in the IOLI Bulletin. In that exhibit she had an entire lacy car
with dirt sifted through the design like sugar through a paper doily on a cake.

Re: [lace] Nativity Scene

2008-01-01 Thread Antje González
Hello Eva,

I hope you don't mind me correcting you. I am not the moderator of this
Spanish group anymore, being one of the reasons that a few participants kept
breaking copyright rules all the time and causing problems. The owner of the
group is another person. Carolina and me being the moderators only tried to
make it work in a professional and legal way. To have a group similar to
Arachne was obviously our aim. But, unfortunately, we have given up.
Patience has its limits.

I already got in touch with JO to tell her that the Nativity shown in
encajebolillos was a picture taken by someone who went to Vamberk Museum.
So, it seems that the designer of the Nativity is from Czechia.

Many greetings and a happy new year.

Antje, from Guadalajara, Spain.

[lace] Bundling bobbins

2008-01-01 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Maybe I'm re-inventing the wheel, but ...

When working on a piece that uses lots of bobbins, I bundle my Midlands
bobbins together when not being used in lots of about 6 pair through the
spangles with a piece of nylon cord, the ends of which I've dipped in clear
nail polish to form a firm point.

I've found that if I twist this bundle three or four times before I put it
aside, then the threads don't loop up and snag on my pins. And it's easy,
when retrieving the bundle for use, to just twist it in the opposite
direction before taking the cord out. It could perhaps work for continental
bobbins held by crocheted holders too.

Pinning them back in batches has never worked for me.

RE: [lace] Bundling bobbins

2008-01-01 Thread Beth Mccasland
My personal favorite is knitting cable stitch holders - looks like big
safety pins. I have a variety of sizes from ones that hold only about 4
midlands to ones that hold a dozen or more. I do twist them up and out of
the way, sometimes over a spare cover cloth (lg men's hankie). Of course
this would only work with spangled bobbins, not with continentals.
