RE: [lace] Admiration
Dear all, I agree: it is refreshing and inspiring to browse through everyone elses projects. I recall a comment from a newbie about not creating their own album at webshots. I say to anyone who thinks this; start one to compare projects back to. There are always people just starting out who I'm sure would like to see similar levels of work as well as what hard work can achieve. Also I don't rate my work that highly but everyone gives me lovely feedback to build confidence. I thank Dot, Daphne and Sue for their nice comments on my work especially as I have no group or class to confirm what I'm doing. I'm sure others out there use this list as their only support too- I would be interested to know how many others are doing this? Tamara, I got the same message and I expect others have to. Mine had the added line: Now I know why the seller told you to get lost. I certainly wouldn't want buyers as callous as you. I think the seller must be using the email (person's name) link on the archives. I did bother to trawl the archives, and found four of us had posted on Antique Vintage Unusual Ivory Pineapple Bobbin Lace on ebay. The first was from Clay saying that she'd politely pointed out to the seller that the item wasn't hand made and got an abusive response. Barbara Joyce wrote to the seller as well, but didn't say if she got a response. Tamara posted to 'Lace' saying the item wasn't active any more. I posted to 'Lace' to say that the description would be covered by the Sale of Goods Act in the UK and that an inaccurate description means the seller wouldn't be targeting the right buyers. Barbara posted to 'Lace' again saying I was being too charitable. And Clay trying to be helpful to a seller sparked abusive emails to at least Tamara and me. Re: [lace] eBay
Hello Sister Claire When you go on ebay, you can see a menu Search Options. Type in what you are looking for (e.g. lacemaking bobbins) and leave at all categories. Go down and tick the box Worldwide - and click on show items. You'll get a lot more results coming up then. Ebay is making it more difficult to find what you are looking for, e.g. if you put an item on ebay UK and lit it as worldwide, it does not automatically come up on all ebay sites. An other alternative is to search ebay by country: e.g. ebay.co.uk - ebay.ie etc. Hope this helps. Agnes Boddington- Ellougthon UK Sister Claire wrote: I just took my first look at eBay. Re: [lace] eBay
Hello Sister Claire - Try doing a search. Enter the words (lace, lacemaking) and see what you come up with. If you use the parentheses, you'll get a search on any or all of the terms. If you don't use the parentheses, you'll only find items which contain all of the terms. You may want to do a search that identifies various kinds of lace, as in lace(Bucks, Bedfordshire, Honiton, Flanders, Duchesse). The quotation marks would not be part of your search string, but the parentheses would be. This will find items that are described as lace with any of the words within the parentheses as descriptors. As you play around, you'll discover lots of junk that you don't want to see and can refine your search string so that you eliminate those things before they even pop up on the screen. [lace] Lace in Portugal
Just back from Portugal, and visited both Via do Conde and Peniche. Unfortunately the school in Via do Conde was closed on the Saturday that I went, but the handicrafts shop around the corner had lots of lace and lacemaking equipment. Picked up some nice pieces and also a huge Portugese bolster pillow with the tubular hollow center, bobbins, a beautiful wooden floor stand for the pillow, and a book on Via do Conde lace (excellent glossary with Portugese lacemaking terms). It was an adventure getting the pillow through customs on the way back, but at least saved the shipping costs. The center in Peniche was open with about 10 women working when I visited. Got lots of photos and some really beautiful pieces. There's a wonderful lace that I was told was a typical Peniche type - sort of a Torchon/Cluny combined, lots of small tallies. The square piece I bought took 2 months to complete, and it was my great honor to be able to pay the maker directly. The center also had a book specifically on Peniche lace, again with patterns. I was really impressed with the quality of work that they were doing, and also with the amount of contemporary designs for sale. They also had some great large Torchon-type pieces made with very fine thread. Both these seaside towns are very beautiful - wouldn't mind staying in either for a few days. All of this will go into my lace exhibition, which is now scheduled to open in Los Alamos July 5th. Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions of where to visit in Portugal! Re: [lace] Magnifiers
Hello, everyone, I'm back and resubscribed to lace. Shirlee, I wouldn't be caught making lace without my magnifier nearby. I bought mine many years ago from SMP when they first came out, and now Holly and Lacy Susan, and perhaps other suppliers, carry them. It pins on the pillow with a couple of pins and the magnigier is on a flexible arm to allow its manipulation. It is easily stored with other necessities to take with you. I don't use it all the time but the magnifier can be pushed aside and brought into play at will. You'll be *very* happy to have one, in my opinion. I can't bear the head wraps, the cords around my neck or any of the other various magnifications available. I use a pair of 3.5 drugstore reading glasses for sewing. They are half glasses, so I can look over them if I want to see who has come into the room, and they fit into a container like a toothbrush case, so I can always have them in my pocket. I don't have any problem wearing them over my prescription glasses -- since my eyes don't match, the only alternative to wearing magnifiers over my glasses would be prescription magnifiers. I tried a magnifier that fits round the head, and couldn't get it to focus. I use both a magnifier with a flexible arm that pins to the pillow. It's easy just to push the magnifier out of the way when you don't need it, and I only pin it on the pillow when I'm going to need to use it over a period of time. I also use a linen tester and a small folding, hand-held small magnifier if it's just for a quick check on something. Wouldn't be without any of them. Re: [lace] Magnifiers
Yes, yes, yes! I wouldn't do without mine when working with fine thread. I actually have three of them, two different styles. They pin on the pillow (takes a little room) and have an adjustable/bendable neck to position the glass where you want it. I find that using the mirror makes the threads look like average sized thread instead of fine thread. I forget that I'm using such tiny thread. Try to have your light coming slightly from the side. A light fixture just overhead might reflect in the glass. Some hotel conference rooms have been a challenge to position my pillow so I didn't get reflections. My first magnifier had a very heavy metal base with a few pinholes to fasten it to the pillow. Once, when traveling, I didn't want the weight so had DH cut a sturdy plastic base with many pinholes. The base was screwed into the neck so the bases were easy to switch. The lightweight one took many more pins to support. I don't think the newer ones come apart as easily. At lace conference one year, I saw the newer version and bought one. Then I won another one in a drawing. G Now I can put one with a project and leave it there, instead of switching it from pillow to pillow. One caution.Always cover the mirror when not in use. If sunlight shines through it, it can start a fire. You don't want a burned hole in the middle of your lace. Hi Shirlee, You don't say where you are in your email, but if you are in the US, a lacemaker at our guild meeting last week brought in a smaller magnifier than those mentioned. It was on a flexible arm and there was another arm with a small led light. The base was heavy but could be clipped onto a table or just laid on the pillow. She bought it at Hobby Lobby using one of their 40% coupons. I mean to look for it next time I am in the store. I do have the magnifier that you pin on your pillow and love it but the glass part on mine keeps coming loose and the screw refuses to tighten up enough. This is my second one as I forgot to take mine with me to convention one year and had to buy another from Lacy Susan. I think I sold my first one later. Just want to second this. I learned about the Mageyes from a fellow knitter of miniatures, tried them, and can't say enough good things about them. As Clay says, they're light and unobtrusive and come in different strengths. When I'm embroidering they make it so much easier to thread needles and to lay the stitches evenly on 36-count fabric.
