Re: [lace] Re: What are you doing instead of IOLI Convention
When Agnes says it's a long pricking she means it!! There isn't a pillow long enough (unless David can find one) My tablemate is still in the car. mainly because I have no lace on the pillow at the moment... too busy with other things! Will be starting Louise Colgans humming bird on Thursday evening (so far anyway), and if Agnes comes back from Bruges without chocolate there'll be war!!! I've also got to finish the Wolds newsletter so it can be published at the end of the month but the printer has turned up it's toes and died so Chris has to sort it! Think I'll be pleased tomorrow night when my dotty daughter gets back from Edinburgh, I've been cat sitting or at least, spending most of my time hunting for them! [lace] Instead of IOLI....and Nunsense
I closed out our county fair then relaxed. Actually worked a bit on a lace scarf. After my long trip, and a week of county fair, I'm way behind on all chores and projects at home. I'm alternating the dull boring chores with making lace or reading my new lace books (from OIDFA) or taking naps. Regular PLS meeting is Thursday where I'm to survey, ID, and comment on an estate collection of lace. The daughter saved "boxes of lace" from the relatives who wanted to dump it and I get to see if there's anything really good in it. Since David hasn't replied yet ..Nunsense. Nunsense is a musical theatrical production. A convent had a very bad cook who managed to poison the entire convent...except for seven nuns who were away from the convent that day. They had enough money to bury all but three of the nuns, and those are stored in the freezer until they raise the money. They decide to put on a musical variety show in the local high school gym. In the middle of the rehearsals and production, they find out the food inspector will be visiting. The music is good, the story/situation is presented in a very humerous manner. It's a very fun show to put on, or watch. Our community theater has done it three time in the past 10 years. Alice in Oregon -- in the middle of a heat wave. Re: [lace] What are you doing instead of IOLI Convention
It's sad working. B! I'm not even working on lace. Maybe next year, sigh. I hope to take a couple of days off next week, and be a local tourist - going to even get a hotel room down in the French Quarter Beth McCasland in the sub-urbs of New Orleans. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] Re: What are you doing instead of IOLI Convention
I suppose my everyday life is nunsense I'm still plugging away on my first learning piece in Cantù. Those long cloth stitch bars look easy, but I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to maintain a good, even tension going in to and coming out of the 90 degree corners. (This is a cross design.) I've done the inner cross and the outer frame around the cross. Now I am about to start the wavy "biseta" that runs between the two, attaching on either side in two- or three-way "spranghette". It's challenging, but not so much of a learning curve that I can't relax and enjoy it. Re: [lace] Re: What are you doing instead of IOLI Convention
Hello everyone I'm among those who don't go to many lace conventions - too far or too difficult or too something that I can't go - so can't miss what we don't have ;) What I'm working on is a Flanders piece, taking some letters from Ulrike's ABC in Flanders and turning them upright (so that they read up to down, instead of left to right)- which means free-wheeling without a diagram and now I'm teaching myself how to do such a diagram. When finished - it is a Christmassy item - I can publish the pattern somewhere. (David, that was bad...) Trying to meet the Aug 15 deadline for the IOLI Bulletin. The incoming Editor had been warned (or, so I'm told) that I do deliver if not always in a timely manner but it wouldn't do to start her "tenure" with a headache and, perhaps, scare her off :) Since it's for the October issue -- the last one before winter -- it'll be a (very simple) snowflake. But, since I'm still under the spell of the earliest (plated) laces, it'll use the combinations and tricks I learnt studying those. The silver one is done, as are the diagrams. Now for the linen one (different treatment of winkie pins and, as a result, a different look). And the write up. Sigh... I hate write-ups... But, once that's done, I'll reward myself with working on something easy that someone else had done all the thinking on. Just moving the bobbins mindlessly... [lace] Re: What are you doing instead of IOLI Convention
Carolyn, Nice topic for those that are not at convention. Last Saturday my wife and I took a shift at watching the community building at the county fair. Thanks goodness it is air conditioned!!! This midwest heat and humidity is unbearable. Of course we can't just sit there looking at people and twiddling our thumbs. We always bring projects to work on. And of course it sparks conversation. I brought my roller pillow that had a bit of lace started. It is Doris Southard's Bells edging pattern out of her "Lessons in Bobbin Lacemaking" page 77. I am making a few yards of this to be used as trimming on some period dresses that my wife will be making soon for the staff at the Vandalia State House(1836-39 when Lincoln was a statesman). We demonstrate every year at their Grande LeVee and thought it would be nice to have the staff decked out in handmade lace :) Just last night we took another shift at the comm. Bldg and I didn't have that roller pillow with me. So grabbed another project yet to be finished. It is a Hungarian tape lace doily and I am working it on a bolster pillow. Had to switch gears on handling the bobbins. ;) I had half of it done before we sat and after the long sit in the bldg I have just one corner to do before it is finish! But I must say that I am totally NOT going to IOLI convention. We are meeting a family friend who I just recently taught bobbin lace(my first experience at teaching it as well) and she is coming from the Chicago area. We are meeting halfway(almost) to Rockford, IL and I thought that the convention would be a great opportunity to expose her to what lace and lacemakers have to offer. Plus she can see first hand others working lace and go to the vendor room to get some good supplies. I am excited for her and also for us that we get this opportunity! We don't get to go to conventions hardly ever. So this will be a nice treat. But will only last for that one day. Then I have to be back to work for the rest of the week. :( David, You are in Nunsense? What part you play? I had the opportunity two years ago to make all the habits and work on the set construction. The High School teachers put the play on. It was much fun! Happy Lacing!! Dear Friends, the list sure is quiet. S, I thought I'd ask what you are doing this week lace-wise. Not much actually - lace-wise. I have about 2 months more work to do on this petit point portrait I'm doing in 16 shades of B&W at 50 sts per inch. I'm managing to put in about 3 hours per day. After that I shall get back on to my large piece of Toender and finish the last side. Am also madly rehearsing and MD-ing "Nunsense" 2 or 3 nights a week as well. Can't wait to get into my habit. S, I thought I'd ask what you are doing this week lace-wise. I'm really missing going to Convention. That's the first thing. Today I'm going up to the Ipswich Historical Society Museum, where a few of us work with their lace collections. Sally Barry, Linda Lane and I photograph the lace samples and then eventually wrap the lace around tubes (or whatever is appropriate) for storage. We go every two weeks, and it is our lace "fix". On Friday I'll go up to Plimoth Plantation to work some more on the gold and silver lace that will adorn their recreation of a 1620's woman's embroidered jacket. The long piece of lace that needs to be made (just over three yards) is now almost 40" long. I'll probably finish off one of the short pieces and start a new short piece, and then two of four short pieces (for shoulders and cuffs) will be finished. In between, I'm hoping to get a little piece of Binche started. It's been a while since I waded into the murky waters of Binche, so it will be a challenge. I hate summer, the heat and the sticky weather, but it is good for one thing -- retreating into an air conditioned room and making lace. Now it's your turn, tell us what you are up to. Re: [lace] The Lace Reader and beyond
Hi Vicki! Too bad you couldn't follow that inclination!! At least a *few* people might have been educated while you were there! I've read about 3/4 of the book now... but am in Rockford, where activities are keeping us busy! There is a smaller group this year, but we're all having a grand time. As far as I can tell, the vendors aren't being affected by the slump in the economy. Clay in Rockford, where the temperature is expected to top out at 80 (F) for the rest of the week.
